Apart from "patch" complaining for malformed diffs (I have hand-edited them) the only problem you _might_ have is in the ioctl "cmd" argument (acdioctl). Affected files are sys/i386/isa/atapi.c \ sys/i386/isa/wcd.c \ sys/i386/isa/atapi-cd.c \ sys/i386/isa/atapi-cd.h \ sys/sys/cdio.h \ sys/sys/wormio.h \ usr.sbin/wormcontrol/wormcontrol.c \ usr.sbin/wormcontrol/wormcontrol.8 \ To try these you have to add device acd0 in your kernel config. The wormcontrol program will then let you write disks etc. (read the manpage, it has additional, more compact, commands). The above code also includes the hack to mount different data tracks from a CDROM. Remember, if you try these to actually write disks, I suggest to use CD-RW media. I don't take responsibility for the production of frisbees. I have tested this code with an HP7200 internal IDE cd writer, on both a P90/24MB ram and P133/32MB ram, writing at double speed. luigi -----------------------------+-------------------------------------- Luigi Rizzo | Dip. di Ingegneria dell'Informazione email: luigi@iet.unipi.it | Universita' di Pisa tel: +39-50-568533 | via Diotisalvi 2, 56126 PISA (Italy) fax: +39-50-568522 | http://www.iet.unipi.it/~luigi/ _____________________________|______________________________________ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-stable" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-stable Mon Sep 28 11:31:00 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id LAA27696 for freebsd-stable-outgoing; Mon, 28 Sep 1998 11:31:00 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from po1.bbn.com (PO1.BBN.COM [192.1.50.38]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id LAA27691 for ; Mon, 28 Sep 1998 11:30:57 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from dennis@bbn.com) Received: from bbn.com (DROCKWELL.BBN.COM [128.89.31.139]) by po1.bbn.com (8.8.6/8.8.6) with ESMTP id OAA07193 for ; Mon, 28 Sep 1998 14:30:30 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199809281830.OAA07193@po1.bbn.com> To: stable@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: resolving ips? Most stock UNIX clients don't inspect the argument they're given, they blindly call "gethostbyname()" as a first attempt, even with a numeric address. Only after that fails (through rejection or *ugh* timeout) do they attempt to parse it as a number. I generally don't let this stand if I have another reason to modify the client. Missed most of this discussion when catching up, hope this isn't redundant. "quotacheck" can run just fine with quotas on. Turning quotas on and off without rebooting is known to expose some filesystem problems. Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG Hi, I'm currently having some problems with the Union-FS in -stable. I've mounted a CD-ROM (the ports distfiles, to be specific) on /cdrom and the ports-Collection via NFS from my 2nd home box. If I do a mount_union /usr/ports/distfiles /cdrom/distfiles I simply get something along the lines "/usr/ports/distfiles read-only filesystem", although this is definitley _not_ true... The other way round, i.e. mount_union /cdrom/distfiles /usr/ports/distfiles works, but is "sub-optimal" becaus this way I can't augment the distfiles-collection on the CD with the current archives ;( I'm using NetBSD for the rest of my "herd" (mostly pmaxes, a SPARCstation and some more) and there I can mount a local filesystem over a read-only mounted NFS filesystem (i.e. /usr/obj over /usr/src). Both machines are running 2.2.7-stable with a kernel cvsupped last weekend (i.e. 09/25 - 28 timeframe). Do I have to do special "voodoo rituals" when mounting the CD-ROM or is there something broken in the Union-FS ? MTIA, Marc PS: Another thing I noted yesterday was a 'panic' while doing a 'find -name work' over the NFS-mounted /usr/ports... I'll try to reproduce it to see if it was just some 'bogons' or a real bug ;) To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-stable" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-stable Tue Sep 29 00:47:46 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id AAA04355 for freebsd-stable-outgoing; Tue, 29 Sep 1998 00:47:46 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from ns1.schleprock.com (ns1.schleprock.com [209.44.61.2]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id AAA04341 for ; Tue, 29 Sep 1998 00:47:36 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from jeffries@ns1.schleprock.com) Received: from localhost (jeffries@localhost) by ns1.schleprock.com (8.9.1/8.9.1) with SMTP id DAA02158 for ; Tue, 29 Sep 1998 03:14:15 -0500 (CDT) Date: Tue, 29 Sep 1998 03:14:15 -0500 (CDT) From: Jeffrey Lynn Jeffries To: freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: -Stable mailing list Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG Has this list really slowed down to less than 10 messages per day??? ========================================================================== Jeffrey Lynn Jeffries Proud user of FreeBSD: Ask me how to unleash the daemon inside your PC To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-stable" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-stable Tue Sep 29 05:18:08 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id FAA10760 for freebsd-stable-outgoing; Tue, 29 Sep 1998 05:18:08 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from onera.onera.fr (onera.onera.fr [144.204.65.4]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id FAA10680 for ; Tue, 29 Sep 1998 05:17:49 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from perrier@onera.fr) Received: from kernighan.onera (kernighan [125.1.1.124]) by onera.onera.fr (8.9.1a/8.9.1) with ESMTP id OAA26423 for ; Tue, 29 Sep 1998 14:17:14 +0200 (MET DST) Received: (from perrier@localhost) by kernighan.onera (8.9.1a/8.9.1/kernighan-1.0) id OAA26677 for freebsd-stable@freebsd.org; Tue, 29 Sep 1998 14:17:19 +0200 Message-ID: <19980929141718.A26543@kernighan.onera> Date: Tue, 29 Sep 1998 14:17:18 +0200 From: Christian Perrier To: freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: rc5des software crash under 2.2.7-RELEASE Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 0.93.2i Sender: owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG Hello, I have been advised to send this report to this list, so here it is. I'm pretty sure it is a disk with a few bad blocks on it, as I had this problem with it once before. The exact error is: sd1(ahc0:1:0): MEDIUM ERROR info:0x37c2ce asc:11,0 Unrecovered read error When i had this problem before I reformated the disk and it went away. I don't want to do that this time. :-) Back in my DECStation (ultrix) days "rzdisk" could be used to remap a bad block while the system was up and running. I'd like to do this on my FreeBSD-Stable box, but I'm running into a few problems. First, the error doesn't seem to include a block number or something else I could hand to another program to identify the block. Second, I can't find the right program. scsi(8) is the only thing that looks close, but MAKEDEV doesn't seem to know how to make the "super scsi" device it wants. So, oh great SCSI gurus out there. Is what I want possible? Well, again, as I told to all people who mad eme this answer privately, I _really_ run the proper version of rc5des (the one for FreeBSD 2.x, NOT the one for 3.x). I grabbed the software _twice_ from the links at www.distributed.net > And there is absolutely no reason to run it as root, and every reason > not to. Put it in your home directory. Or create a special account for Certainly. This is exactly what I do on the several other machines where I run rc5des (mainly Linux machines). The software runs as nobody with only nobody-owned files. I mentioned in my report that I ran it as root. This is just because I didn't make the needed work for having it ran as another UID. I just wanted to quicly launch the software and see it work...or not. Date: Wed, 30 Sep 1998 13:09:36 -0700 Message-ID: <24550.907186176@time.cdrom.com> From: "Jordan K. Hubbard" Sender: owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG David Horwitt has been kind enough to submit some patches for supporting the Libretto's PCCARD floppy drive which seems to work fairly well for me modulo a bit of kernel message spew (which doesn't appear to effect its function). I figured it's probably a good time to get more feedback on it and see if the last bits of hair can't be shaved off. Libretto owners will want to apply the patches below to /sys/i386/isa and /etc (for the pccard.conf file) and then add: options FDC_YE to their kernel config file to enable this support. Please let me know how it works for you, and anyone wishing to port this forward to -current also won't see a fight from me. :-) Index: fd.c =================================================================== RCS file: /home/ncvs/src/sys/i386/isa/fd.c,v retrieving revision 1.92.2.6 diff -u -u -r1.92.2.6 fd.c --- fd.c 1998/05/06 19:09:05 1.92.2.6 +++ fd.c 1998/09/30 19:59:51 @@ -5,6 +5,10 @@ * This code is derived from software contributed to Berkeley by * Don Ahn. * + * Libretto PCMCIA floppy support by David Horwitt (dhorwitt@ucsd.edu) + * aided by the Linux floppy driver modifications from David Bateman + * (dbateman@eng.uts.edu.au). + * * Copyright (c) 1993, 1994 by * jc@irbs.UUCP (John Capo) * vak@zebub.msk.su (Serge Vakulenko) @@ -92,6 +96,10 @@ /* configuration flags */ #define FDC_PRETEND_D0 (1 << 0) /* pretend drive 0 to be there */ +#ifdef FDC_YE +#define FDC_IS_PCMCIA (1 << 1) /* if successful probe, then it's + a PCMCIA device */ +#endif /* internally used only, not really from CMOS: */ #define RTCFDT_144M_PRETENDED 0x1000 @@ -204,6 +212,11 @@ int ftattach(struct isa_device *, struct isa_device *, int); You could be a little more helpful. There are 5 different netscape versions in /usr/ports/www: % ls -dCF netscape* netscape3/ netscape4-navigator/ netscape4-communicator/ netscape45-communicator/ netscape4-communicator.us/ And one Mozilla: % ls -dCF moz* mozilla/ If for some reason one doesn't want to use the falling-out-of-bed simple ports mechanism (I can't imagine why) then you could either read the Makefile(s) to know where the raw files could be downloaded, else you could do something like: % cd /usr/ports/www/netscape4-communicator % make fetch And let the port fetch it for you. Better yet, "make install" will fetch, patch, compile, and install. When it finishes, "make clean" to clean up the mess made in the port's directory. You can cd to /usr/ports and "make clean" there too, to find all the ports you forgot to clean in the past. Communicator 4.06 can be found at ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/communicator/4.06/development/english/unix/freebsd/professional_edition/communicator-pro-v406-export.x86-unknown-freebsd.tar.gz Reading the makefile further indicates you can % setenv USE_128BIT % setenv USA_RESIDENT NO and "make install" will patch your native FreeBSD Communicator for 128 bits. Otherwise you have to download the Linux version in netscape4-communicator.us manually and make sure you have Linux emulation running. -- David Kelly N4HHE, dkelly@nospam.hiwaay.net ===================================================================== The human mind ordinarily operates at only ten percent of its capacity -- the rest is overhead for the operating system. It made quotas for /var/mail totally useless :( Over the last few months, we've migrated upward to 2.2.6-STABLE and then 2.2.7-STABLE, and I took another look at the code and saw major changes, so I tried re-enabling them, and it worked. The traceback you posted indeed looks familiar :-/ Unfortunately, as we have to do Real Work(tm) with this system I had to convert it back to 2.2.7-RELEASE. The consensus at the time seemed to be that it is not a CAM problem per se but triggered/exacerbated by it. It will be interesting to see if it also happens with -current, as this may very well be a -stable VM issue. I would venture to say that a new install from the most recent beta is the best way to go. Doing a source code upgrade and 'make world' seems like a lot of unnecessary trouble when you have a binary release that will install almost without a hitch. (Speaking from my personal experience with exactly this upgrade about a week ago.) Of course, it goes without saying that a full backup before hand is manditory. Also, the bin distribution in a fair bit larger than the 2.x series (perl5?) so if you set up your system like I do with a /usr just big enough to hold it, you may have to ditch some extras unless your adjust your partitions. I dropped the doc, info, and games distributions and fit into my old 80MB /usr with just about 1MB to spare.[1] Once 3.0-RELEASE rolls around, I'll probably re-partition and re-install. Also be aware that a fair number of ports do not currently build on 3.0. Starting with 2.2.6, the distfiles for the ports were split across two CD's. That led to some minor problems. For example, the main tarball and patchfiles for xv and ghostscript were split across the CD's, making it impossible to compile these ports directly off CD. Also, some ports had prerequisites that were on the other CD. There's probably not much that can be done about the prereqs issue. But surely it's possible to keep all the files for a single port on the same CD. This is a minor problem since I can always copy the disfiles to a common directory on my disk (which I do anyway). And I would much rather have the extra distfiles than a smaller set that fit onto one CD. I haven't seen the 2.2.7 CD's, so my apologies if these problems were solved then. --Mark Krentel krentel@dreamscape.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-stable" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-stable Thu Oct 1 13:24:46 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id NAA26217 for freebsd-stable-outgoing; Thu, 1 Oct 1998 13:24:46 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from time.cdrom.com (time.cdrom.com [204.216.27.226]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id NAA26205 for ; Thu, 1 Oct 1998 13:24:39 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from jkh@time.cdrom.com) Received: from time.cdrom.com (jkh@localhost.cdrom.com [127.0.0.1]) by time.cdrom.com (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id NAA04607; Thu, 1 Oct 1998 13:13:03 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from jkh@time.cdrom.com) To: "Mark W. This server was just upgraded from 2.2.6-RELEASE to 2.2.7-RELEASE (including a newly built kernel based chiefly on GENERIC), and ever since it exhibits these intermittent panics: Fatal trap 12: page fault while in kernel mode fault virtual address = 0x18 fault code = supervisor write, page not present instruction pointer = 0x8:0xf011e3d1 stack pointer = 0x10:0xefbffe9c frame pointer = 0x10:0xefbffec0 code segment = base 0x0, limit 0xfffff, type 0x1b = DPL 0, pres 1, def32 1, gran 1 processor eflags = interrupt enabled, resume , IOPL = 0 current process = 501 (pnserver) interrupt mask = panic: page fault The panics seem to occur during periods of high activity after running for a couple of hours. Otherwise, it appears to operate fine. Prior to the Intel card, it was running an SMC Rev C (de driver) card that was even more sensitive and paniced frequently. I'm considering reverting back to 2.2.6 unless there is a known issue with 2.2.7-RELEASE that has been resolved in -stable. Or maybe there is no some new kernel tweaks required in 2.2.7 to avoid this? Any assistance is much appreciated. Thanks. This As someone who has been playing with PIIs and fxp nics over the last couple of days, I have found a few things that *might* help. On the ASUS MBs (both LX and BX) that I was setting up I found that the Intel card on both NT and FreeBSD would work very poorly depending on which PCI slot it was in. If the card was in the first slot (the one next to the AGP), on NT I would see all sorts of dropped packets and ethernet errors. It really manifested itself on NT with PCAnywhere losing its connection every 2 min... On FreeBSD, very poor network performance even when on a straight cross over cable to another box. I think it has something to do with lack of busmastering on all PCI slots. It might be a long shot for you, but try putting the card in the middle of the BUS, and give it a decent IRQ (e.g. 5 or 10) thats not shared with other devices. On the LX chipset, the last 2 PCI slots share IRQs which I imagine would hinder performance. Also, with 256MB of RAM, make sure you disable the speculative reads in the BIOS.... As for kernel configs, build a customer kernel at least... Get rid of what you dont need and yes, upgrade to stable. I have a few boxes that regularly push > 5Mb on a 5min average (yes, just bits), but they perform quite well... ---Mike ********************************************************************** Mike Tancsa, Network Admin * mike@sentex.net Sentex Communications Corp, * http://www.sentex.net/mike Cambridge, Ontario * 01.519.651.3400 Canada * To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-stable" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-stable Thu Oct 1 17:37:17 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id RAA02841 for freebsd-stable-outgoing; Thu, 1 Oct 1998 17:37:17 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from axl.training.iafrica.com (axl.training.iafrica.com [196.31.1.175]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id RAA02834 for ; Thu, 1 Oct 1998 17:37:14 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from sheldonh@axl.training.iafrica.com) Received: from sheldonh (helo=axl.training.iafrica.com) by axl.training.iafrica.com with local-esmtp (Exim 2.02 #1) id 0zOtDK-0002cZ-00 for stable@freebsd.org; Fri, 2 Oct 1998 02:36:54 +0200 From: Sheldon Hearn To: stable@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Warning: apache13 upgrade requires pkg_delete Date: Fri, 02 Oct 1998 02:36:53 +0200 Message-ID: <10076.907288613@axl.training.iafrica.com> Sender: owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG Hi folks, I haven't looked into this one very closely, so I'll just tell you my conclusion, followed by a bit of supporting evidence. If you plan to upgrade ports/www/apache13 from anything pre- 28 Sept, be sure to kill httpd and pkg_delete the existing apache13 package first. I didn't and here's what happened: Everything continued as normal UNTIL... At 02:00, syslogd tried to rotate my apache logs. This includes sending a SIGHUP to the controlling httpd. Apache died and left the following turd in /var/log/httpd-error.log: [Fri Oct 2 02:00:01 1998] [notice] SIGHUP received. Attempting to restart Syntax error on line 26 of /usr/local/etc/apache/httpd.conf: Cannot load /usr/local/libexec/apache/mod_mime_magic.so into server: Undefined symbol "_ap_log_rerror" in httpd:/usr/local/libexec/apache/mod_mime_magic.so Trying to start apache on the command-line produced less helpful output about being unable to load a module called ``(null)''. :-) After a pkg_delete, build and install from ports, apache started up and carried on working as before. I hope this saves someone some blood / sweat / window panes. Cioa, Sheldon. To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-stable" in the body of the message
