The software interfaces are documented in the LAN Technical Reference: Application Programming Interface, SC30-3587. The adapter reference is part of a Bill of Forms (SBOF-6221) that contains three other manuals: LAN Technical Reference: Token-Ring Network Adapter Interface, SC30-3588; LAN Technical Reference: Ethernet Adapter Interface, SC30-3661; and the LAN Technical Reference: Token-Ring Network 16/4 Busmaster Server Adapter Interface, SC30-3663-00. The LAN Technical Reference: Application Programming Interface describes the CCB and NCB software interfaces; the manuals in the BOF describe the various adapter interfaces at the MAC layer. The active monitor is important is that is controls clocking, propagation delays, etc. Most importantly it removes frames that have circled the ring. It does this by reading the monitor bit. Are you losing functionality or connectivity after the "no active monitor" error? This might be an informational message and your node will assume the role of active monitor. Check out http://www.faqs.org/faqs/LANs/token-ring-faq/ There is a breakdown here of the Active Monitor contention process. It appears if no AM is found and the contention process fails, insertion will fail.. You are inserting succesfully though so again this might be informational. Thanks and letme know if this helps cause I need to put FreeBSD on tokenring soon. :) Bert On Sun, 18 Apr 1999, Nicolai Petri wrote: > I finally managed to get the IBM Pci Driver to enter the ring. To prevent the ring speed from incorrectly set, usually the adapters will not open if it is the first one on the ring. The microcode will report "No active Monitor". Change open option from autosense to manual 4 or 16 Mbps. You will not have any problem being first one on the ring. Most of the token ring cards I've seen so far claim to be register compatible with the IBM boards so its possible that people could use the tok driver until native support is written for other cards.
