Both PIM daemons are in the KAME's standard kit; kit/src/pim6dd and kit/src/pim6sd, respectively. So please get them from ftp://ftp.kame.net/pub/kame/{snap, stable, release}/ Please note that pim6sd is only in the snap releases. Although there are stable or release versions of pim6dd, the latest snap version would be more *stable*. We've been heavily using pim6dd after the RELEASE version is released. Also note that pim6sd is working but is still on the way to stabilization. Please be careful to use it. I have to note one more thing. Since there is no standard API for IPv6 multicast routing, the KAME's PIM daemons would not be portable on other IPv6 kits for FreeBSD(e.g. NRL or INRIA). I also had this problem in 3.1-RELEASE. In fact, the problem is one of the reasons I upgraded this evening to 3.2. I am connected to my ISP (pacifier.com) via a dialup connection with a dynamically allocated IP address. Well, I've just been through the same problem (and spent around a day figuring out the answer...). Making your box a NIS server is easy. Just do grep -i nis /etc/defaults/rc.conf and plug the results into your /etc/rc.conf. You probably want to enable nis_server and yppasswdd. You probably also want to look at ypinit(8). The hard bit is making the other Unix hosts understand our password file. Beacuse we use MD5 encrypted passwords, instead of DES encrypted ones, they won't understand them by default. There's a couple of stages to this: 1) Install the DES routines. (easy) If you're still running -RELEASE, then try looking on your CD for the des packages. (harder) If you've moved up to -STABLE, then you'll need to cvsup the secure-all stuff and rebuild the world. When you've done that, you need to repoint the /usr/lib/libcrypt* symlinks to point at libdescrypt* instead of libscrypt*. That last step took a while to figure out. :-) 2) You need to set the UNSECURE variable in /var/yp/Makefile. Most of this stuff is documented in the various manpages for yp... One final word of warning. You'd be best off not distributing your root password over nis. In fact, Sun reccomends that when setting up a nis server, you keep a separate copy of the passwd file, without "system" users in it. This will make sharing the pasword file easier across multiple vendors. You may want to look at the Sun Answerbooks for some more tips and ideas: http://docs.sun.com/ -- Dom Mitchell -- Palmer & Harvey McLane -- Unix Systems Administrator "Always think very hard before messing with TCP. And then don't." -- MC -- ********************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. My query is - how do I force the interface to receive the packets that I want it to. I have set the interface to promiscus mode. What I also can't figure out is where will the data be received? There doesn't seem to be enough documentation around.. Help... FreeBSD doesn't know about the ADSL, it just sees a router. Your "ADSL modem" is really an ethernet to ATM router, and should answer the DHCP request for you. Doesn't it? > 2) Is there any restriction when I want to add a LAN and make the adsl > client as gw? Only if your telco has limited the number of DHCP client addresses you are allowed. If that is true, you'll need to configured NAT on a machine with two network cards, one connected to the LAN and one to the DSL router. The line to the DSL router will be the "public" interface and the LAN connection the "private" interface. -- "Where am I, and what am I doing in this handbasket?" The server will accept about 20K or so, an then will stall out. This seems to be a problem with Windows clients, which leads me to think that its a problem in the windows tcp stack, but im not sure. I've tried two different ftp daemons and still no difference. Anyone know anything about this? Also, some good examples are provided in /etc/rc.firewall and in the handbook: http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/firewalls.html > doing this in the rc.conf file in 3.0.. If anyone could point me in the > direction of some "basic steps" for setting either of these up would be > a big time saver... thanks! Changes to rc.conf will be a bit different than you are used to since it only contains deltas from /etc/defalts/rc.conf (as of FreeBSD 3.1-R, IIRC). This is where default configuration settings are kept. Add the lines that need to be changed to /etc/rc.conf, don't modify /etc/defaults/rc.conf directly. Good luck, and don't be afraid to RTFM a little before asking! ;) It can actually save you more time than waiting for an e-mail response. The man pages and handbook are invaluable resources and are usually the best place to start looking (apologies if you have already tried this, but I couldn't tell from your posting). -brian -- Brian O'Shea boshea@ricochet.net To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-net" in the body of the message
