According to their web pages at they are looking for a US mirror of their CVS repository, and more contributors. Is this something either of the FreeBSD Mozilla/Java groups think would be a good thing for FreeBSD to provide? According to their that would be an interesting thing. given that mozilla is a memory pig and some JVM's are reported to be very memory hungry, it will be interesting to see if a merge of the two things will generate the biggest application ever seen or there are beneficial effects. luigi To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mozilla" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mozilla Wed Jan 6 03:55:32 1999 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id DAA03690 for freebsd-mozilla-outgoing; Wed, 6 Jan 1999 03:55:32 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-mozilla@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from shale.csir.co.za (shale.csir.co.za [146.64.46.5]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id DAA03683; Wed, 6 Jan 1999 03:55:25 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from reg@shale.csir.co.za) Received: (from reg@localhost) by shale.csir.co.za (8.9.1/8.9.1) id NAA37163; Wed, 6 Jan 1999 13:51:09 +0200 (SAT) (envelope-from reg) Date: Wed, 6 Jan 1999 13:51:09 +0200 From: Jeremy Lea To: Luigi Rizzo Cc: nclayton@lehman.com, freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG, freebsd-mozilla@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Jazilla project looking for CVS mirror Message-ID: <19990106135108.D16622@shale.csir.co.za> References: <19990106102526.P2865@lehman.com> <199901060859.JAA05319@labinfo.iet.unipi.it> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 0.95.1i In-Reply-To: <199901060859.JAA05319@labinfo.iet.unipi.it>; from Luigi Rizzo on Wed, Jan 06, 1999 at 09:59:45AM +0100 Sender: owner-freebsd-mozilla@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG Hi, On Wed, Jan 06, 1999 at 09:59:45AM +0100, Luigi Rizzo wrote: > that would be an interesting thing. given that mozilla is a memory pig and > some JVM's are reported to be very memory hungry, it will be > interesting to see if a merge of the two things will generate the > biggest application ever seen or there are beneficial effects. Mozilla 5.0 is likely to be much better than the old Netscape when it comes to memory. For one thing the binary is now about 20% of the size of 4.x and also it uses a more modular design (eg it will use the system java as a pug in rather than having it's own JVM). Jazilla is a bit of a waste, since Mozilla 5.0 is only about 10% platform dependant code, and things like the layout engine really need the extra speed from C/C++. It will also be ported to a fairly big number of platforms, and those where it is not are likely to be ones where Java is not available or memory restrictions would mean that a native binary would do a better job. At the moment I'm waiting for a workable tarball to do an update of the mozilla port.
