It appears to be a problem with interrupts from the SCSI controllers not being seen after the second CPU is launched (the same kernel in UP mode runs just fine). Breaking into the kernel debugger once I start seeing the scsi driver complain about timeouts show that I am in the idle loop and the only process running is the swapper. Generally you can have up to 4, but a guy at some company that I can't remember the name of patched FreeBSD to work with their 8-way systems. That company subsequently went out of business, so don't worry about 8-way systems for now. SMP is only supported on i386 at the moment, there is not yet any support for SMP on Alpha boxes. > -) Are there any real world suggestions to High Performance disk controllers > (SCSI, Fibre controllers, ...) If you want SCSI, I'd say go with high end Adaptec controllers, like the 3950U2 or 2940U2W. If you want Fibre Channel, the best thing to get is a QLogic board. Ask Matt Jacob if you have questions about which QLogic FC boards are supported. I currently have a Dell PowerEdge 6300 (4 x Xeon 500, 512 MB RAM, 6 x 9 GB Seagate Cheetahs, AIC 7895, Intel EtherExpress 100, no RAID yet) next to me. I just installed 4.0-current from around march 27th 1999; didn't have much time to test it though (anyway, we cannot use FreeBSD because of the database server that will run on the machine), but it seems to work very good. iozone on the cheetahs delivers about 14..15 MB/s write and 18 MB/s read performance, even when running a make -j6 world on the other disk. If I find some time, I'll ccd/vinum a bunch of disks and get a worldstone. stefan To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-smp" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-smp Wed May 19 4:46: 5 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-smp@freebsd.org Received: from sinfonix.rz.tu-clausthal.de (sinfonix.rz.tu-clausthal.de [139.174.2.33]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2662714C2B for ; Wed, 19 May 1999 04:39:55 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from nordenholz@rz.tu-clausthal.de) Received: from troubadix.rz.tu-clausthal.de (IDENT:SHQiiv1ioSv7cQaD1xqaDT01PS3zdtEY@troubadix.rz.tu-clausthal.de [139.174.2.23]) by sinfonix.rz.tu-clausthal.de (8.9.0/8.9.0) with ESMTP id NAA08655 for ; Wed, 19 May 1999 13:39:53 +0200 (MET DST) From: Thiemo Nordenholz Received: (from svtn@localhost) by troubadix.rz.tu-clausthal.de (8.9.0/8.9.0) id NAA06567 for freebsd-smp@freebsd.org; Wed, 19 May 1999 13:39:52 +0200 (MET DST) Message-Id: <199905191139.NAA06567@troubadix.rz.tu-clausthal.de> Subject: SMP on P2B-DS with 2*P-II 400 - does it work? That would be me, at Axil Computer this time last year. The machine was the Axil NX801 - 8 PentiumPro's and up to 8GB of DRAM. The same boards went into systems sold by DG and HP (NetServer LXr Pro8 ?). The kernel patches for 8 cpu's were not very big - just a couple of boot-time race conditions which didn't show up until you hit 6 cpu's. The hard bit was that the chipset had 2 IOAPIC's and lots of interrupt sources: I had a kludge that worked for a minimal system, and a plan to fix it properly, but it never got done before Axil went belly-up. These days I'm at Ikos Systems developing EDA software which can burn a lot of CPU and memory - and FreeBSD running on the Intel SC450NX quad-Xeon turns out to be the best development platform. We've bought a couple of machines from SAG Electronics (www.sagelec.com) and are very happy with them. Here's the configuration of the most recent one: Intel SC450NX 4 x Xeon-500MHz, 512K cache (Free swap to 4 x Xeon-550MHz when they become available) 4GB DRAM (16 x 256MB EDO DIMMs) Adaptec 2940U2W PCI-SCSI (onboard Symbios 53C896 crashes FreeBSD install) 6 x 9GB 7200rpm LVD SCSI disk This came to about $20K, which I believe is much much cheaper than the equivalent configuration from Dell/Compaq etc. We're running the 4.0-19990421 snapshot with a patch to /usr/src/sys/i386/i386/machdep.c to limit Maxmem to 4GB-64MB, and some tuning of kernel options. If you don't need the full 4GB DRAM then you can probably run FreeBSD 3.1 or 3.2 without much tuning (?) This machine certainly uses 4 cpu's efficiently for multiple user processes; I haven't done anything which would really test the kernel scalability so others are better placed to comment on that aspect. The only problem I have had is that the narrow scsi-2 support doesn't like more than two drives. Using a separate PCI scsi board for my 4 scsi-2 drives. The PCI IRQ assignment seems to be confused by the two sets of scsi controllers and two different ethernet cards. It took some tweaking to get everything assigned to a non-conflicting IRQ, though the AGP video board is the same as one of the scsi controllers. -- Danny J. I was running this with a Fireport 40 UW SCSI card, a WD8013WC ISA Ethernet card, and a Diamond Stealth 2000 3D PCI video card. The P6DBE (http://www.supermicro.com/PRODUCT/MotherBoards/440BX/p6dbe.htm) does not reliably run two processors. One works fine, but with two the system will boot and run for a short time but crash or hang within a few minutes. I contacted Supermicro, but they were not willing to look at the problem unless I could reproduce it using NT (not having a NT copy around, I haven't done that). I was using the Rev 1.x motherboard, and this has since been obsoleted with a Rev 2.x motherboard, so I suspect that the Rev 1.x board has some inherent hardware problems. The Rev 2.x card may well work fine - I haven't tried one. To confirm that it wasn't FreeBSD, I swapped in an Intel N440BX card, and this has worked flawlessly for a couple of weeks with the same kernel that I tried with the P6DBE card. The errors we are getting are as follows: (da0:ahc0:0:0:0): SCB 0x29 - timed out while idle, LASTPHASE == 0x1, SEQADDR == 0x8 (da0:ahc0:0:0:0): Queuing a BDR SCB (da0:ahc0:0:0:0): Bus Device Reset Message Sent (da0:ahc0:0:0:0): no longer in timeout, status = 34c ahc0: Bus Devices Reset on A:0. 3 SCBs aborted Disabling SMP seems to clear up some of this, but we were hoping to get SMP and SCSI working together. Our SCSI card is an Adaptec 2940UW2. Attached is the kernel config file in use. If this seems like a termination problem, we're doubting it since we had this working with an early version of 3.0-SNAP with CAM. Can you send dmesg output from the machine? The timed out while idle messages mean that a read or write command from the da driver timed out. Since the timeout is 60 seconds, this generally indicates a drive problem of some sort. (could be bad firmware) There are some disks that are known to cause problems, so the dmesg might help us determine the problem. In my case however, this happens on a MB-based Adaptec UW2 and ONLY when a vinum drive is active on the same channel as the tape drive. That is, ChA has 3 disks + 1 tape, 2 of the disks are in a vinum volume, the third (and terminating) disk is "normal". IF the vinum volume is active (eg fsck) with the tape drive plugged in, the tape drive blinks, and the above messages come out... boot -s , and mounting the standalone disk only does NOT display any erros. kernel is SMP, os version is 3.1, i DONT have SCSI ID clashes :-), further info available on request after my 5gb at-a-time backup of the massive volume finishes :-)) Kiril To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-smp" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-smp Fri May 28 13:50:37 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-smp@freebsd.org Received: from panzer.plutotech.com (panzer.plutotech.com [206.168.67.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BB52215AEB; Fri, 28 May 1999 13:50:24 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from ken@panzer.plutotech.com) Received: (from ken@localhost) by panzer.plutotech.com (8.9.3/8.8.5) id OAA27578; Fri, 28 May 1999 14:50:13 -0600 (MDT) From: "Kenneth D. Your SCSI hardware looks fine. So there's not a whole lot we can do about it from a SCSI standpoint. One of the SMP-knowledgeable folks will have to look into it. It looked like an interference problem with the noise of the high speed CPUs somehow getting back into the cable. After re-routing the cables away from both CPUs things worked better, but eventually I had to dump the 2940UW2 for a 2940UW which worked perfectly in the machine. I did try dropping the speed of the UW2 card before swapping, no help. I'm guessing that disabling the SMP code might be shutting down the CPU causing the trouble. Try replacing the cables, re-routing cables and or a non UW2 controller.
