Oops, then drop my message. I'm not fluent with anything other than ppp(8). I just read "how to get the if address (most probably for routing corrections / additions) with dyn ips" and confused it with what I have here -- since I could never imagine why I should do PPP in kernel space. Where can I read more about the reasoning to use kernel space ppp except for "doing what I got used to do" or "I don't care, both suffice and one of them is smaller"? What are the advantages? Is it that more efficient in scenarios userland ppp cannot handle any longer? There must be a reason to "buy" the lower functionality ... Most people use whats easier for them/what they are used to. Besides corner cases (which are subject to heavy flamewars and none at all clearly marked) there probably is no technical reason pro or cons any of these. I myself use in-kernel ppp because (1) I used to run a router with only 4 MB RAM, and spawing ppp on dial-in caused a significant delay vs. the in-kernel solution and (2) my provider charges heavily for the second channel (the only thing missing from the in-kernel stuff from my POV). For NetBSD there are other reasons, because the in-kernel version has diverged quite a bit (IPv6, ALTQ, ...) but no real world user will notice if not explicitly looking for differences. (Note that I know ~ nothing about state of affairs in FreeBSD-current nor have looked at userland ppp in detail during the last half year). Talking about support (or lack thereof) of channel bundling, I believe I'm bitten by what I consider to be a bug^H^H^Hunnecessary feature... I'm using isp0 to connect with a cisco (which *has* to initiate the call, since it cannot receive calls due to the configuration of the PBX). I do not have the option to use PPP encapsulation, and the damn thing keeps trying to establish a 2nd B after about 10 minutes of >60kbps! If the 2nd B is busy, it fails and tries again every 5 minutes, but if it's not, i4b answers a 2nd call for isp0 while the 1st is allready taking place, thus screwing things up pretty badly - I have to put the interface down and up again for packets to flow again :( Unfortunately I cannot change the behaviour of the cisco, but considering the fact that i4b does not support channel bundling, wouldn't it be a good idea if it rejected a call for an interface that has one allready in place? I could live with rejecting a call every 5 minutes. It shouldn't be hard to add this functionality, but I tried to do it and failed miserably since I don't know my way around the i4b source tree. Perhaps someone could consider making this minor change or point out to me a good place to start in the source tree. TIA, K.
