For those of us with * slow network links, the extra ~30% compression is extremely handy (not to * mention better for conserving bandwidth on the net generally). Lots of folks * are jumping on the bandwagon and providing their tars in bzipped form (as well * as gzipped), so this seems likely to only increase in the future. * * Are there any reasons NOT to use bzippped distfiles where they're available? Unless it is much slower for decompression (I believe it's only slower for compression), I don't see any. Having smaller distfiles will help us (ftp, CDROM) too. I recommend the change of "www/squid11" port. 1) All users have to build the cache directory before using squid, so, do it automatically by the port. And how about the cache and log directory to be moved to /var/squid ? 2) And We all have to set `cache_effective_user nobody nogroup' everytime we use the port. Set this automatically, also. 3) It would be convinient by Dial-up users that skip startup-time's DNS test. Prepare $PREFIX/local/etc/squid/squid.option and RunCache would influence the file's contents. 4) Stop opning `squid.conf' by editor at install time. Users could do it after the installation only when they need. The patch is placed at `http://WWW.jp.FreeBSD.ORG/~sada/squid11.diff.gz'. I'd like to be waiting for your idea about them. If you are too busy to respond, I'll commit the changes at 5 days later. Thanks. It really should be running as a unique uid so that it doesn't have to share resource limits with things like fingerd, apache etc. You can cause a fair amount of chaos by finger bombing a site that is sharing the nobody uid with other things that then suffer because they can't create processes when they need to. The other thing is that uid "nobody" isn't really supposed to own any files at all.. However, I've been too lazy to write a useradd type hook for squid. Note that installing squid with default options is rather bad.. It allows relaying globally, among other things. Things like the acl's need to be set, things like a user and the cache_effecive_user things are pretty small compared to that. Squid 2.1 BTW, default's to a closed access list and requires the user to edit in their own address masks that they want to allow access to. If you wanted to take a shot at some of those problems, I'd appreciate it. However, squid isn't likely to be an 'install-and-forget' thing. It requires fairly extensive config file editing, some crontab entries (rotate logs etc). I do not want to belittle your work, but there are bigger problems that have not been addressed. Also, squid 1.1 is depreciated by the authors and really shouldn't be used for new installations. I was thinking about deleting the 1.1 and 2.0 ports leaving the (stable) 2.1 patch 2 release. As a result, aterm uses much less swap space -- a significant advantage on a machine serving many X sessions. It was created with AfterStep Window Manger users in mind, but is not tied to any libraries, and can be used anywhere. %changelog * Thu Dec 31 1998 Ryan Weaver [aterm-0.2.0-1] - First RPM - *Converted documentation to aterm vs. rxvt - *src/features.h [ATERM_PATH_ENV]: Added ATERMPATH env. variable to define PATH where to search for files. Aterm is now looking in ATERMPATH, then RXVTPATH, and only then in PATH. - * --enable-transparency and --enable-next-scroll are now set by default. Just make sure the new releases of FreeBSD include bzip as standard then. Or make it so that the dependencies require bzip. Although when we are going to bzip files for inclusion with the CD-ROM set, then it is necessary to make it a /usr/bin addition IMHO. And which one will be the default: bzip or bzip2? But I think that starting the editor for the setup file wouldn't promise user's correct configurations. People who knows what to do for the system would check the documentations and setup without such help of ports. At least, it would not be needed when `squid.conf' already exists. If you really thought that editing squid.conf at the installation time is necessity, squid port shoud be an interactive port by setting IS_INTERACTIVE. Many ports need configuration work after the installation, but doesn't start the editor. Notifying the user some advices would be enough. Oh, another thing. And which one will be the default: bzip or bzip2? I don't > know too much about the changes between both, anyone care to enlighten? bzip2 is the currently-developed and more useful version. From archives/bzip/pkg/DESCR: Please use bzip2, which is the successor of this older bzip version. This port stays for compatibility reasons. For a discussion of the advantages of bzip2 over bzip 0.21 see http://www.muraroa.demon.co.uk/ In short: bzip2 ist faster, more reliable and *patent free* COMMERCIAL USE of bzip This program may or may not infringe certain US patents pertaining to arithmetic coding and to the block-sorting transformation itself. Opinions differ as to the precise legal status of some of the algorithms used. Nevertheless, you should be aware that commercial use of this program could render you liable to unfriendly legal action. -- Just as a lot of ports require GNU Make to build, which isn't in the base tree but is built as a dependency, there's no problem as far as I can see with adding a similar dependency on bzip2. If these libs are missing, you don't get gnomelibs and such ports build and installed ! Solution: if you configure gtk11-devel with --disable-nls, then imlib's test program (created by configure), doesn't fail with an error message, that no reference for dgettext could be found. In one header file you can see, that the *gettext functions are only build, if NLS isn't defined. A workaround would be, to explicitely disable nls for systems >= FreeBSD-3.0 in the gtk11-devel port. After that it should be discussed / resolved, whether the gtk11-devel port needs to be fixed, because *gettext functions are missing in the library if NLS is defined or if the test program in imlib needs to be fixed. cvs diff: Diffing . Everything compiles/ installs cleanly so if I don't hear any complaints from the maintainer I'll commit the attached patch.
