Install the docproj port if you're going to help. You can use cvsup to get the
sgml source for the -doc project. See /usr/share/examples/cvsup ; use the
doc-supfile to get the source.

Happy New Year, everyone!
With the world apparently still in one piece after the celebrations and the few
Y2K incidents, I guess we're back to our regular transmissions.
Since this message is going outside of -doc where it has been discussed
before, I'll offer up a full explanation of what's going on.
What is proposed is a system where all the documentation installed through the
ports system, or locally by a sysadmin, is collected together and indexed on
one HTML page; say /usr/local/share/doc/instdocs.html
This page is created by a perl script, docindex, which I envisage being run
either from a /etc/periodic/* or /etc/rc or both.
The script gets its information from +DOCS files contained within the
/var/db/pkg directory for each installed port. These files consist of three
fields, colon seperated. The first field being the name of the item of
documentation, the second being a filetype, and the third a full path to the
file.
For example, for Sharity Light :
FAQ:txt:/usr/local/share/doc/Sharity-Light/FAQ
README:txt:/usr/local/share/doc/Sharity-Light/README
In addition the local sysadmin can add similarly formatted files into, say,
/etc/docs.local/ that will also be read in and included in the index.
In order to help the ports maintainers, and others, create these DOCS files that
will be needed, there is a script called docsmaker. This script has a _very_
rough guess from the CONTENTS file of a port what might be documentation. But I
stress that the file which it creates will still need to be checked for files
that shouldn't be there, files that have been missed, and any other
stupid mistakes. :-)
Right, I think I'm just about finished. Apart from to say that current versions
of the scripts I've been talking about and example outputs from all this are
available from http://ukug.uk.freebsd.org/~andrew/docindex/
Does anyone have any thoughts or comments on how to proceed?
Many thanks!

In reference to section 6.3.1.1.3 of the docproj-primer, how does freebsd
plan to include images in each chapter?
Currently, when typing "make" in the /usr/doc/en_US-ISO_8859-1/, the
appropriate html files are created in the same directories as the
book.sgml files. If I were to include an image in a chapter directory,
it would probably look something like this in the sgml source:
The problem is that this code translated to html will result in:
Now that's not right, is it? The html file is in the book.sgml directory
whereas the image is in the chapter directory. How can this be fixed?
Looking forward to your ideas,
Marc Tardif

This is TeX, Version 3.14159 (Web2C 7.3.1)
which is a bit more recent.

Never seen that. What happens if you remove book.tex and start again?

The doc/ tree (which contains the SGML files, the DTD, and the Makefile
infrastructure necessary to build the docs) is available in the same
way that the src/ and www/ trees are available -- either using CVSup or
CTM. See the "Staying -current with FreeBSD" section in the Handbook to
read up on how to use them.
Briefly, however, if you want to keep a local copy of the doc/ tree
around for testing, you want a supfile that looks like this:
*default host=cvsup.xx.freebsd.org
*default prefix=/home/ncvs
*default base=/usr/local/etc/cvsup
*default release=cvs delete use-rel-suffix compress umask=002
doc-all
Save this as /usr/local/etc/supfile, edit the 'host' line to specify an
actual CVSup mirror, and then run cvsup,
cvsup /usr/local/etc/supfile
This will then create a copy of the doc/ tree CVS files in /home/ncvs/doc,
and you can check out a copy of the most recent tree with
% cd ~/somewhere/to/check/out/the/files
% cvs -d /home/ncvs checkout doc
You can then build the documentation with
% cd doc
% make
Read share/mk/doc.*.mk to see the various variables you can set to control
the build process.

Absolutely correct.
> How can this be fixed?
The only solution I've thought of so far is a bit of a kludge, but it will
work.
Assume that the names of all the images are listed in the document's
Makefile in a variable. This variable includes the partial path to the image.
Something like this;
IMAGES= kernelconfig/link-list.gif linux/penguin.gif disks/winchester.gif
and so on.
The "all" target would be responsible for symlinking these images in to the
top level directory.
all:
...
.for _curimage in ${IMAGES}
ln -s ${_curimage} `basename ${_curimage}`
.endfor
The "install" target would be responsible for installing these images into
the top level of the installation directory. And the "clean" target gets
rid of them again.
It's not quite that simple. For example, I expect that the IMAGES list
will have to avoid specifying file extensions. If we're building the
HTML format then a .gif extension will have to appended by the Makefile,
if we're building PS or PDF format then a .eps extension will be appended
by the Makefile.
In addition, I think there will be some cases where there is no need to store
both formats in the repository -- the use of tools like the netpbm utils
might make it more appropriate to store TIFF or PNG files in the repository,
and then convert them as part of the build process.
Thoughts? If you're planning on implementing something like this, I'd
welcome patches.

Does that mean directly on the top level, or top_level+directory+image? It
would have to be the later, considering the doc-primer documentation
mentioned an advantage of having the images in their respective
directories would allow to use same image names without causing any
conflict. I am also all for it, but I'm not sure if your solution can deal
with that.
I could be wrong though. If so, please explain where the installation
creates the respective directories in the DOCDIR, ie the destination
directory for the created files.
Thanks your previous answer, quite inspiring.

Hi, I would like to add some info on the Compaq IDA driver support in
FreeBDS.
I recently (well yesterday) installed BSD on my ida in my regualar Clone
machine, and I want to help others not to run into the same problems.
Tell them how to config the controller etc. etc.
But, im not sure where to put it in to the handbook. IMO it should probably
be linked to somewhere in the install segment, because thats where people
would run into problems.

Current FreeBSD problem reports
The following is a listing of current problems submitted by FreeBSD users.
These represent problem reports covering all versions including
experimental development code and obsolete releases.
Bugs can be in one of several states:
o - open
A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed.
a - analyzed
The report has been examined by a team member and evaluated.
f - feedback
The problem has been solved, and the originator has been given a
patch or a fix has been committed. The PR remains in this state
pending a response from the originator.
s - suspended
The problem is not being worked on. This is a prime candidate
for somebody who is looking for a project to do.
If the problem cannot be solved at all,
it will be closed, rather than suspended.
c - closed
A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated,
documented, and tested.
Critical problems
Serious problems
Non-critical problems

The printer has always worked fine. But about a month ago, we had to
get a new ink cartridge. The printer has not worked since then. We
sent it to be checked out and repaired. They said the ink cartridge was
empty, and when they used a different one it worked. We got the printer
back, put in new ink cartridge and it still does not work. Please
e-mail us and give us some ideas on what to try.

Did you send this to the FreeBSD documentation project mailing

There are also some PC BIOS-related problems.
There are lots of critical sizes for ATA disks:
0.5284GB (C/H/S = 1024/16/63) (limit for MFM disks and old software)
8.4557GB (C/H/S = 1024/256/63) (1024-cylinder limit for old software)
8.4552GB (C/H/S = 16383/16/63) (the ATA standard was changed in 1997 to
require the default C/H/S for large drives
to be precisely 16383/16/63 instead of a
geometry that actually allows access to
the entire drive. In other words, the
firmware is required to be specially broken
to limit the damage caused by old software.
This broke non-broken software like the 1996
FreeBSD wd driver.)
33.8228GB (C/H/S = 65536/16/63) (the FreeBSD wd driver now converts from
C/H/S = 16363/16/63 to actual_C/16/63.
This is horribly broken when
actual_C > 65536. The hardware only
supports 16-bit cylinder numbers, and
writing to cylinder 65536 actually writes
to cylinder 0.)
136.9020GB (C/H/S = 65536/16/255) (limit of CHS addressing)
137.4389GB (LBA mode) (limit of 28-bit LBA addressing)
Notes: 1GB = 10^9 bytes. All sizes are rounded down. The sector size
is assumed to be 512.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am sending this mail to inform you that there is a mirror of
FreeBSD available in the National Technical University of Athens
FTP site (Greece). The URL is ftp://ftp.ntua.gr/pub/FreeBSD/,
please add it to the mirror list found at
http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/mirrors-ftp.html
It would be highly desirable to have a CNAME in the FreeBSD.org
domain too, like ftp.gr.FreeBSD.org. We are mirroring daily from
ftp.fr.freebsd.org.
Best regards, and wishes for a happy new year!
Costas Kotsokalis - NTUA/NMC

+The
+.Fn microtime
+and
+.Fn getmicrotime
+functons stores the system time as a
+.Ft struct timeval
+at the address specified by
+.Fa tv .
+The
+.Fn nanotime
+and
+.Fn getnanotime
+functions perform the same utility, but record the time as a
+.Ft struct timespec
+instead.
+.Pp
+.Fn Microtime
+and
+.Fn nanotime
+always query the timecounter to return the current time as precisely as
+possible. Whereas
+.Fn getmicrotime
+and
+.Fn getnanotime
+functions are abstractions which can alternately return a less precise, but
+faster to obtain, time. This behaviour can be toggled via the
+kern.timecounter.method sysctl variable:
+.Bl -tag -width ABC

+return the more precise time (the same as calling

+.El
+.Pp
+The "uptime" variants of these functions return the time since system boot rather
+than absolute time, but are otherwise identical. These are well suited for time
+interval measurements.
+.Pp
+The intent of the
+.Fn getmicrotime ,
+.Fn getnanotime ,
+.Fn getmicrouptime ,
+and
+.Fn getnanouptime
+functions is to enforce the user's preference for timer accuracy versus execution time.

Can I contribute a binary file with .Xmodmap files, gifs of
international keyboards and a readme? The problem with Xmodmap files is
that some East European characters will not give what the symbols say
they should give.

Hi,
I went to http://www.freeBSD.org/search/search.html looking to search at
freebsd-arch mailing list
something about threads implementation. At OpenBSD lists it is said that
here we can find more details about this subject. I know that also I can
browse the other lists but I was curious why it does not exist the
possibility to search also for freebsd-arch list?
thanks,
stef

Hello,
I tried using the Dictionary at this site: German > English translation
and every German word I put in the search came up with "nothing found."
Is there another site you can recommend where I can get full page
translation of German to English?

Not sure what category this belongs in.
installworld for 3.4-STABLE today (1/5/00).
>Description:
Two issues. First, installworld wants to put items in
/usr/share/examples/diskless/209.157.86.12, which didn't exist on my
system (so I created it and re-installed, but newbies won't know to do that,
which is why I thought this should be high priority).
Second, what it put in there may be of concern to someone:
freebie 510: pwd;ls
/usr/share/examples/diskless/209.157.86.12
./ README ssh_host_key

Are you sure ? This problem was fixed in src/etc/mtree/BSD.usr.dist
(rev. 1.146.2.11) at 22 Dev, 1999. Looks like you have problems with sources
updates.

Hello ladies and gentlemen,
I just went through some major pains getting my parallel port ZIP drive
to work under FreeBSD 3.2. As it turns out, I seem to have hit every
possible contingency ( My system has a SCSI root disk that had to be
wired down to prevent the ZIP from becoming the root device, an ATAPI
cdrom that seems to be broke, and my ZIP drive is attached to a second
parallel port that had an IRQ conflict with sio2 ) As a result, I've
learned quite a bit from reconfiguring my kernel about 20 times (mainly
because I thought I had screwed up the cdrom config), and I
thought I'd better document the experience before my emotional defense
mechanisms step in and block out all memories of the incident.
(Sounds a bit like the life of George Costanza, doesn't it?)
Anyway, I wrote up an HTML doc covering everything I know about ZIP
drives under FreeBSD, and you're welcome to use it in the handbook if you
like. Let me know if you think it needs any tweaking to fit in.
Cheers,
-Jason

Ahh, I see. We have some duplicate entries (ip.forwarding, for example).
A reference to inet(4) from here would be enough. Let's leave it to
-docs committers. Any takers?

Jason,
I recently started working on the Zip drive part of the handbook. This
does not prevent anyone else from writing for that section of the book.
Since you certainly had more problems getting your Zip drive to work then
I did mine, you have much more information on what can go wrong and how to
fix it then I do. At the very least I will be using your paper as a
reference (and giving you credit) and with your permission I will
integrate my efforts with yours for the final Zip drive section. Of
course, if you give that permission, you would then be associated with the
FreeBSD Documentation project :-)

FWIW, I think there can be room for both kinds of document. As well as
'cannabilising' it for parts, as it were, it could pretty much move
wholesale in to the tutorials section.
Thoughts?

Absolutely. It's just a question of how to go about cannabilising it.
The more documentation there is in the more places the easier it is to
find. First I'm going to have to learn docbook.

Sure, that would be fine. Use it as a reference, plagerize it, whatever
gets the job done best.

Ooh, well... I'll have to discuss this with my attorneys

OK, it's a go.

If there's a practical reason to have two separate documents, go
ahead, but don't do it for the sake of my ego. I'd much rather see one
coherent doc with "portions contributed by some guy named after
a breakfast food..." in the fine print. That's one reason I prefer
FreeBSD - if I wanted to get protectionist about my work, I'd just
start my own distribution. :-)

+
+ FreeBSD supports a variety of different mice via the PS/2, serial and
+ USB ports. Most users choose to use the mouse daemon to handle their mouse
+ because it allows interaction in both X and on the system console.
+ For more information on the mouse daemon refer to &man.moused.8;. The
+ examples throughout this section assume that the mouse daemon is being used.
+
+
+
+ This section contains the names of specific products that the

+ listed may also be supported.

+
+
+
+ System Configuration
+ To ensure that your PS/2 mouse functions correctly with the mouse daemon

+ System Configuration
+ To ensure that your serial mouse functions correctly with the mouse daemon

+ This example assumes that the mouse is connected to COM1: and can be
+ automatically recognised by the mouse daemon.
+
+ moused_enable="YES"
+moused_type="auto"

Doug White and myself managed to get tickets to MacWorld which included
the keynote address. Doug was unable to attend the keynote due to work,
but I took a day off to attend the keynote.
When Steven Jobs was talking about MacOS X's Darwin project, he said
that it would bring Linux-like features to MacOS. He then stated that
FreeBSD was the code they were basing their new Darwin core off of.
They did misspell FreeBSD on the slides as free bsd.
I'm sure that there are movies available w/ it in his keynote.
Wes Horner also pointed out that on their new page that talks about
the latest of Mac OS X (including the new user interface that was

(they spell it correctly on the web page).

Hello there,
I bought free BSD version 3.2 at computer show in San Francisco months ago.
It has four CDs and I installed the os from 1st CD but I have other 3 CDs
left to install. How can I install them but I couldn't install. So my
question is how can I install them?
Please provide me manual if it is possible for you.
Thank you
Yan Rai

>Description:
Since DHCP was brought into the tree, rc.network was capable of launching
DHCP via
${dhcp_program} ${dhcp_flags} ${ifn}
for a given network $ifn.
To trigger this, you set the rc.conf variable
ifconfig_
to DHCP like so:
ifconfig_="DHCP"
But this is not documented in the man page for rc.conf. One will only find it
by grepping rc.network.

The paragraph about the multi-user capabilities of FreeBSD didn't read
very well. This patch makes my suggested changes.
Perl isn't mentioned as one of the development tools. This patch
also makes that change.
Could someone please take a look at these small problems.
