Dear FreeBSD Java people,

I have revised the build instructions on my web site, integrating Timo's
release building instructions into Greg's. It is one step closer to what
would be called a "port" in the FreeBSD jargon. I hope you will find them
useful.

Thank you all for your involvement.

You will need to have linux_base 6.1 installed. I have had no reports that
older linux emu's work.

You can also find the blackdown port in /usr/ports/java/linux-jdk. You may
have to update your ports tree for this.

Hi:

Sun has changed the community process for Java by allowing other vendors a
greater say. Sun retains effective control (and "veto power" on Java
specs). It is my understanding that the deadline for public review has past
(was May 30th). Read more at:

http://www.computerworld.com/home/print.nsf/all/000602E4E2

Sun's Java Developer's site would probably also have more info, if you're
interested.

John

Hi:

Below is Apple's comment concerning the new Java Community Process (JCP).
Does this represent anything close to a Java port to FreeBSD? Is it in
Apple's best interest to help the FreeBSD-Java team port JDK 1.2.2 and
future JDK's? Does anyone think that Apple might voice FreeBSD, or
FreeBSD-sympathetic, concerns/issues on the Java executive commitee?

Apple has announced that they intend to track FreeBSD code as part of
Darwin/OSX. While Apple is free to do whatever they like with FreeBSD code
subject to the generous BSD license, just like anyone else, it would seem
that one would *hope* that those who benefit most, would be supportive of
the community.

Apple's comment in Sun's JCP press release:
"Apple's commitment to Java technology is strong - Mac OS X will ship
with the Java 2 platform built-in, Java technology-based applications
will be able to use the modern Aqua interface on Mac OS X, WebObjects
5 for Java will be built using 100 percent pure Java technology, and
QuickTime for Java technology brings industry standard audio and video
to Java technology-based applications," said Philip Schiller, Apple's
vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "We are thrilled to be
a part of the Java Community Process program's Executive Committee and
plan to play a major role in shaping the future of Java technology
through an open process."

FWIW, there should be an announcement about Java/FreeBSD in the next
couple of days coming out of JavaOne.

It *just* came about, and I'm not allowed to say what exactly, but I
think you'll be happily suprised.

(And, if we're lucky, the promises in the annoucement may actually come
true. :) :) :)

However, that's not to say that we (the FreeBSD developmers) wouldn't
also stand to gain something by partnering with Apple. Blackdown works
with Sun, and IBM make their own JDK offering, so working with Apple
might give us another Java option on FreeBSD.

so sun released their jdk1.3 for linux today, and as far as i can see it
seems to be working fine under linux emulation (just need to change the
java script to use /compat/linux/usr/bin/expr instead of /usr/bin/expr).
all the programs i've tried have worked, but it's giving me a strange
error message.

whenever a thread exits (i think) it prints the following error message:

Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM warning: cannot uninstall alt signal stack

does anyone have any idea what that means?

anyway, it does seem to work though.

assuming it passes a few more tests, it means i no longer have an excuse
to keep linux on my laptop ;-)

well, it works until i try and do anything with graphics ;-(

then it gives this error message:

Xlib: unexpected async reply (sequence 0x123)!

in addition to the previous one, and nothing repaints.

it may be something to do with the fact that i'm using XFree86 4.0, and
i'm willing to bet the compiled with 3.6

Any decent support of Java would have to include GUI-related
routines. What Apple needs to do for Java in MacOS 10 (which
is to say, "Quartz/Aqua") is not going to be of any use when
it comes to FreeBSD (which is to say, "X windowing system").

Now, Apple may want to support Java for Darwin, or maybe the
Darwin community outside of Apple may want to make that happen.
I am just noting that the Java-related work Apple does for
MacOS 10 may not be of much help for Java on other BSD's.

Hi, All,

The NetBeans open source site, www.netbeans.org is now
live. What's there:

 - The sources for Forte for Java CE Update Release 1
(CVS or tarball)
 - Sources and binaries for the "Jaga" 1.1 development
branch
 - Mailing lists and discussion forums
 - Infrastructure for starting new projects/modules

The sources are released under a variant of the Mozilla
license - basically,
Mozilla with the word "Netscape" changed to "Sun" and a
few other changes.

We're hoping a lot of you who've been involved in EAP
will also get involved
in the open source project.

Thanks for your support, and hope to see you at JavaOne,

Hello,

Thanks for your answer. I'm on FreeBSD 3.1 and linux_base 6.1 doesn't work
on this version. I'll have tu upgrade my system (damn !).

OK, thanks anyway and goodbye.

Hi:

I got the following warning after I did the second gmake while installing
OpenJIT for native JDK1.2.2 on a 4.0-STABLE machine:

/work/build/freebsd/include-old
-I/home/johnd/source-jdk1.2.2/work/build/freebsd/include-old/freebsd
-I./CClassHeaders -DARCH=\"X86\" -DJDK_VERSION_STRING=\"1.2.2\" -c -o
obj/rt-X86.o rt-X86.c
rt-X86.c: In function `dispatchJVM':
rt-X86.c:1027: warning: passing arg 7 of pointer to function from
incompatible pointer type
rt-X86.c: In function `OpenJIT_SignalHandler':
rt-X86.c:2383: warning: unused variable `ebp'
ld -G -o libOpenJIT.so obj/api.o obj/stubs.o obj/jdklink.o obj/rt-X86.o
gmake[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/home/johnd/OpenJIT-1.1.12'

I followed the directions on kjkoster's website.

Question: Is there a step missing? After the buildscript is run, the next
paragraph is "Install and use" but there is no install command (like "gmake
install"), only an "export PATH..." command.

I would like to install PostgreSQL which, as described in an earlier post,
installs one of two JDBC drivers, depending on the JDK installed. Has
anyone done this (Edward Wolpert?) and/or how can I install the JDK1.2.2
like a port so that it will be detected (my guess: copy the release
directory to /usr/local/jdk1.2.2; do something like a pkg_install). Should
I have done this before I installed OpenJIT (since OpenJIT asks for the path
to the JDK)?

It is harmless (or it should be :-).

You should 'gmake install' after building. The page mentions this now
that I looked.

That's right. If you do this before building OpenJIT and modify your PATH,
OpenJIT should find you native 1.2.2 installation on its own.

Greetings fellow java/freebsd lovers :)

My query is simple. How 'release-able' is the current 'port' of the
JDK1.2.2? The reason for my question is that (triumph for FreeBSD) our
Linux webserver box has been rooted and cannibalised. Usually I would
take this kind of thing seriously, but (a) we have backups (b) it shows
Linux for what it is and (c) my company may now take FreeBSD seriously,
despite the fact that I administer our firewall (FreeBSD) and run it on
my desktop with less problems than anyone else.

We need to run our custom written Java software on it, and need to be
able to run Servlets / JSP. Our systems are high end systems, and
although it's probably not good to run them using a (what I guess you
could call) beta JVM, but the software is already proven to be reliable
in this case, and merely needs patching to fit our beloved operating
system.

If there are any dire issues that people are aware of aside from those
fixed in the current patch set, please let me know so that I can be
prepared when I have to write and chair a report for my employer.

Many thanks, and WELL DONE the FreeBSD/Java porting team and
contributers, your work is appreciated more than you know.

Thanks again.

Ah, careful. It's not beta quality yet. It's alpha quality.

As long as you are sticking with back-end stuff such as the Servlets/JSP you
mention, I believe that the direst problems have been resolved. Patchset 9
will include some fixes for spawning processes from your JVM. I will switch
to our native port for compilation/back-end with the release of patchset 9,
although I will still use the Linux JDK to run my (Swing) front-end
application.

If your software is heavily threaded I would be scratching my head. I've
seen some problems in Swing that seem to point to thread deadlock, but it's
hard to put my finger on it. Some vague reports on the freebsd-java list
seem to point in the same direction, but no hard evidence has been provided.

On the other hand, it would be nice to be able write in your report: "even
the alpha stuff that comes out of the FreeBSD community is better than
Linux' production stuff".

*duck* joke guys. No flames, please. :)

Have you tried running your software with the port? Generally it's the
problems that are reported that get fixed (hint, hint). All the problems
that have been reported have been hard lockups or crashes. There don't seem
to be any subtle, creeping bugs. If your stuff runs out of the box, you're
probably going to be OK.

Just a quick hint for those people who are only using the Blackdown JDK
to bootstrap FreeBSD/JDK builds (and not for normal usage).

If you've already compiled and installed the FreeBSD JDK port and
compiled and installed a JIT, be sure to unset JAVA_COMPILER before
making a new version. I just got bitten by that one, because the
Blackdown JDK couldnt find OpenJIT. Took me a little while to discover
it, when the build reported my Linux JDK was not a valid JDK to build
with.

The problem comes around because the sanity check looks at the first
line outputted by '/usr/local/linux-jdk1.2.2/bin/java -version' in order
to check the version number. The correct output would usually be:

java version "1.2.2"
Classic VM (build Linux_JDK_1.2.2_RC4, green threads, nojit)#

or similar.

In my case, it was:

Warning: JIT compiler "OpenJIT" not found. Will use interpreter.
java version "1.2.2"
Classic VM (build Linux_JDK_1.2.2_RC4, green threads, nojit)

and the sanity check obviously found no version number in the first
line.

Just issuing an 'unset JAVA_COMPILER' before the build will do the
trick.

Just a quickie :)

Yup, sanityck could potentially be a little smarter about parsing the
output of java -version.

Thanks :).

I'm not personally running any sort of servlets, but the reports I've seen
on the list of using patchset 8 for this are favourable.

Hmmm, I can't think of any issues which are in the dire category, but there
are certainly some open bugs. There are also some fixed bugs which aren't
in the current patchset (external processes, deleting empty directories).

From what it sounds like you're doing, you'll probably be fine. But as
with all software in this stage of its life, give it a thorough test before
committing yourself to it :).

I do not see a 'gmake install' as part of the instructions on building
the JDK. But there *is* a 'gmake install' as part of the instructions
on building a JIT. (I followed the instructions for adding OpenJIT).

Specifically, the section headings that K.J. Koster uses under "Howto's"
are:

  1. Build the Port
          Install required ports,
          Create Work Directories,
          Download JDK source,
          Download patches,
          Unpack and Apply Patches,
          Create Build Script,
          Build,
          Install and Use <----- NOTE
  2. Install a JIT
  3. Build for FreeBSD 2.2.8

NOTE: There is no install step under "Install and Use". There would
appear to be three possibilities:
   1. The 'gmake release-images' within the build script that is run before
the "Install and Use" section also does an install,
   2. the 'gmake install' under "Install a JIT" also installs the JDK,
   3. the install step for the JDK is missing.

Well I have already followed the directions on K.J. Koster's website so my
release JDK is currently under my Home directory at:
$HOME/source-jdk1.2.2/work/build/FreeBSD/jdk-image-i386, and I have already
installed OpenJIT as per the directions.

So, do I have to do any 'deinstall's before coping the directory to
/usr/local/jdk1.2.2? Once I have copied the directory over, do I have to
(re-)install the JDK? (what should I use: gmake install? pkg_install?) do I
have to reinstall OpenJIT? etc.

On an earlier post to the mailing list (two or three weeks ago, I believe)
Greg Lewis responded to someone who was having trouble by saying that an IDE
(I think it was Forte) might need to have the *_g files available. Is this
true and would it mean that I should copy the ../FreeBSD/bin files (which
includes the *_g files) to /usr/local/jdk1.2.2/bin?

Thanks again.

John

Sorry, I thought you were talking about installing OpenJIT. To "install" the
jdk, follow the instructions in the BUILD-RELEASE file. In summary: do a
"gmake release-images" and copy the appropriate directory (probably
jdk-image-i386, unless you have specific needs) in /usr/local/jdk1.2.2.

For OpenJIT you could just rebuild it to avoid any troubles. The point
is to re-run configure, so that it finds the correct jdk directory,
in /usr/local, and then install it in the correct place.

Hmm, I'm having trouble when running Orion (a J2EE application server).
It seems to `hang' when deploying .ear files. I don't know in what
category this problem would fall, but it keeps me from completely
switching from the Blackdown 1.2.2 rc4 to the native FreeBSD JDK.

A problem that should be solved in patchset 9 is that Ant can not delete
directories.

I find that AWT applications are sometimes very slow. The Forte 1.0 CE
installer (InstallShield) is *very* slow. It takes ~ 10 seconds to draw
the first window.

So on one hand the native JDK is not very usable IMHO, but the Linux JDK
is in my experience very stable on both 3.4-STABLE and on 4.0-STABLE. So
I believe you can make the switch to the FreeBSD operating system, but I
recommend you use the Linux JDK for now (in the ports tree).

* Ant

* Forte

Hi:

At the Forte for Java download site there are formats for Solaris, Linux,
Windows, and class. The directions say that "other" unix's should use the
Solaris download (to use the .sh files).

I had thought that I would have to use the Linux format. Is it possible to
run Forte (and JBuilder or VisualAge) by using the Solaris formats under
FreeBSD? (what about using the .class files format?)

I'd be happy to hear from anyone with an opinion about Java IDE's or
instructions on how they got their IDE working, whether it was under Linux
emulation or native.

John

Use the class file for the install. You'll need to use the 1.2.2 patchset8
version of the native jdk. It does run under the linux emulated version, but
very slowly.

Folks-

Inclosed is a (long) stack trace. I was using Forte-ce editor... browsing

(Using forte_ce with Java1.2.2p8 on FBSD4.0-stable) Let me know what other
information you need.

Hi,

maybe this of some interest for us freebsdlers (especially the last line in

Just got back from the first day of JavaOne. I'm happy to say that Sun
sounds like they're fairly serious about Linux support. Lots of Linux
visibility at the conference, several talks and BOFs. The biggest news
I heard is that Java 1.4 ("Merlin") should be released simultaneously
on Windows, Solaris, and Linux. Yay! Pretty much all the standard J2SE
and J2EE stuff should be coming out for Linux, including Hotspot
(client & server), Java plug-in, etc.

The session name was BUS-1698, you may be able to find notes on the
JavaOne site at http://java.sun.com/javaone, or at
  http://jsp.java.sun.com/javaone/javaone2000/event.jsp?eventId=1698&trackId=1&eventType=BUS&ts=960339101588

Blake Connell, Calvin Austin, and Eileen Yang all spoke for awhile.
Blake is a product line manager, Calvin is the lead Linux port
engineer, and Eileen works on performance. (Hong Zhang was also on the
panel, he does Hotspot work).

Some technical tidbits:

J2EE 1.2.1 is also available for Linux
October 2000 should be the final J2SE 1.3 release.
Fourth quarter 2001 should be J2SE 1.4 release (simultaneous).
Linux 1.3 should include everything that's in the Solaris version.
Hotspot both server & client, I believe native threads too.
Sound API is currently OSS, they may move to ALSA.
1.4 should be better at Java2D, SMP, and Hotspot.
They're interested in better Linux desktop support. Motif gives them
trouble with non-Motif window managers. They test KDE + KWM mostly,
  but want to support everything.
Dual monitor support is forthcoming
There's a AWT on GTK port on the SCSL site, but they don't intend to
  do anything with it.
Java 3D API is forthcoming from Blackdown.
Performance is getting better, 1000% IO improvement in 1.3! Faster Swing, too.
No specific plans for embedded Linux support.
No plans to do SVGA or framebuffer versions of AWT.
x86 releases only for now.
A FreeBSD port is in the works! Not official yet.

Political tidbits:

Caldera is a Java source licensee and is doing their own ports.
Mandrake will distributed Java with next release.
Sun is working with LinuxCare for support on portability, optimization.
They have no plans to compromise on SCSL to be more GPL friendly.
Plenty of props and respect paid to Blackdown. An explicit apology
about the gaffe on Sun's first Java 1.2 release with Inprise. They
also indicated a continuing relationship with Blackdown,
  particularly for porting optional packages.
I asked "why did it take so long to support Linux?", the answer I got
  was "limited resources".
They are listening to people's feedback and bug reports, would like to
  hear more.

So, I tried to build jdk 1.2.2 like described in Kees' Webpage.
The problem I have is, that Linux' java don't wants relative
pathnames for the classpath.

So the build fails right here:

/usr/local/linux-jdk1.2.2/bin/java -classpath . InvokerGen <
../../../../src/share/javavm/include/invokers.txt > invokers.c
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: InvokerGen

linux-jdk-1.2.2 installed via ports (which is actually a jdk-1.2.2-RC4),
FreeBSD 4.0-STABLE

Looks like a wrong .java_wrapper, any ideas?

Have your tried the patch for executing external programs? Perhaps Orion
runs a shell script of some sort.

I've seen this too on my home box:

I thought it may be because I have a symlink in the path or something. I
have been hacking at it for a but, but only half heartedly, becasue you can
simply copy work/build/freebsd/java/jvm/*.class and
work/src/share/javavm/include/invokers.txt to /tmp, then invoke the
InvokerGen command line there, and finally move the generated .c file back
into the right position. The JDK build fine after that.

If you do a -verbose, you can see that InvokerGen.class does actually get
loaded.

Anyone knows what's wrong?

Thank you everyone for your replies yesterday. We're getting a new test
machine in the next few days or so, and I'll be heavily stress testing
our software, and possibly patching the JDK, so I might be posting a few
here and there. That should clean out a few cobwebs if they exist :)

Couple of quickies;

What patchset are we at now? i.e. on Kees' site
Do we have official word from Sun yet?

Thank ye :)

We're oficially at patchset 8. There are two fixes that are floating around,
one for deleting directories, and the other for exec-ing stuff. You may want
to add those when you build the JDK for your tests.

My site is still in patchset 7 mode. :-( That's where the cobwebs are. I
have no time this week to work on it, so I was going to wait until patchset
9 comes out.

Notably, the socket related issues (Resource Unavailable thingy) have been
resolved.

I've found the delete patch in the mailing list archives, but I cant
find the external execution patch anywhere - a few references to
problems with executing external programs, but not much else...

Is there one floating around?

Well, all I can say at this point is:

Example Apache JServ Servlet

Congratulations, ApacheJServ 1.1 is working!

No modifications required so far, the latest patchset (still minus the
delete and exec patches) seem to be working fine.

Nothing official, although I spent the evening with Sun and met the
Blackdown folks last night for cocktails as I broke free to spend one
afternoon at JavaOne.

More as official news is released....

The BSDi press release is (purposely?) vague. It doesn't seem like the kind
of news they want to shout about. BTW, how far from alpha is "controlled
beta"?

Looking forward to the news hinted at below..

Well, I don't know how far BSDi has advanced, but *our* port is alpha
quality until Greg says otherwise. Maybe BSDi has a different port
altogether? :-)

Hi:

I was (in part) commenting on the fact, noted earlier, that BSDi folks were
mum on any Java-BSD news the day before the announcement. My impression,
judging from their silence and the details (or lack thereof) in the press
release is that they haven't advanced much beyond where the FreeBSD-java
porting team is today.

Naturally, I'm happy that any vendor supports Java on *BSD, and as you point
out their port *may* be totally different, but that would seem to defy
common sense. Why didn't they just call it patchset 9 for consistency? ;)

John

I don't think there is much point in us speculating on the list about
exactly what the support from BSDi means. Lets just let the dust settle
and see what it is we've gotten. I'm sure Nate will update as he is able :).

Well, that trick helped, but not much. The build failed just some
seconds later.
Now I moved that directory some levels up and everything builds
fine. Strange.

(from /usr/home/runge to /usr/java, which are on different disks/mounts,
I guess, thats the problem.)

Begins to sound like the Linux JDK has a maximum path length somewhere
that's tripped by deep directory trees.

Hope that our port won't have this problem.

Really? That's suprising, since the announcement was made. However, as
I understand things, the techie's and management haven't had time to get
their stories straight yet, since things have been happening fast and
furious.

What details can I state that would help out? So far, there is a lot of
'concern' and 'interest' in making a *BSD port happen from Sun, and BSDi
has stepped up to be the 'point of contact' for this to happen
(actually, Sun needed a legal entity to sign the license and such, and
it was easier to 'legally' work with BSDi than a bunch of volunteers, or
so I've been told).

So, the balls is basically in BSDi's court at this point, and I don't
expect to hear anything back until *after* JavaOne, when the folks at
BSDi can get together again.

However, I've got calls in all over the place. :)

Nate

Thanks for the update, it makes what's going on much more intelligible.

This sounds like potentially the same licensing/business model that was used
with Inprise for the Linux port. If I recall correctly, at that time Sun
also spoke of a need for a legal entity.

Thankfully, BSDi's press release is only 1/2 the story: it is augmented by
discussions for an "official" port, and that is certainly good news :)
Apparently there is not yet any contractual arrangement between Sun and
BSDi, :( which explains some of the vagueness of the BSDi press release.

Looking forward to more info ...

Exactly.

That may be. As I understand things, the arrangement might be in place,
or it may still be in the works. However, it should be more clear next
week, or so the story goes.

Hello people,

I've cc'd this to Jordan, because I believe he's closest to BSDi.

First off, I'm really happy that we've gotten this far with Sun. I'm happy
that BSDi is lending a hand.

Someone on the freebsd-alpha list expressed concern about the position of
the "other BSDs" (for want of a better word). I'm a little curious how they
fit in.

The way I see it, once we've got Sun's backing it will be easier for them to
get it too. Sun will have gone through the motions several times by then,
and may even have found that it's not all that painful. Also, they will have
a BSD specific patchset to work from, instead of a Solaris/Linux one.

On the other hand, perhaps we are in the position now to save them a lot of
frustration. There's interest in Java on the other BSDs too, of course.
Personally, I think it would be good for the quality of the patches if we
have a more homogenous OS group that they work on.

Perhaps we could negotiate a more open BSD license for the JDK, allowing
other BSDs in too, maybe based on the fact that we share a common ancestry.
This will save Sun quite some time in the future, because they don't have to
do the dance for each BSD individually. Another pro is that there would be a
single entity controlling the BSD ports, and possibly a single code base
too. This could reduce fragmentation over the BSDs, and it would improve the
quality of each individual port.

    Kees Jan

PS. "really happy" does not quite cover it.

and (people tend to forget this) the effect
 they have on others.

Finally I succeeded compiling "my own" jdk 1.2.2 and I have to say,
that I'm really surprised!
I just checked some applications I made for my recent project,
which make quite a lot stuff with Swing, threads and CORBA and
everythin worked. There are only some problems with fonts

(Font specified in font.properties not found
[-*-*-medium-r-normal-*-*-%d-*-*-p-*-adobe-fontspecific])

and thus the layout looks a little bit different.

I even checked suns new Java Webstart, which seems to work
quite fine.

But one thing makes me thoughtfully. It seems, that our native
port without JIT is faster then the linux port with JIT, at
least within Swing based applications.
How can that be?

Hi,

      I am using FreeBsd 3.4 with jdk 1.1.8 green threads on i386 . I
am getting Segmentation violation from JNI call as reported in PR
12286.
Program is crashing when I try to create a new Java object
using JNI NewObject function. Problem report still says that bug is
open. The PR is included in the end of this mail.

Any one of you know the solution for this problem or have a patch for
this problem.

That is actually normal. We've found that the JIT tends to be heavy GUI
applications slower than w/out a JIT, due to the increase in size for
the JIT'd code and larger runtime issues, which blow the cache.

This is probably due to cockpit error.

If you've done this, then the program won't work. pthread_mutex_lock
and friends aren't compatible with the threading using the JDK1.1 VM.

The bug is almost certainly in your JNI code that is doing something
'wrong', although it's not necessarily your fault, since doing JNI isn't
documented, and is (as expected) different for each platform, FreeBSD
being no exception.
