I have two questions regarding the configuration of vmware2 on a machine
running FreeBSD-current/SMP (with 2 PIII processors).

First, I run a scsi-only system. I have an Intel DK440LX mobo, and it has
dual Adaptec scsi busses. I have two cdroms in it right now, one a
reader, the other r/w. The configuration wizard wanted me to pick a
device in /compat/linux/dev, but none of the ones in there are my cd0 and
cd1. I know how to use mknod, but I'm not sure that's the right thing to
do for scsi compatibility. Does anyone know.

In fact, is there any specific option I should be setting in my kernel
config file to support this? I already have COMPAT_LINUX, and (in
general) linux stuff runs just dandy, which is why I decided to try this
neat toy.

Last question: the first time I brought vmware up, it asked me the
location of about 5 executeables (I remember that 'less' was one of
them). I answered with their correct full path locations, UNTIL I got to
one that I didn't recognize, I think it was something like "insmon" I
went thru the sources trying to find real hard where this was called out
(I grepped for less, and just couldn't find a hit that looked right,
although there were a hundred uses of "flawless" all right :-)

I can't get any more specific, but anyone recognize this, and know how to
react to it? When I start up vmware, it comes up with 5 small windows
telling me that it couldn't find an executeable (I wish it would say which
one!)

I haven't yet got thru the vmware-wizard, because when I couldn't answer
the cdrom question, I cancelled it out.

Thanks!

Hi,

I have just installed VMWare V2 on a FreeBSD 4.0 system and have found that it hoggs
the CPU, is this normal, is there anyway of stopping it. I have run both NT 4.0 and
Win98 and they both do this.

Any pointers would be apreciated

Cheers

Mark

You can renice(8) the process, according to the `VMware Product FAQ'.

I talked to their tech support. They say that they don't know if it
works on FreeBSD. However, they are soon going to be releasing a eval
version so we can try it out.

I spoke to these folks at a Linuxworld a while back. The product is
basically a port of SCO's DOS/Merge, and AFAIR requires a kernel module.
If the module is released in source form, the work should be fairly easy.
When I spoke to them, they weren't sure about the module, but did suggest
that the interfaces to it would be well documented.

First of all, I would expect all of you to watch the port's trend and
upgrade to the latest version if you have a problem. (That applies not
only VMware2 port but any other ports)

Yes, directories do not show all that actually exist under Linux
compatibility mode, but you can specify cd0, cd1 or whatever that
exists in /dev. Read the Handbook to learn how the Linux
compatibility mode works.

I think the latest port doesn't cause this problem. I supplied a
reason why it happened recently in the -ports and -question lists and
then fixed the port. Check it out.

I just got an email from these people. They say that they are interested in
supporting FreeBSD but have their hands full now. I am waiting to find out
if the source code is going to be available or not.

If you're talking about the path thing, my path already had first sbin,
then bin, then everything else (/usr/bin, /usr/local/bin/ etc etc) so that
isn't it. I have linprocfs mounted now right, and I was already using
your vmware2 port. This seemed to be your target in the mail messages I
saw, was I reading the right message, about the path and linprocfs?

It is still asking me about those 5 binaries (and it still won't tell me
their names in the error message). This is no longer stopping it from
starting up (now that I have linprocfs mounted right) but now, on starting
up the cpu in vmware, it immediately panics the vmware (not my kernel, the
vmware defines "panics" too) and exits none too gracefully

If you need a tester on this, running vmware2 (paid license) and current,
I will do that.

I have attached a ktrace file, parsed with linux_kdump that I generated
from a failing linux program. Unfortunately, I am not a skilled
programmer. The only thing I can make of it is that there is a problem
with linux_socket calls.

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there,

I'm running vmware 2.0, latest port (cvsup-ed today) on FreeBSD 4.0-STABLE
SMP with 2 processors and I get the following messages in an info window
when I try to start up vmware:

         Cannot open vmware executable file.
    _ Possibly an installation error?
(_) Cannot open vmware executable file.
   | | Possibly an installation error?
   | | Cannot open vmware executable file.
   |_| Possibly an installation error?
         Cannot open vmware executable file.
         Possibly an installation error?
         Module 10 initialization succeeded.

After that I can do the whole configuration bit, but when I press Power On
I get the following error message:
   ___
  / _ \ Could not open /usr/local/lib/vmware/vmm
 | \| | (No such file or directory)
 | |\ | ----------------------------------------
  \___/ OK

Sorry for the lousy ASCII-art :-), but I think the messages are clear.
Anybody know what causes these problems and how to fix them? I did a simple
make install of the vmware2 port. I have the following modules loaded:

# kldstat
Id Refs Address Size Name

Mount Linux procfs on /compat/linux/proc. See the linprocfs(5)

The trace tells me that linux_socket is working fine but that the server
has dropped the connection...

It may be related to the problem I found with too many file-descriptors
and the Linux Framemaker beta. Setting "ulimit -n 1024" or fewer before
launching Frame allows it to run just fine. It's worth a try to see if
it solves your problem.

Is there any way of accessing a raw partition on a SCSI device?

I can get vmware to open up the raw disk and display the MBR partitions
so I can set ro/rw etc for each one but when it tries to boot the OS in
the partition it complains that it is not a raw device.

Anyone managed to use a raw partition on a SCSI disk? I've got a 20Gb
NTFS disk that I'd really like to access from vmware :-(

Paul.

Don't use raw partitions. Use "plain" disks. See the howto file that the port
installs.

Thanks for the reply.

The server is the program that I referred to as failing. I set up a
linux box today to verify that the program does work under linux. So,
with FreeBSD running the client and Linux running the server, it
works. The server program is an RPC daemon process that authenticates
via rhosts. I can rsh between the hosts just fine but it seems that the
RPC process can not authenticate. So I am pretty sure it is something
going on in the linux layer of FreeBSD. I have some more debug info that
hopefully will be useful.

Below is some debug output from the client that is trying to connect.

The server debug output looks the same when run from Linux so it seems
that the binary is launching OK. It is the communication that is
breaking, apparently due to an inability to authenticate. I set up a
hosts.equiv file in /compat/linux/etc but that did not help.

The first failure is on the 4/19 build, while it did build on 4/14.
Machines are all running 4-stable from 4/11 with a 5-current snapshot
in the chroot dir. The snapshot has been upgraded on 4/19 so that may
have been the trigger.

As reported on -current as well, this is caused by a change in the ELF
branding. My guess is that a 5-CURRENT brandelf is used with a 4-STABLE
kernel. This, now, doesn't seem to work anymore. I'm not really happy
with it this way. I'd hoped for more backwards compatibility than we
have now. Ah well...

W.r.t NT: if you disable the rtc device, it should not use 100% CPU.

Not that I know of at this time, but that's because I haven't been able
to check anything :-(

I'm still messing around trying to get vmware2 to operate. I decided to
try to reinstall the ports/emulators/linux_base port, and deinstalling it
took out the linux/dev directory. Reinstalling it did not put it back.

I have *some* of the devices back, but I don't know enough about what
Linux devices are, to stick all the stuff back in. I need my scsi disks,
I think, and my cdrom is scsi too. How about my ttys ... I have some of
my tty's in there, but I'm not at all sure I have softlinked things
correctly, because I don't know what Linux is expecting.

Anyone running vmware with scsi disks (and cdrom) mind sending me a ls -l
of their linux/dev? In fact, it might not be a bad idea to send to the
list, because I couldn't find this info in the mail archives anywhere.

Hi
I've got a question:
Is it possible to run FreeBSD executable, that uses Linux libraries?
Has anyone tried to do that?

Regards,Max

No, since an executable and any shared libraries it uses have to agree
on certain basic things, like what the layout of a struct FILE { } is,
the size of an off_t, etc. Linux and BSD have completely different
libc's, so you're probably better off installing the linux_devel port
and compiling Linux binaries with that.

The only case I can think of that would work is a Linux library that
calls no external functions and references no data outside the library
itself. A library implementing strcpy(), for example, would work. A
library doing ANY file access, be it stdio or filedescriptor-based,
will fail.

I just bought and installed vmware2 on a very fresh 4.0-STABLE system.
/compat/linux/dev is mostly bare except for hda, hdb (which I don't
use), rtc, null, and some tty* links.

I didn't softlink any devices by hand, and everything seems to be
working fine. I have a physical disk that I already had NT4 Server
installed on that I am now running under vmware. To get that to work,
I simply set up a "plain disk" with the reported geometry for the
drive, like so:

ad1: 4112MB <WDC AC24300L> [8912/15/63] at ata0-slave using UDMA33

DRIVETYPE IDE
CYLINDERS 8912
HEADS 15
SECTORS 63
ACCESS "/dev/ad1" 0 8321840

Notice I used the FreeBSD device, not a linux device. It doesn't seem
to care.

Would vmware know the difference between, for example, /dev/ad1 and
/dev/da1? If not, SCSI or IDE devices should work equally well.
I'll find out as well once I get this working at home, since I have
SCSI disks there.

Hello,

I'm having a problem with a Sybase (for linux) library reference. I've
tried posts on -questions, php3-help@lists.php.net, sybase-l but so far
no help. I don't think there are many people out there running Sybase
on FreeBSD trying to use apache/php3.

Running 3.1-RELEASE, apache-1.3.12, php-3.0.16, sybase-11.0.3.3.

I've configured and compiled php3 into libphp3.so. When I attempt to start
apache, it tells me...

# apachectl start
Syntax error on line 215 of /usr/local/etc/apache/httpd.conf:
   Cannot load /usr/local/libexec/apache/libphp3.so into server:
   /usr/lib/libcs.so: Undefined symbol "intl_cstrbuild"
/usr/local/sbin/apachectl start: httpd could not be started

Any ideas on this? I'm no UNIX guru by any stretch of the imagination.
I do, however, want to get this environment running as a prototype and
proof-of-concept for a low-cost, high-speed, web/db platform. I'm
afraid if I can't figure this out, I'll have to use linux, where I
have even less experience, yikes!

You're missing a library that either apache or php needed to
be linked against so the run time loader could access it.
You don't say, but do you have the linux compatibility module installed?
Did you build apache from ports or by hand?

Yes, I have the linux compatibility module installed.
The proof is sybase runs.

The library /usr/lib/libcs.so was installed from the
sybase rpm. The file in /usr/lib is a symbolic link
to /opt/sybase/lib.

I actually installed apache from the package
apache-php3-1.3.4. I tried building apache
from apache source but failed miserablly. Since
the package is compiled with DSO, I figured I
could make a php DSO using php3 from php.net

Would having the linux_devel package installed
make any difference? I tried it once but gcc
failed immediately.

Yes, with sybase support, here's the command line...
   # ./configure \
   ? --with-sybase-ct=$SYBASE \
   ? --with-apxs=/usr/local/sbin/apxs

I did NOT link php against libcs.so. So should my
configure look like this?

   # ./configure \
   ? --with-sybase-ct=$SYBASE \
   ? --with-apxs=/usr/local/sbin/apxs \
   ? --with-lcs

Good, it takes up a lot of precious disk space.
I can't try it until tomorrow morning. I hope this
works, I've started loading SuSE linux on another
box just in case :(

My recommendation is not to use the ports for Wine but to use a CVS tree
or the .tar.gz snapshots of Wine themselves, which in general work fine
for me.

Unless some Linuxism has crept in, once more, but in that case *please*
help us by submitting a patch for Wine that fixes that. (I have been doing
so repeatedly in the past and Jürgen Lock has taken care of several bigger
issues, but it's getting somewhat frustrating to have to do that kind of
stuff all alone... :-/ )

I did a little research and you need to install freeTDS
check http://www.freetds.org for more info.

From the FAQ I got this ...

3.3 How do I compile PHP 3 with FreeTDS?
Simply follow the PHP directions but use /usr/local/freetds (or your
freetds directory if different) instead of the sybase directory.

So you'll have to install freeTDS first, then do the following
SYBASE=/path/to/freetds
export SYBASE
# ./configure --with-sybase-ct=$SYBASE --with-apxs=/usr/local/sbin/apxs

I've downloaded sybase myself and i'll give it a whirl over the weekend.
Let me know what happens on you end ...

Hi all,
I've posted a question before asking why when I run
vmware version 2 from the ports collection, I don't
seem to be executing inside the /compat/linux
directory. It has trouble finding the required
libraries which can be found inside the /compat/linux
libraries.
Nelow is the error message when I click the power on
button.

I am using FreeBSD 5.0 current as of today (29 April

thanks

This patch is required to compile current Wine on FreeBSD 3.4.

	#include <sys/types.h> before <sys/socket.h>.

In general I believe that, as soon as anything from <sys/...> is
included, <sys/types.h> should come as the very first. (Do you
agree, Patrik?)
