I've included the shell script I used to execute lint on the source code (from the src/ directory). A few comments: --1-- The declaration of sysLoadLibrary in linker_md.c is: sysLoadLibrary(const char *name, char *err_buf, int err_buflen) But I believe this should be: sysLoadLibrary(const char *name, char *err_buf, size_t err_buflen) Because the err_buflen is a size of a region in the heap (which is typically a size_t), and because it is used as the 3rd arg in a call to strncpy, which takes a size_t. But this is function specified and used by Sun, so there's little that can be done to `fix' this. --2-- In schedule.c there is a function called lj_setcontext() that is declared to return an int, but it does not. Is this an error? If not, why not? --3-- Overall: Virtually all warnings generated by lint are probably nothing to worry about. Lint reports a lot of dubious operations on enums, constants in conditional contexts, and troublesome pointer casts :-) Ernst -- Ernst de Haan Freelance Java Architect "Come to me all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" -- Jesus Christ --------------498F0606055638E0F39D34FE Content-Type: application/x-sh; name="execlint.sh" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline; filename="execlint.sh" #!/bin/sh lint -aa -b -c -e -h -p -r -u -v -z -F -H -Ishare/javavm/include -Ifreebsd/hpi/green_threads/include -Ifreebsd/hpi/export -Ishare/hpi/include -Ishare/hpi/export -Ishare/javavm/export -Ifreebsd/javavm/export -Ifreebsd/hpi/include `find freebsd/ | grep ".*\.c$" | grep -v "^freebsd/test" | grep -v "^freebsd/doc/oldnmi"` --------------498F0606055638E0F39D34FE Content-Type: text/x-vcard; charset=us-ascii; name="ernst.vcf" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Description: Card for Ernst de Haan Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="ernst.vcf" begin:vcard n:de Haan;Ernst tel;fax:+31 (0)26 3645634 tel;work:+31 (0)26 3623895 x-mozilla-html:FALSE url:http://www.znerd.demon.nl/ org:Jollem adr:;;Rozendaalselaan 35;Velp;GLD;6881 KZ;Netherlands version:2.1 email;internet:ernst@jollem.com title:Java Architect fn:Ernst de Haan end:vcard --------------498F0606055638E0F39D34FE-- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Tue May 2 2: 1:51 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from hermes.research.kpn.com (hermes.research.kpn.com [139.63.192.8]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5B33837B642 for ; Tue, 2 May 2000 02:01:44 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from K.J.Koster@kpn.com) Received: from l04.research.kpn.com (l04.research.kpn.com [139.63.192.204]) by research.kpn.com (PMDF V5.2-31 #35196) with ESMTP id <01JOX7F244SI001CC3@research.kpn.com> for freebsd-java@freebsd.org; Tue, 2 May 2000 10:58:03 +0200 Received: by l04.research.kpn.com with Internet Mail Service (5.5.2650.21) id ; Tue, 02 May 2000 10:58:02 +0100 Content-return: allowed Date: Tue, 02 May 2000 10:58:00 +0100 From: "Koster, K.J." They work fine for everyone with similar setups. At least, I have had no reports that there are omissions or typos. This does not seem to be build environment related. Yes, but this only applies to classes that derive from UnicastRemoteObject, for instance. You need to execute rmic for those classes in order to generate stubs and skeletons. This is the first time in the build that the bootstrap java gets used (javac and javah both get used before this, but java doesn't). You might want to check it works in general usage? Two people have tried this, one can build it, the other cannot. Please try and report. :| Upgrading to lesstif 0.90.0 (suggested by Greg) seems to fix the problem that applets are just a little bigger than on the reference platform. Menu's still don't work properly, though. :| libcmm.so UnsatisfiedLink error is indeed gone. The Java2D demo seems to work OK. Is this fixed completely now or not? :( Demo applet audio has degraded to just static, with fragments of the actual sounds coming through. :( I have tried a little multithreaded application that I have written myself, but it does not work. The sympoms are that the screen is not repainted. If I force redraws (minimize, then maximize) the application will work. If you want to try it: http://erlecom.nl.eu.org/~dutchman/index.html. Click on "Game Preview" and follow instructions. :( There have been reports of the demo applets not painting properly on FreeBSD 4.0. I would like to know what software versions are involved. If you are seeing this, could you please send me an e-mail with the XFree86 version you are using, what color depth, what Motif library and if you use a remote X server or a local one? :? There were some issues with Software2Go Motif and Metro Link Motif. Have they been addressed and fixed? This has raised our total count to 3182, an increase of 7.75%. Additionally, it is heartening to read the comments left by those who have voted which clearly demonstrate the depth of loyalty that *BSD users have for their platform of choice. Greg Lewis, who heads the FreeBSD-java porting effort has released the first "alpha" patchset for FreeBSD, the seventh in a series of patchsets representing months of work by many *BSD-ers. These volunteers have made a tremendous effort that is sure to enhance the *BSD plaform whether Sun comes around to an "official" port or not. The best way to say "Thanks" is to 1) help with testing, 2) VOTE! FYI: I am not a part of the java porting team, just a user who would like to use a native port and support the *BSD platform. Just a point though, I'm not the leader of the FreeBSD porting effort (and am, in fact, the most recent member of the team). I'm just the one who releases the patchsets :). The patchsets are also unofficial, although obviously due to the porting teams efforts. -- Greg Lewis glewis@trc.adelaide.edu.au Computing Officer +61 8 8303 5083 Teletraffic Research Centre To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Wed May 3 17:31:17 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from sharmas.dhs.org (c62443-a.frmt1.sfba.home.com [24.0.69.165]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C5BFA37BECC; Wed, 3 May 2000 17:30:56 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from adsharma@sharmas.dhs.org) Received: (from adsharma@localhost) by sharmas.dhs.org (8.9.3/8.9.3) id RAA20943; Wed, 3 May 2000 17:29:39 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from adsharma) Date: Wed, 3 May 2000 17:29:39 -0700 From: Arun Sharma To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Cc: freebsd-hackers@freebsd.org Subject: Volanomark numbers for FreeBSD Message-ID: <20000503172939.A20878@sharmas.dhs.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 1.0.1i Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Numbers for JDK-1.1.8 (ignore the version below - it's the client version) java.vendor = Sun Microsystems Inc. java.vendor.url = http://java.sun.com/ java.version = 1.2.2 java.class.version = 46.0 java.compiler = OpenJIT os.name = FreeBSD os.version = 4.0-STABLE os.arch = i386 VolanoMark version = 2.1.2 Messages sent = 20000 Messages received = 380000 Total messages = 400000 Elapsed time = 691.682 seconds Average throughput = 578 messages per second Numbers for JDK-1.2.2: java.vendor = Sun Microsystems Inc. java.vendor.url = http://java.sun.com/ java.version = 1.2.2 java.class.version = 46.0 java.compiler = OpenJIT os.name = FreeBSD os.version = 4.0-STABLE os.arch = i386 VolanoMark version = 2.1.2 Messages sent = 20000 Messages received = 380000 Total messages = 400000 Elapsed time = 366.007 seconds Average throughput = 1093 messages per second These numbers are on a Dual Celeron 366 MHz box with OpenJIT. I spent the whole day yesterday to get it configured and get my servlets running. It was worth the effort. I followed his advice and use OpenJIT 1.1.10 with native JDK 1.1.8. It runs like a charm. So does the Blackdown Linux JDK 1.2.2 RC 4, without JIT, as I was unable to build OpenJIT for it. I think the volano tests should inlclude both configurations at this point, since the native JDK1.2 port is not ready yet. I am not sure whether it can actually run the test for starters :-) -past To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Fri May 5 4:59:56 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mimer.webgiro.com (mimer.webgiro.com [212.209.29.5]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D8E7B37B820 for ; Fri, 5 May 2000 04:59:51 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from abial@webgiro.com) Received: by mimer.webgiro.com (Postfix, from userid 66) id 6AA8C2DC07; Fri, 5 May 2000 14:03:09 +0200 (CEST) Received: by mx.webgiro.com (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 8B19E7817; Fri, 5 May 2000 13:56:16 +0200 (CEST) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by mx.webgiro.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 88F1610E17; Fri, 5 May 2000 13:56:16 +0200 (CEST) Date: Fri, 5 May 2000 13:56:16 +0200 (CEST) From: Andrzej Bialecki To: Sven Reimers Cc: Ernst de Haan , FreeBSD Java mailing list Subject: Re: IBM JDK 1.3.0 EA for Linux In-Reply-To: <3912A216.D22DBA1B@tu-harburg.de> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Fri, 5 May 2000, Sven Reimers wrote: > Hi, > > anybody got it running? We've spoken about the Volano benchmark in the past (I'm the guy that created it), and I've had very good luck with TYA personally, and have been using it for ~9 months. I'm running it on my box, and I see a 25% speedup, which is still not a monsterous speedup, but it's better than nothing. However, others have noted that OpenJIT also works well, although I don't have any personal experience using it. > > Should I > > run the Blackdown Linux JDK 1.2.2 RC 4 on FreeBSD or wait for the native > > JDK 1.2.2 port: For now, I'd got with the Linux JDK, since I doubt you'll see a binary release of the native port in the near future. I've tried to run FreeBSD's JDK 1.2.2 with patchset 7, found some problems and made fixes (patches are following this mail). Here is four different topics. 1. The _sigprocmask function (src/freebsd/hpi/green_threads/src/signals.c) has never been called. I think the _sigprocmask function is existing for wrapping syscall by way of management the consistency of signal masks between each green_threads, so it should be called for all unsafe (not well handled or considered by VM's self) sigprocmask call, safe calls may be written to call green_sigprocmask. Since patchset 7 and older's are named _sigprocmask (with underscore!), it has never called. It may be better to be renamed. 2. A part of awt's internationalization doesn't work with non-Sun's Motif. src/freebsd/native/sun/awt/awt_util.c's awt_util_getIMStatusHeight function may be used to calculates the Status Lines' height of given Widget using *VENDOR PRIVATE AREAS*, and I feel the private structure of Sun's Motif is completely different from others including Software2Go's, Lesstif and (may be Metroworks's). At this time, our best solution is always returning 0. In fact, I think this is not so bad, because it may only needed for Solaris's Motif integrated IM supports which doesn't exist in another Motif. This is just the same solution of Blackdown's 1.2-pre-v2. It helps to run demo/applet/DitherTest. 3. JIT compilers cannot handle NullPointerExceptions in JIT compiled codes. The function InitializeSignals() in src/freebsd/javavm/runtime/signals_md.c installs some signal handlers for JIT. In FreeBSD version, the handler for SIGSEGV is commented out. It is needed not only for sunwjit but also OpenJIT and shuJIT, FreeBSD version of tya seems to not use SIGSEGV but it checks whether the pointer is null everytime (this costs too high!). 4. Incompatible type between int32_t(int, FreeBSD defined) and jint(long, JDK defined) for x86. This is not so serious problem, but javah outputs prototypes using int32_t for Java's int when it works for old Native Method Interface. In Solaris there is same problem and its solution is defining int32_t long in src/solaris/javavm/include/typedefs_md.h. There seems to be another problem for me, but at this time, I cannot fix it. The probrem is Java2D demo's lockup after running several minutes. It may be JIT compiler related one but not clear. -- Fuyuhiko MARUYAMA Matsuoka laboratory, Department of Mathematical and Computing Sciences, Graduate School of Tokyo Institute of Technology. --Multipart_Sat_May__6_11:57:52_2000-1 Content-Type: application/octet-stream Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="fromPatcheset7.diffs" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Index: src/freebsd/hpi/green_threads/src/signals.c =================================================================== RCS file: /usr/vinum/cvsroot/jdk1.2.2/src/freebsd/hpi/green_threads/src/signals.c,v retrieving revision 1.1.1.2 retrieving revision 1.1.1.2.2.1 diff -u -r1.1.1.2 -r1.1.1.2.2.1 --- src/freebsd/hpi/green_threads/src/signals.c 2000/05/04 03:08:40 1.1.1.2 +++ src/freebsd/hpi/green_threads/src/signals.c 2000/05/04 11:20:09 1.1.1.2.2.1 @@ -632,10 +632,10 @@ } /* Prototype not available in standard .h files that keeps gcc happy. */ -int _sigprocmask(int how, const sigset_t *set, sigset_t *oset); +/* int _sigprocmask(int how, const sigset_t *set, sigset_t *oset); */ int -_sigprocmask(int how, const sigset_t *set, sigset_t *oset) +sigprocmask(int how, const sigset_t *set, sigset_t *oset) { int ret; sys_thread_t *self = greenThreadSelf(); Index: src/freebsd/javavm/include/typedefs_md.h =================================================================== RCS file: /usr/vinum/cvsroot/jdk1.2.2/src/freebsd/javavm/include/typedefs_md.h,v retrieving revision 1.1.1.3 retrieving revision 1.1.1.3.2.1 diff -u -r1.1.1.3 -r1.1.1.3.2.1 --- src/freebsd/javavm/include/typedefs_md.h 2000/05/04 03:26:40 1.1.1.3 +++ src/freebsd/javavm/include/typedefs_md.h 2000/05/04 14:25:43 1.1.1.3.2.1 @@ -22,8 +22,6 @@ #include #include -#ifndef __FreeBSD__ - #define int8_t char /* temporary scaffolding, to allow for back and forth testing */ @@ -32,6 +30,7 @@ #define uint32_t unsigned long #endif +#ifndef __FreeBSD__ #if defined(__alpha__) #define PTR_IS_64 1 Index: src/freebsd/javavm/runtime/signals_md.c =================================================================== RCS file: /usr/vinum/cvsroot/jdk1.2.2/src/freebsd/javavm/runtime/signals_md.c,v retrieving revision 1.1.1.3 retrieving revision 1.1.1.3.2.1 diff -u -r1.1.1.3 -r1.1.1.3.2.1 --- src/freebsd/javavm/runtime/signals_md.c 2000/05/04 03:26:40 1.1.1.3 +++ src/freebsd/javavm/runtime/signals_md.c 2000/05/04 11:25:34 1.1.1.3.2.1 @@ -449,9 +449,7 @@ * to be delivered. */ sysSignal(SIGFPE, panicHandler); -#ifndef __FreeBSD__ sysSignal(SIGSEGV, panicHandler); -#endif sysSignal(SIGILL, panicHandler); createSystemThread("Signal dispatcher", MaximumPriority, 0, Index: src/freebsd/native/sun/awt/awt_util.c =================================================================== RCS file: /usr/vinum/cvsroot/jdk1.2.2/src/freebsd/native/sun/awt/awt_util.c,v retrieving revision 1.1.1.1 retrieving revision 1.1.1.1.2.1 diff -u -r1.1.1.1 -r1.1.1.1.2.1 --- src/freebsd/native/sun/awt/awt_util.c 2000/05/04 02:18:55 1.1.1.1 +++ src/freebsd/native/sun/awt/awt_util.c 2000/05/04 11:36:52 1.1.1.1.2.1 @@ -537,6 +537,10 @@ extData = _XmGetWidgetExtData((Widget) vw, XmSHELL_EXTENSION); ve = (XmVendorShellExtObject) extData->widget; +#ifndef __solaris__ + ve->vendor.im_height = 0; + return 0; +#else if ((icp = get_iclist(vw)) == NULL) { ve->vendor.im_height = 0; return 0; @@ -655,6 +659,7 @@ XtSetValues(vw, args, 1); return height; +#endif } Widget --Multipart_Sat_May__6_11:57:52_2000-1-- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Sat May 6 1:20:17 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from ipt2.iptelecom.net.ua (ipt2.iptelecom.net.ua [212.9.224.2]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B620837B784; Sat, 6 May 2000 01:20:09 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from sobomax@altavista.net) Received: from vega.vega.com (dialup9-15.iptelecom.net.ua [212.9.228.15]) by ipt2.iptelecom.net.ua (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id LAA19164; Sat, 6 May 2000 11:20:40 +0300 (EEST) Received: from altavista.net (big_brother.vega.com [192.168.1.1]) by vega.vega.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id LAA59289; Sat, 6 May 2000 11:19:03 +0300 (EEST) (envelope-from sobomax@altavista.net) Message-ID: <3913D553.3FB9784@altavista.net> Date: Sat, 06 May 2000 11:18:27 +0300 From: Maxim Sobolev Organization: Vega International Capital X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.72 [en] (WinNT; I) X-Accept-Language: uk,ru,en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: java@freebsd.org, ports@freebsd.org Subject: Java run-time only port Content-Type: text/plain; charset=koi8-r Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi, Does anyone considering to make a stripped down version of the JDK port to provide only components necessary to run Java applications? I hate to have 26MB installed just to run one or two apps. From the quick glance I have a strong perception that at least 50 percent of the files installed only necessary for development and debugging purposes. For example I've managed to reduce footprint to 15MB by removing demo and include subdirs, removing src.zip file, and striping binaries and shared libs. There is still huge room for improvement as each library and binary came in 4 incarnations (X, no X, X with debug, no X with debug), so I suppose that it could be downsized to some 5-10MB by properly selecting components. -Maxim To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Sat May 6 8:14:52 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from ns.yogotech.com (ns.yogotech.com [206.127.123.66]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A1AB837BCC8; Sat, 6 May 2000 08:14:41 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from nate@yogotech.com) Received: from nomad.yogotech.com (nomad.yogotech.com [206.127.123.131]) by ns.yogotech.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id JAA04913; Sat, 6 May 2000 09:14:39 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from nate@nomad.yogotech.com) Received: (from nate@localhost) by nomad.yogotech.com (8.8.8/8.8.8) id JAA17519; Sat, 6 May 2000 09:14:38 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from nate) Date: Sat, 6 May 2000 09:14:38 -0600 (MDT) Message-Id: <200005061514.JAA17519@nomad.yogotech.com> From: Nate Williams MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit To: Maxim Sobolev Cc: java@FreeBSD.ORG, ports@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Java run-time only port In-Reply-To: <3913D553.3FB9784@altavista.net> References: <3913D553.3FB9784@altavista.net> X-Mailer: VM 6.34 under 19.16 "Lille" XEmacs Lucid Reply-To: nate@yogotech.com (Nate Williams) Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > Does anyone considering to make a stripped down version of the JDK > port to provide only components necessary to run Java applications? The WWW page used to have a pointer to the JRE, but a port was never made out of it. It's still on the ftp sites, although I'm not sure if the WWW site still has a pointer to it. In order to be 'legal', the JRE provided must contain all of the sources as distributed, although you might get away from stripping the non-X stuff from the JRE if the program you're running is a GUI version, or stripping the X stuff if it's a non-GUI version. Check out the ftp site and the WWW page. Interesting point. But does it apply to the case when JDK distributed in full but user have an option to install only part of it (or delete unneeded parts straight after installation)? For example: whether my current stripped down JDK should be threaten as 'illegal'? It would be rather illogical if so. -Maxim To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message
