I have some questions about threads : 1. Does FreeBsd 3.4 have native thread support or is it simulating threads like jdk green threads. 2. Does jdk1.1.8 have native thread support. These patches are unofficial and no abuse should be directed towards the FreeBSD java porting team for them :). This new set (patchset 6) can be gotten from http://www.eyesbeyond.com/freebsd-jdk122-patches-6.tar.gz (this message is included in the tar ball as the file ANNOUNCEMENT). Note that the latest version of the patchset can always be gotten from http://www.eyesbeyond.com/freebsd-jdk122-patches-latest.tar.gz Please read the file THANKS for a list of the large number of people who should be thanked that things have gotten this far! Most of the many improvements in this patchset are due to a merge with the code in the FreeBSD java porting team's repository. The following ISSUES have been addressed since patchset 5 (see the ISSUES files for more details). Issue 2. USE_SELECT is chosen automatically for FreeBSD 2.2.x. Also, the code for a.out support which had previously been taken out is again included. Issue 5. People will no longer get the annoying message about the Sun JIT compiler not being loaded as the default JIT compiler is now NONE. Issue 6. The build is now using a version of font.properties that is very close to the one for the Blackdown Linux JDK 1.2.2 port. However, I've included Robert Swindells' version of font.properties in the patchset for those who prefer it :). Issue 8e. The internal compiler error that was produced by some of the code in libhprof when compiling with gcc 2.7.2.3 has been worked around. Issue 12. The problem with Math.rint() has been fixed. Issue 13. The Debug Graphics pane in SwingSet now works. Issue 16. I've had no problems running some threaded applications. Additional problems that hadn't made it to the ISSUES list that have been addressed in this patchset (both thanks to Timo Geusch): 1. The JDK will now build under FreeBSD 5.0-CURRENT. 2. The "release-images" target can now be built (see the file BUILD-RELEASE). This is quite significant as it allows people to build a JDK in a releaseable form (i.e. as per the downloadable binaries for Solaris and Linux) that can then be installed and used normally. For more information about the port, consult Kees Jan Koster's web pages at http://web.inter.nl.net/users/kjkoster/java/index.html Please test as much as possible! -- Greg Lewis glewis@trc.adelaide.edu.au Computing Officer +61 8 8303 5083 Teletraffic Research Centre To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Wed Apr 19 2:11:35 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from iclub.nsu.ru (iclub.nsu.ru [193.124.222.66]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D44CD37BC07 for ; Wed, 19 Apr 2000 02:10:42 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from fjoe@iclub.nsu.ru) Received: from localhost (fjoe@localhost) by iclub.nsu.ru (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id PAA01660; Wed, 19 Apr 2000 15:57:55 +0700 (NSS) (envelope-from fjoe@iclub.nsu.ru) Date: Wed, 19 Apr 2000 15:57:55 +0700 (NSS) From: Max Khon To: Greg Lewis Cc: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Pre-alpha JDK 1.2.2 patchset 6 In-Reply-To: <200004190837.SAA32312@ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org hi, there! Shouldn't be, usually Apache runs as root initially then changes to a user defined in http(s)d.conf: often 'nobody' or 'www'. > But I also was wondering that suddenly > a /var/log/mod_jserv.log was there (0 bytes) which I definitely > didn't create by touch. There's two separate log files for Apache JServ: --- From jserv.conf --- # On Unix, this file must have write permissions by the owner of the JVM # process. In other words, if you are running Apache JServ in manual mode # and Apache is running as user nobody, then the file must have its # permissions set so that that user can write to it. # Syntax: ApJServLogFile [filename] # Default: "./logs/mod_jserv.log" # Note: when set to "DISABLED", the log will be redirected to Apache error log ApJServLogFile DISABLED Also check the jserv.properties file for the other log details. > And then I have this in httpd-error.log: (looks like mod_jserv aborts): > > [Wed Apr 19 21:36:02 2000] [notice] Apache/1.3.12 (Unix) ApacheJServ/1.1 configu > red -- resuming normal operations > java.io.IOException: Directory not writable: /var/log > at org.apache.java.io.LogWriter.(LogWriter.java:287) > at org.apache.java.io.LogWriter.(LogWriter.java:203) > at org.apache.jserv.JServLog.(JServLog.java:92) > at org.apache.jserv.JServ.start(JServ.java:233) > at org.apache.jserv.JServ.main(JServ.java:158) > [Wed Apr 19 21:40:24 2000] [error] [client 192.168.1.119] File does not exist: / > usr/local/www/data/example/Hello > > (Hello is a class) Two separate problems I think, 4 minutes apart. Servlets I often put outside the web root. But I think if you 'chown' /var/log/jserv.log to the owner defined in your Apache config file the top exception will go. Look for a 'User ...' line. > Is it OK, btw, as the install script suggests, to do: > > # > # This should be changed to whatever you set DocumentRoot to. > # > > Include etc/apache/jserv/jserv.conf > > (Include without prefix?) I'd be putting the full path to it in there, but I usually install it under one directory /usr/local/apache and have JServ has a separate directory. Also, I don't know that the Include should go in the block, I usually put it at the end of the file. Relative paths usually get prepended with the Apache installation directory, though I don't know if the block changes this rule. HTH, Joe > > > > > > > Nate > > -- > Chris Christoph P. U. I wanted to start off by giving a big thanks to everyone who is working on the JDK FreeBSD port. Using Kees Jan Koster's really helpful step-by-step build instructions I was able to get everything built last night on 3.3-release (gcc 2.7.2.3) using patchset 6. And this is despite the fact that I am not exceptionally experienced in java or porting :-) I really do appreciate everyone's work on this. I was trying to test a program that uses the 1.2 internal orb and have been having problems, so I went back to the easiest case I could think of, the hello client-server example in the sun tutorials (http://web2.java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/idl/hello/index.html). The server starts up without a problem but when I try to run the client I am getting the following: $ java HelloStringifiedClient -ORBInitialPort 1050 ERROR : org.omg.CORBA.COMM_FAILURE: minor code: 1 completed: Maybe org.omg.CORBA.COMM_FAILURE: minor code: 1 completed: Maybe a t com.sun.CORBA.iiop.IIOPConnection.purge_calls(IIOPConnection.java:45 0) at com.sun.CORBA.iiop.ReaderThread.run(IIOPConnection.java:87) This is using the Stringified IOR example, which writes the IOR to a file and then reads it back out in the client, to try to eliminate potential issues in the naming service. This is my first experience with the java 1.2 ORB implementation, so I could be doing something stupid, but this is all with unmodified example code, so I hope not :-) Has anyone else tried out the corba stuff and had any luck? Can anyone offer any suggestions for how to look into the problem further? Thanks much! I have a project that I would like to use Java for. I would like to use the latest version: 1.2.2, but I am a bit reluctant to use software that is termed "Pre-Alpha." Can anyone comment on the stability of the pre-alpha jdk, especially since the blackdown port is available as a reference (or bootstrap) - is FreeBSD's "pre-alpha" as stable as Blackdown's current version? I am running FreeBSD 4.0-RELEASE. Mr. Koster's web pages state that the pre-alpha is does not build cleanly on 4.0 systems. Is this still the case? What advantages/disadvantages are there to using a native Java over the blackdown Java running under Linux emulation? Most of the Java ports require JDK1.1.8, how difficult/possible is it to use those ports with 1) "native" 1.2.2, 2) linux-based blackdown 1.2.2? Sun's Forte IDE is now available ("Free") under Sun's community license - are there any plans to port this? Also, I understand that someone has IBM's visualage for Java working under FreeBSD - could that be made into a port? There seem to be many difficulties working with Sun. Even the Blackdown people have had difficulties (as described on their website). This may not be nefarious - it may just be a matter of scarce resources. But it seems that the more that we can show a need for Sun's attention, the better. As such, is it possible to get support from Apple, since OSX users may benefit from a Java port? I don't know that the current port has undergone enough stress testing to have a proper indication of its stability. For that reason alone I'd have to guess the current Blackdown version is more stable. > I am running FreeBSD 4.0-RELEASE. Mr. Koster's web pages state that the > pre-alpha is does not build cleanly on 4.0 systems. Is this still the case? The current patchset will build cleanly, however its missing a critical piece of functionality for 4.0 and 5.0. Expect this functionality to be present in the next patchset though (thanks Steve!) which will almost certainly be termed "alpha". > What advantages/disadvantages are there to using a native Java over the > blackdown Java running under Linux emulation? Most of the Java ports > require JDK1.1.8, how difficult/possible is it to use those ports with 1) > "native" 1.2.2, 2) linux-based blackdown 1.2.2? To answer the first question: Advantage: Its much easier to do JNI with a native port. Disadvantage: The Blackdown port has been tested much more thoroughly and includes a JIT (you need to compile a 3rd party JIT with the current FreeBSD patches -- if you want one that is). In terms of your second question, it depends upon the ports in question. > Sun's Forte IDE is now available ("Free") under Sun's community license - > are there any plans to port this? My earlier observations that Mauve produced more errors with the latest patches turned out to be an error on my side. I had goofed the compiler flags. Only the line number problem remains. Much to my surprise, sound works. I never knew that these demos had sound. A pleasant surprise. A few issues did come up in the demos, though. Almost all reproducable. More information is on my web page. Could you elaborate on the status of 2.2.8, 4.0 and 5.0 support? I understand now that 4.0 will build without DPS. Is the same true for 5.0? Does 2.2.8 build cleanly? I've some time now and want to help testing the JDK1.2.2 under FreeBSD 4.0 (Stable from mid march). After applying patchset-6 the sources compiled without any problems (no DPS). But after starting AWT/Swing demos (SwingSet, Java2Demo, AWT-Demo-Applets) the VM crashes with signal 8 (and 6) after a short popup of a window. Is this problem related to 4.0? I'm running a SMP kernel now and will try an UP kernel later... If I get this working I will test these: - Together-3.2 - Forte-1.0 - various self-written apps using JDBC, RMI, Corba, JAI, Java2D etc. These are running fine under Blackdown's RC4 except Forte which is so slow that I need to reboot into Linux if I need it :-( bye, Volker To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Sat Apr 22 2:35:33 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au (ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au [129.127.246.5]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BEDA337B711 for ; Sat, 22 Apr 2000 02:35:26 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from glewis@ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au) Received: (from glewis@localhost) by ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au (8.9.3/8.9.3) id TAA17366; Sat, 22 Apr 2000 19:05:15 +0930 (CST) (envelope-from glewis) From: Greg Lewis Message-Id: <200004220935.TAA17366@ares.trc.adelaide.edu.au> Subject: Re: VM crashes with signal 8 (Pre-alpha pachset 6) In-Reply-To: <200004220902.LAA64523@yavin.franken.de> from Volker Paepcke at "Apr 22, 2000 11:02:22 am" To: Volker Paepcke Date: Sat, 22 Apr 2000 19:05:15 +0930 (CST) Cc: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4ME+ PL70 (25)] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi Volker, > I've some time now and want to help testing the JDK1.2.2 under > FreeBSD 4.0 (Stable from mid march). You might want to hold off until then! > If I get this working I will test these: > - Together-3.2 > - Forte-1.0 > - various self-written apps using JDBC, RMI, Corba, JAI, Java2D etc. That would be extremely useful :). > These are running fine under Blackdown's RC4 except Forte which is so > slow that I need to reboot into Linux if I need it :-( I can't guarantee the native port will be any quicker. Especially since its speed is somewhat hampered by the lack of a JIT (by default). A number of the open source JITs are known to work with it though, you might like to try one out. -- Greg Lewis glewis@trc.adelaide.edu.au Computing Officer +61 8 8303 5083 Teletraffic Research Centre To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Sat Apr 22 16:25:28 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mail-ob.kamp.net (mail-ob.kamp.net [195.62.97.26]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 217CE37B828 for ; Sat, 22 Apr 2000 16:25:25 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from Joachim.Jaeckel@coffeebreak.de) Received: from coffeebreak.de (port-18.d.kamp.de [195.62.120.210]) by mail-ob.kamp.net (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id BAA07493; Sun, 23 Apr 2000 01:23:42 +0200 Message-ID: <390234B2.1A1BF324@coffeebreak.de> Date: Sun, 23 Apr 2000 01:24:34 +0200 From: Joachim Jaeckel X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.7 [en] (X11; I; FreeBSD 4.0-STABLE i386) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: John Daniels Cc: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: JDK1.2.2 References: <20000420225653.65449.qmail@hotmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org John Daniels wrote: > > Also, I understand that someone has IBM's > visualage for Java working under FreeBSD - could that be made into a port? If I've the time, I'll try to do it. For the start, (my version of VAJ is comming as a tar-archive) unpack the archive, make sure that you have the correct .Xresources file in your $HOME an try to start it (have a look at my HOWTO-page at http://www.coffeebreak.de/freebsd ) It was reported to me, that I'm not the only one who has it got to run. P.S.: The VAJ for Linux is still in Version 1.1.7 - no 1.2 Version yet! Bye, Joachim. I didn't notice doing anything special to get VAJ to work under 4.0. Works fine for me even with JNI code (of course those shared libraries have to be made with the Linux dev tools or it VAJ won't recognize them and load them). ~Mark -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mark J.
