It's now available online. Quality Unix for FREE By Brett Glass, Sm@rt Reseller Linux is certainly hot, but another offering--FreeBSD--could be the perfect fit for your customers. We first found FreeBSD in 1995, when we were assigned the task of turning an Intel 80486 DX4/100 machine into a dial-in and Web server for a users group. At that time, IBM's OS/2 support was flagging, Windows NT was far too unstable and the then-current Linux implementations refused to agree with their hardware. FreeBSD--the "other" free Unix--installed on our first try. A configuration program allowed us to specify exactly what hardware the system contained. We followed the online instructions, and within 10 minutes, the rest of the OS started to install itself from the Internet--complete with a Web server, Web browser, e-mail server and dial-in server. FreeBSD was derived from the Unix operating system developed at the University of California at Berkeley--hence, "Berkeley Software Distribution," or BSD. Unix devotees used this code to make a completely free Unix. The biggest hurdle to successfully installing FreeBSD is making sure that your computers don't contain Windows-specific hardware, such as Winmodems, which cannot be recognized. Nonetheless, the majority of hardware products have FreeBSD drivers, and if you're a reseller configuring a system, it's a simple matter to build a system with supported components. Sound a lot like Linux? You're right. Linux and FreeBSD are similar. Both are available as a free download or inexpensive commercial versions. Both come with source code. And FreeBSD can emulate Linux, so you can run Linux software, such as the Corel WordPerfect suite. However, there are important differences. Because FreeBSD is based on BSD, its commands, command options and architecture are identical to those of this well-known Unix flavor. Linux, by contrast, is closer to AT&T's System V, with some unique features. If your developers come from a college environment, BSD is the system they'll most likely know. Also, FreeBSD's development has been less chaotic than that of Linux. The software is updated and improved by a group of core developers. That makes for slower development than the widely modified Linux, but higher stability. That's why many major Internet sites such as Yahoo--which require the utmost stability and good network performance--opt for FreeBSD. For resellers, an important difference involves the licensing terms under which each OS is published. FreeBSD is offered under the so-called "Berkeley," or BSD, license, which allows a reseller to use the OS and its source code for any purpose so long as credit is given to the original authors. By contrast, Linux is published under the GNU Public License, which requires resellers that market an improved version of Linux--or a hardware product that contains it--to make the source code of their software available to the public. So much for adding unique value that competitors can't match. If you create customized turnkey products with "Unix inside," then Free-BSD is for you.
