Exactly. Back in the early days, the site used server-side includes in a lot of the pages. When people started mirroring, I gave up using SSI because mirrors could not, or would not enable the facility. It is the same situation with cgi scripts. > > for example, i'm on www2.freebsd.org and do a search of the mailing lists, > > or ports or whatever and all the results point to www.freebsd.org, is this > > on purpose, do the mirrors not mirror the handbook/FAQ? > > Maybe... :) A prototype replacement for the current search engine keeps track of the original mirror the request comes from and then generates URLs pointing back at the mirror. This could potentially fail if the mirror is out of date; the search engine could return a URL for a page that doesn't exist on the mirror, or exists but does not contain the information that the user was searching for. I doubt this would be a big problem though. Oh, and this is only relevant for the web page searches. Mirroring the mailing lists would take around 800 megabytes so I don't think too many mirrors would be jumping to do that! It might be nice to get one or two strategically placed mirrors though. -john
