They do it of their own free will. You can influence this free will positively by submitting a well-formulated question supplying as much relevant information as possible. You can influence this free will negatively by submitting an incomplete, illegible, or rude question. It's perfectly possible to send a message to FreeBSD-questions and not get an answer even if you follow these rules. ... 7. If you do all this, and you still don't get an answer, there could be other reasons. For example, the problem is so complicated that nobody knows the answer, or the person who does know the answer was offline. If you don't get an answer after, say, a week, it might help to re-send the message. If you don't get an answer to your second message, though, you're probably not going to get one from this forum. Resending the same message again and again will only make you unpopular." I myself have often been frustrated by people not answering questions, but that's life. FreeBSD still has the best tech support I've seen, commercial product or no. You can grab the source/docs from: http://www.dcs.qmw.ac.uk/~scott/xe_drv/ The big changes in this release are that I've got the media selection code mostly working, and sorted out some of the problems with the probe routine. The media selection code now uses the 'media' option to ifconfig and will successfully autonegotiate on all the hubs I have access to. CEM56 support is still notable by its absence. However, I know what the problem is, and someone is working on it. The code should compile on 3.0, 3.1 and maybe 4.0. I doubt it will work unchanged on 2.2.x -- a backport will happen at a later date. Patches would be appreciated if you need to do anything weird to get it to compile. Please let me know about any and all problems/successes with the driver. A couple more updates and I'll be nagging the powers-that-be to get it committed :) Cheers, Scott PS. If you received this directly and *don't* want any further mail about the driver, let me know and I'll take you off my list. -- =========================================================================== Scott Mitchell | PGP Key ID |"If I can't have my coffee, I'm just | 0x54B171B9 | like a dried up piece of roast goat" QMW College, London, UK | 0xAA775B8B | -- J. I don't see the Motorola Montana on the list of PCCard devices, but was hoping that since it's a serial card it should work with the standard sio driver. Could someone confirm this and/or let me know if it is possible to get this card working with FreeBSD. I also have a 3Com 3c574-TX 10/100 Ethernet card, but I've not seen any support for this on Solaris x86 or FreeBSD (not sure about Linux as I've not used the Penguin for quite some time). Thanks! I thought I could just add an entry in there and have it work, but wasn't sure and didn't have the exact info. Since I don't have support for my NIC, I need to set the laptop up to access the net from the modem. My internal MWave on the ThinkPad is surely not supported. I also have an Adaptec 1460a which I saw was on the hardware list for FreeBSD. I have to tell you, I am pleasently suprised that I got a wild hair up my @$$ to look at FreeBSD, it's better on my laptop (although I have NT also, and Linux and Solaris x86 do run on it). When I moved from 2.2-PAO to 3.1, my pccard support stopped working entirely. After much debugging, I found out it was due in part to how the irq's are being allocated. In order to get an IRQ allocated, there has to be a match between the device IRQ mask and the PCCARD irq mask pool (which is only an approximation of the actual irq slots available). Furthermore, there is no way to control which IRQ the pcic driver grabs for itself, and, since it gets first dibs, if it grabs an IRQ that you need for a card, you're screwed. I added the following to /sys/pccard/pccard.c: +#ifdef PCIC_DEBUG + printf("Locating IRQ...\n(slt->ctrl->irqs=%x, desc->irqmask=%x)\n", slt->ctrl->irqs, desc->irqmask); +#endif if ((slt->ctrl->irqs & desc->irqmask) == 0) return(EINVAL); When I insert my PortableDock harddrive, I get the following kernel message: Locating IRQ... (slt->ctrl->irqs=e00, desc->irqmask=200) As you can see, the PCCARD pool only consists of IRQ 10, 11, and 12 (which is much less than what is actually available). The card requires IRQ 10, and gets it (before I hacked pcic.c, the controller would grab IRQ 10 for itself). I would suggest you check to make sure the PCCARD IRQ pool actually has IRQ 10 available at the time of card insertion (using my method, or something similar). -Michael Robinson To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Thu Feb 25 22:15:29 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from dingo.cdrom.com (castles134.castles.com [208.214.165.134]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C96FB14EC0; Thu, 25 Feb 1999 22:15:26 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from mike@dingo.cdrom.com) Received: from dingo.cdrom.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by dingo.cdrom.com (8.9.1/8.8.8) with ESMTP id WAA04827; Thu, 25 Feb 1999 22:07:28 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from mike@dingo.cdrom.com) Message-Id: <199902260607.WAA04827@dingo.cdrom.com> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.0.2 2/24/98 To: Patrick Seal Cc: Mike Smith , mobile@freebsd.org, freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Subject: Re: PCCARD modem trouble (fwd) In-reply-to: Your message of "Thu, 25 Feb 1999 23:25:24 EST." OK I have an Edimax EP4000 working (under 3.1 stable). The ze driver might be able to drive it but I don't think so I use the pccard stuff. Step 1: Enable pccard in kernel (you'll need to change the config and compile a new kernel make sure you include ed0 as well). Step 2: Enable pccard support in rc.conf Step 3: Add the following to /etc/pccard.conf #EDIMAX NE2000 clone card "PCMCIA" "Ethernet" config 0x21 "ed0" 10 insert echo EDIMAX PCMCIA Ethernet card inserted insert /etc/pccard_ether ed0 remove echo EDIMAX PCMCIA Ethernet card removed remove /sbin/ifconfig ed0 delete Step 4: Try it and let us know what happened. ---------------------------------- E-Mail: Steve O'Hara-Smith Date: 26-Feb-99 Time: 10:25:53 This message was sent by XFMail ---------------------------------- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Fri Feb 26 3:50:30 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from hyperhost.net (ether.lightrealm.com [207.159.132.5]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0165414F53; Fri, 26 Feb 1999 03:50:27 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from patseal@hyperhost.net) Received: from port3.annex8.radix.net (port3.annex8.radix.net [205.252.108.3]) by hyperhost.net (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id GAA07303; Fri, 26 Feb 1999 06:50:03 -0500 (EST) Date: Fri, 26 Feb 1999 06:49:53 -0500 (EST) From: Patrick Seal To: Mike Smith Cc: mobile@freebsd.org, freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Subject: Re: PCCARD modem trouble (fwd) In-Reply-To: <199902260607.WAA04827@dingo.cdrom.com> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Thu, 25 Feb 1999, Mike Smith wrote: > > Thanks, I changed it to 13 (the only other availible irq that the card > > seems to support according to dumpcis info) and it still gives me the same > > error.
