Hmm, no offense, but you said the same about the kernel config ;-))))) At some point in time the routing code in FreeBSD seemd to change, and i had similar problems with a configuration which worked a long time but then stopped to work. If i remember correctly, a packet is only routed to a destination in case the destination is in a different network. Ignoring the "netmask 0xffffffff" in the ipr0 configuration, nothing will be routed from 132.222.123.x to 132.222.123.1 because they are in the same network. Which would be an explanation why an ISDN connection is made in your setup but no data flows. hellmuth -- Hellmuth Michaelis Tel +49 40 559747-70 HCS Hanseatischer Computerservice GmbH Fax +49 40 559747-77 Oldesloer Strasse 97-99 Mail hm [at] hcs.de 22457 Hamburg WWW http://www.hcs.de To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isdn" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isdn Tue Aug 24 5:52:15 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-isdn@freebsd.org Received: from iaehv.iae.nl (iaehv.IAE.nl [194.151.64.2]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 83B0115118 for ; Tue, 24 Aug 1999 05:52:08 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from graaf@iae.nl) Received: from iae.nl (cirdan.iae.nl [212.61.28.35]) by iaehv.iae.nl (Postfix) with ESMTP id D877220F5F for ; Tue, 24 Aug 1999 14:51:59 +0200 (CEST) Date: Tue, 24 Aug 1999 14:53:04 +0200 (CEST) From: graaf@iae.nl Subject: Re: Upgrade FreeBSD 3.1 to i4b 0.83: spppcontrol Invalid argument To: freebsd-isdn@freebsd.org In-Reply-To: <199908042111.XAA94829@peedub.muc.de> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/plain; CHARSET=US-ASCII Message-Id: <19990824125159.D877220F5F@iaehv.iae.nl> Sender: owner-freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On 4 Aug, Gary Jennejohn wrote: > "Ben Bucksch" writes: >>after running FreeBSD/overinstall.sh, recompiling the kernel and compiling >>the userspace programs, I got the error: >> >>spppcontrol: SIOCGIFGENERIC(SPPPIOGDEFS): Invalid argument >> > > It should be defined in /sys/net/if_sppp.h. Try copying that file > from the sppp directory to /sys/net. I had this problem with spppcontrol as wel when I upgraded from 0.70 to 0.83 on FreeBSD 3-STABLE. I have solved the problem by changing the following piece of code in src/sys/net/if_sppp.h: #if (defined(__FreeBSD_version) && __FreeBSD_version < 300000) || \ (defined(__FreeBSD__) && __FreeBSD__ < 3) || \ defined(__NetBSD__) || defined (__OpenBSD__) #define SIOCSIFGENERIC _IOW('i', 57, struct ifreq) /* generic IF set op */ #define SIOCGIFGENERIC _IOWR('i', 58, struct ifreq) /* generic IF get op */ #endif I have taken the two defines out of the #if statement, and now spppcontrol does not give the error anymore. I do not know if this is a correct solution, but maybe someone who understands the code can use this information. I have noticed another problem that is probably unrelated to this, when I have a connection to my ISP on isp0 I did ifconfig isp0 down and that caused FreeBSD to reboot. I am using a Teles S0/8 which I got from Hellmuth (many thanks for this, and also for writing ISDN4BSD!) I assume this is, what Helle wanted to say ;-). On a point-to-point interface the netmask should not matter, because ifconfig adds only a host-route. It seems, that your problem is somewhere else. What does ``short'' mean? About 60 Seconds? Do you have a routing daemon running? What does your /etc/gateways look like? Try something like ---------- snip ---------- if=ipr0 passive if=ipr1 passive if=ipr2 passive if=ipr3 passive if=isppp0 passive if=isppp1 passive if=isppp2 passive if=isppp3 passive ---------- snap ---------- Your /etc/rc.conf and the output of `ifconfig -a` and `netstat -rn` might help to solve your problem. When I want to connect to a host that is reachable through the default route (ipr0) isdnd dials out but watching tcpdump -i ipr0 I see no packets going through the interface. I've disabled IPDIVERT and IPFIREWALL also. (It may be though that my tcpdump doesn't match 3.2 - difficult to upgrade at the moment, but maybe I'll make sure that I have a matching tcpdump) What else could I do (debugging, tracing or whatever)? -- Chris Christoph P. You have two problems. The first is an easy and obvious one, you get protocol errors to "kuku-home", either i4b has a bug (which i doubt for this case) or your exchange (to verify this i need isdntrace data, but i dont have time to debug this currently ..). Sometimes a call succeeds, so the ISDN problems don't seem to be related to your main problem. The other problem is, that no data flows on the B channel once a connection is made to either "kuku-home" or the other destination. This is not exactly true, as at least nearly always some bytes flow in the "in" direction, but not in the "out" direction and at least one time there is data flowing in both directions for "kuku-home" (So the whole i4b/ISDN setup is OK and working). Have you configured VJ-Header compression for the ipr interfaces the same on all machines ? That might be the cause. If its not the cause, i think the only thing left is that you have some kind of ip routing problem. tcpdump is your friend ... ;-) hellmuth -- Hellmuth Michaelis Tel +49 40 559747-70 HCS Hanseatischer Computerservice GmbH Fax +49 40 559747-77 Oldesloer Strasse 97-99 Mail hm [at] hcs.de 22457 Hamburg WWW http://www.hcs.de To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isdn" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isdn Wed Aug 25 2:39:26 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-isdn@freebsd.org Received: from nets5.rz.rwth-aachen.de (nets5.rz.RWTH-Aachen.DE [137.226.144.13]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E0762152AA for ; Wed, 25 Aug 1999 02:39:18 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from kuku@gilberto.physik.RWTH-Aachen.DE) Received: from campino.informatik.rwth-aachen.de (campino.Informatik.RWTH-Aachen.DE [137.226.116.240]) by nets5.rz.rwth-aachen.de (8.9.1a/8.9.1/6) with ESMTP id LAA06841; Wed, 25 Aug 1999 11:37:12 +0200 (MET DST) Received: from gil.physik.rwth-aachen.de (gilberto.physik.rwth-aachen.de [137.226.30.2]) by campino.informatik.rwth-aachen.de (8.9.1a/8.9.1/3) with ESMTP id LAA07515; Wed, 25 Aug 1999 11:37:21 +0200 (MET DST) Received: (from kuku@localhost) by gil.physik.rwth-aachen.de (8.9.2/8.6.9) id LAA57485; Wed, 25 Aug 1999 11:37:25 +0200 (CEST) Date: Wed, 25 Aug 1999 11:37:25 +0200 From: Christoph Kukulies To: Hellmuth Michaelis Cc: Christoph Kukulies , ISDN Mailinglist Subject: Re: Routing (was: isic0 not found at 0x340) Message-ID: <19990825113725.A57437@gil.physik.rwth-aachen.de> References: <19990825100744.A56980@gil.physik.rwth-aachen.de> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 0.95.4us In-Reply-To: ; from Hellmuth Michaelis on Wed, Aug 25, 1999 at 10:59:10AM +0200 Sender: owner-freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Wed, Aug 25, 1999 at 10:59:10AM +0200, Hellmuth Michaelis wrote: > >From the keyboard of Christoph Kukulies: > > > I still have it not running. > > You have two problems. no longer :-) It works! Somehow I must have messed several things. 1. I removed everything from my old kernel config file regarding i4b and inserted the portion from the LINT config file, enabled the AVM_A! line/driver. 2. I removed /sys/compile/MONKAVMIFB totally. Maybe there were some i4b .o files from 3.2 release kernel compilation and make didn't notice when I overinstalled i4b-0.83 (the config mimicry is magic to me anyway - since -n has been gone) 3. I had an isdnd in /usr/local/bin which is now in /usr/sbin (better/correct place anyway) This came suddenly after I had cleaned /sys/compile/* and I wanted to start isdnd. It said kernel 83 ! = 70 (isdnd) (and usrdevicename isppp which is isp now I've learnt). So the conclusion is: I had a mix of i4b 0.70 and 0.83 on my machine. Very odd, my fault of course, so I apologize for having wasted your time, but I've learnt some things: netmask isn't important on the POINT to POINT link /etc/gateways isn't necessary. Sometimes one can rely on the rule 'it has always worked that way' ;-) (you only don't know, when) > > The first is an easy and obvious one, you get protocol errors to "kuku-home", > either i4b has a bug (which i doubt for this case) or your exchange (to verify > this i need isdntrace data, but i dont have time to debug this currently ..). > Sometimes a call succeeds, so the ISDN problems don't seem to be related to > your main problem. > > The other problem is, that no data flows on the B channel once a connection > is made to either "kuku-home" or the other destination. > > This is not exactly true, as at least nearly always some bytes flow in the > "in" direction, but not in the "out" direction and at least one time there > is data flowing in both directions for "kuku-home" (So the whole i4b/ISDN > setup is OK and working). > > Have you configured VJ-Header compression for the ipr interfaces the same > on all machines ? However, I'm not confident a user can configure, say, both a Teles S0/8 and a Teles S0/16.3 and expect autoconfiguration to work it out. Has this issue been resolved on NetBSD? Or should users not configure two potentially conflicting cards into their kernel? The case I mentioned is very real for me, I'm about to set up a test machine that will end up with both in them at times (and beside, I like to have one kernel around for all the boards I have access to). For devices that can be reliably autodetected (ISA PNP, PCI) the current BSD/OS code will just set the flag based on the bus probe result. This should probably be documented explicitly in the BSD/OS i4b README :-) Cheers, -- Bert -- Bert Driehuis, MIS -- bert_driehuis@nl.compuware.com -- +31-20-3116119 The grand leap of the whale up the Fall of Niagara is esteemed, by all who have seen it, as one of the finest spectacles in nature. -- Benjamin Franklin.
