Ugly hack follows. 1) cd /usr/ports/vmware; make install 2) cd ../vmware2; make 3) pushd /usr/local/lib/vmware/lib/modules; rm *.ko; popd 4) cp work/vmware-distrib/vmmon-only/*.ko /usr/local/lib/vmware/lib/modules 5) cp work/vmware.sh /usr/local/etc/vmware.sh Now it works. Basically, you need the kernel modules from the newer VMware. The ones that come from the vmware1 port lock up the FreeBSD 4.1 kernel. I don't know how to automate this process. -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Vivek Khera, Ph.D. Khera Communications, Inc. We have the August 21th snapshot of Wine in ports now. In addition to being slightly outdated by now, it is a known fact that it doesn't compile on -CURRENT, but at the time this went in there was no alternative so it was decided that it was better to have it non-working on -CURRENT than anything else. However, since then the 20000909 snapshot has hit the Net. (There was also a 20001002 snapshot at one time and I still have it, but it has since disappeared without a trace from the ftp servers and has not worked anyway.) This September snapshot works on my -CURRENT system from yesterday (note not only compiles, but also *works*, I am using the latest Windows 95 version of RealPlayer with it in this moment, while also compiling Mozilla and running Enlightenment+GNOME. This load would almost certainly cause bad sound quality and intermittent scratches on Windows, but not here. UNIX rocks!) It compiles cleanly, only using the patches that are in place now (they all apply cleanly) So, is there any reason why we do not update the wine port so that others might enjoy this thinggy, too? :-) [Maintainer of the port cc'd] Also, although I do not have a -STABLE machine here, but if testing on -CURRENT is needed, please just tell me, and I'll be in a minute!:-) (And Wine is getting better really by the snapshot, BTW.) -- Regards: Szilveszter ADAM Szeged University Szeged Hungary To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-emulation" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-emulation Fri Oct 13 5: 3:12 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Received: from vexpert.dbai.tuwien.ac.at (vexpert.dbai.tuwien.ac.at [128.130.111.12]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2ADF137B502 for ; Fri, 13 Oct 2000 05:03:03 -0700 (PDT) Received: from [128.130.111.77] (taygeta [128.130.111.77]) by vexpert.dbai.tuwien.ac.at (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id OAA14258; Fri, 13 Oct 2000 14:02:56 +0200 (MET DST) Date: Fri, 13 Oct 2000 14:02:56 +0200 (CEST) From: Gerald Pfeifer To: Szilveszter Adam Cc: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Wine update In-Reply-To: <20001013130601.A14178@petra.hos.u-szeged.hu> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Fri, 13 Oct 2000, Szilveszter Adam wrote: > However, since then the 20000909 snapshot has hit the Net. I had prepared updates for the 20000909 and 20001002 ports, but these caused significant problems on -STABLE in that, essentially, Wine stopped working. It caused me quite some headaches, but with the help of Ulrich Weigand we traced this down to a bug in the GCC port that is used on 4.1-RELEASE and I am currently testing a workaround by Ulrich. > This September snapshot works on my -CURRENT system from yesterday > (note not only compiles, but also *works* Cool! > So, is there any reason why we do not update the wine port so that > others might enjoy this thinggy, too? :-) [Maintainer of the port cc'd] Thanks for the Cc. Oh. I am sad to hear that. (20001002 did not work for me either, it could not load its kernel after starting up. But as I mentioned it has since disappeared, maybe because it was a too problematic snapshot, and no new snaps have since been produced...) > It caused me quite some headaches, but with the help of Ulrich Weigand we > traced this down to a bug in the GCC port that is used on 4.1-RELEASE and > I am currently testing a workaround by Ulrich. Hmmm. It is good that the problem got resolved, but I take both 4.1 and -CURRENT use the same gcc version... (2.95.2) Or am I missing something? On my 4.1-RELEASE box I just downloaded 20001002 (with `make`) and it compiles and runs fine after some updates to the port. > Hmmm. AFAIK, -CURRENT uses a snapshot of GCC 2.96 which may have some bugs. >> ...and will send this to you, so that you can double check it. > Yes, certainly! I built, installed and deinstalled, and ran Notepad, Calc, Solitaire and Forte Agent on FreeBSD 4.1-RELEASE with my current patch set for 20001002 so I went ahead and submitted it as PR ports/21961. ;-) If you can give these patches a try on -CURRENT, I'd certainly appreciate that!
