Sparcs are excellent machines, but finding a good operating system for them is tough. * Solaris is too big, slow, and System V for my tastes. * Net/OpenBSD are nice, but generally unpolished (on any architecture). Sparc support in general is sub-par. * Linux is nice, but a little too sloppy. Not to mention that its stability is questionable on sun4c/sun4m. I can't comment on Ultralinux, though I've heard that it's much better. I think FreeBSD is polished, professional, and stable. While the port to the Ultra is obviously paramount, I'd still like to see FreeBSD on the 4m and 4c, as those machines are aging but still usable. If you can provide some technical documentation here and there (many questions can be answered by looking at *BSD and Linux source ...) I'm willing and able to take on those architectures. Is anybody currently working on that? I don't find this to be the case, but if you are expecting a snazzy install program you will be disappointed, and probably come to the conclusion you state. I find NetBSD's install procedure (or rather the one I use to install NetBSD) works very well for workstations with the ability to netboot. I wouldn't do the same thing on a peecee though. > I think FreeBSD is polished, professional, and stable. NetBSD now has a sparc64 port in their current tree and appears to run on the Ultra1 workstation/server machines (judging from their GENERIC file). I'm inclined to wait until current switches to ELF completly before mucking about with sparc support in FreeBSD. Following the footsteps of the FreeBSD/Alpha people wouldn't be a bad idea as they seem to have broken much of the ground. > If you can provide some technical documentation here and there (many > questions can be answered by looking at *BSD and Linux source ...) Manuals. They document the MMU interface and extended ASIs, traps etc. I am using gcc-2.7.2.1 and binutils-2.8.1 with a bunch of cygnus patches configured as `sparc64-elf' as my toolchain. I just submitted a port for elftoaout (PR# ports/7150) to convert static sparc64-elf images to a.out format which can be netbooted by the Ultra's openboot prom. Right now, I am digging in the OpenBoot client-interface.
