It works pretty well, on my machine at least, given the sketchy information that Werner Koch was able to get out of Xircom. I was most surprised to see the BSD licensing terms show up on Werner's driver, somewhere between v1.28 and 1.30. Makes me feel a lot happier about 'adapting' his work and not having to worry so much about not actually copying any code. I wouldn't go out and buy a Xircom card on the strength of this, however. For one thing, their attitude to supporting open-source driver development annoys me, plus there are other cards (including some 10/100 ones, I believe) that are far better supported. Get one of those instead. Of course, if you have one already I'll add you to my list of testers. Those of you receiving this mail directly rather than through -mobile have already expressed interest in testing and debugging the driver -- many thanks in advance! Please let me know if you want to be added/removed to/from the mailing list. The driver can be obtained from the URL: http://www.dcs.qmw.ac.uk/~scott/xe-drv/xe-drv.tar.gz This archive contains the two source files (if_xe.c and if_xereg.h) and a very brief set of installation instructions. I'm assuming that people are familiar with the mechanics of building new kernels and configuring PCMCIA cards under FreeBSD. Let me know if you need any help. The driver is only known to run under 3.0-RELEASE, but may well compile on other versions -- I don't know. It aims to support the following cards: CE2, CEM28, CEM33, CE3 and CEM56, and certain Intel and Compaq cards using the Xircom hardware. All the usual disclaimers apply: this code may cause your machine to sprout wings and fly out of your office window; you use it at your own risk. It (more or less) works for me on my particular setup, but YMMV. I won't have time to do much work on the code before Wednesday (thesis writing takes priority :), so that should give you all time to try it out and let me know what does (or more likely doesn't) work. We don't try to detect when floppies are stupidly removed, perhaps we shouldn't try to do it with pccard/cardbus cards either? Commentary? I recently pulled a MS-DOS floppy while copying a file to it. The net result of doing so was that the cp command hung and the console got spewed with error messages like fd0c: hard error writing fsbn 897 (No status) fd0c: hard error writing fsbn 1 of 1-3 (No status) I would expect the pccard stuff to behave similarly when its cards get pulled (remember, PCMCIA was originally just a replacement for floppies (-: ). The process accessing a removed card can reasonably be expected to hang, but there's no reason the whole machine should turn into a brick just because a card was popped -- at least in the case of network and serial cards. SCSI cards should probably behave that way, too, but I realize that is an awful lot to ask. Incidentally, is there any reason why "gone" is not checked in the inner loop of the sio interrupt routine? My guess is that the driver would be less apt to hang if this check were moved. Then again, I don't even know where "gone" gets set, so maybe this is moot. I am trying to get my lucent wavelan cards working with kame. I test it between a PC (ISA wavelan card, wl if) and a laptop (PCMCIA card, PAO wlp if). The PC should forward the packets to an internal ipv6 network. I have now a problem that the packets from the laptop has hop limit set to 0 so that they cannot be forwarded. What can be the problem? Otherwise ping6 is working. And if I specify number of hops to 2 or more (e.g. ping6 -h 2 ) it will work. I tried to make the wlp interface supporting multicast with defining MULTICAST, but maybe something more is needed. Maybe it is something that should still be configured for the wlp interface. I have to configure it after booting the laptop, so maybe I should do something more than ifconfig wlp0? ifmcstat produces this (maybe it is some multicast group missing, and if so how could they be added?): lp0: tun0: lo0: inet6 fe80:3::1 inet6 ::1 group ff01::1 group ff02:3::1 wlp0: inet6 fe80:4::a00:6aff:fe2a:17fa inet6 4000:0:2:0:a00:6aff:fe2a:17fa group ff02:4::1:ff2a:17fa And I use Freebsd 2.2.8 Release, PAO 981225 for 228R and kame snap 990111. Unfortunately, the 'hardware' still exists when you pull a floppy, and it doesn't exist when you pull a PCCARD. Who handles the fact that you've got a interrupt and a driver, but no hardware to run on? (And no, it is *very* hard to write an IRQ that can deal with this reliably). When a floppy is pulled, it's easy for the 'hardware' to determine that something bad happened, since the hardware still exists. > Incidentally, is there any reason why "gone" is not checked in the inner > loop of the sio interrupt routine? Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hello, I will get a new laptop soon. It will be a HP Omnibook 4150 (it uses a TI1220 PCIC-Controller). Now I am looking for a PC-Card Fast- Ethernet-Card. I will use FreeBSD 4.0-current. I was looking at a D-Link DFE650 (PC-Card) or DFE660 (PC-Cardbus). The docu for the 660-Card mentions that it will work together with the TI1220-Chip. Will one of these Cards work with 4.0-current? What about PAO? I would prefer the 660-Card, because my understanding is that PC-Card is to slow to feed a full Fast-Ethernet-Channel. Can we do Cardbus these days? I understand to little of these things to see if there would/is special support for that needed. Are there any other hints of what for a Fast-Ethernet (100MB) Cards for a Laptop could be used together with 4.0-current?
