Quick question,

Is there an ongoing effort to provide an actual 'Port' for the FreeBSD
JDK? If not, I'd like to make a start on one...

What's wrong with /usr/ports/java/jdk?

Cliff,

What version are you referring to ? There is a production-quality
JDK 1.1 available, and there is a beta-quality JDK 1.2, and there is a
almost-production-quality Linux JDK 1.2 (Blackdown RC4).

Read these for more info:

* http://www.freebsd.org/java/dists/12.html

The responses to Cliff Rowley's question are somewhat disappointing. Cliff
has posted many times to this list (I counted 7 in June). Even if you
didn't know that, and even if you didn't know that the content of at least
_some_ of his postings concerned JDK 1.2.2, wouldn't it logically make sense
that he is referring to JDK1.2.2? JDK1.1.8 and the Blackdown 1.2.2 are
already ports!

Also, did I miss an announcement? Was patchset 9 declared 'beta', or has
patchset 10 been released? (as beta? if so, I need to update from 9).

I haven't seen many complaints about patchset 9 as alpha/beta, and a 'port'
would entice more testers, so I think that Cliff's question makes sense.

John

No offense to Cliff, but I get 500 msgs/day, so remembering that Cliff
posted 7 times in June means nothing to me.

Having spent close to 8 years doing FreeBSD work, I don't assume much of
anything anymore. It saves alot of time and email traffic. :)

Not that I'm aware of. I'm trying to get some more source code for Greg
and the rest of the gang, and my house-moving project seems to have
gotten in the way. :(

Yes, I have some ambitions in this area :). I'd hoped to resolve this
faster, but things haven't quite worked out that way so far. To do a
source code based JDK 1.2.2 port you need to do something similar to the
WordPerfect port where you require people to download the source code
and patches manually (thus complying with the SCSL) and then have the
build commence from there.

Its the compliance with the SCSL I'm trying to nail down 100% at the moment
since there is no way I want to be submitting a port for inclusion in
FreeBSD that potentially leaves them open to any legal ramifications.

A binary port is an entirely different kettle of fish since it involves
getting permission from Sun, etc.

That would be a "No" on both counts :).

The main issue with patchset 9 was the i18n business which has hopefully
been sorted out with major help from the Japanese FreeBSD Java users
(arigato!). This will naturally appear in patchset 10 as will some work
on fixing up the Java Sound implementation from Rob Furphy. I agree that
a source code based port would be useful at this point (see my previous
posting).

Wow,

Thanks to the instructions on the www.freebsd.org/java page
I am able to run JBuilder35 on a native JDK1.2.2 with the TYA JIT
(built as per http://web.inter.nl.net/users/kjkoster/java/index.html).

I also tried ShuJIT and OpenJIT as per the instructions above, and
while they worked ok for java -version, neither would allow JBuilder
to run properly --

When trying the ShuJit port (after modifying the Makefile to point to
jdk1.2.2) I got the following error with JBuilder35 and just a blank
screen:

Interesting. So things work with TYA, do they also work without any JIT
whatsoever? The problems look like they may be with the respective JIT's
rather than the JDK port, but I could be wrong.

I should have mentioned - aside from running a bit slower, JBuilder
also seems to work fine with no JIT at all. {Using FreeBSD-4 7/8 Snap,
PIII-450/256M ram}

With no JIT, accessing the file menu can be slow in that it may not
completely paint right away (haven't noticed this with tya).

Also, when trying to use servlet-runner to debug a servlet I get errors
about not being able to initialize a connection using jpda. I don't
belive the nt version uses jpda by default with servlet runner - aside
from downloading jpda from sun, I haven't tried to diagnose it further
yet. But I can just right click and run the servlet.

Looking forward to trying it out with Enhydra next!

Look at question 5 in the FAQ supplied with patchset 9.

Dear FreeBSD'ers,

out of curiosity, a few days ago I decided to try the JRE port on a=20
3.5-S system of mine, and to see if it worked with=20
linux-netscape-communicator-4.73: I specified=20
/usr/local/jre1.1.8/bin/java %s in=20
Edit/Preferences/Navigator/Applications.=20

BTW, I went to www.real.com/player/7/ to download the linux player v7,=20
but, on clicking on the download form link, I got the error: "Class=20
not found: /tmp/MO396B752D0380172.com". The verbose flag for java lets=20
me see that other classes are loaded; however, I cannot access that=20
download page. I searched the -java and -questions archives, but I=20
can't seem to find any useful hints.=20

I am probably missing something very basic here.

Needless to say, I am downloading the linux player via a plain old=20
**text** browser (please don't laugh). But I would like to learn how=20
to make this java thing work properly :-)

Many thanks in advance,
Salvo

In trying to get JPDA to work with JBuilder using the
native JDK1.2.2 (P9), I copied the jpda.jar and dt.jar files from the
linux_jdk1.2.2/lib directory into the
jdk1.2.2/lib directory.

But when I tried to use it, i.e.

java -Xdebug -Xnoagent -Djava.compiler=NONE
   -Xrunjdwp:transport=dt_socket,address=9123,suspend=n
     HelloWorld

I get:

Can't load "libjdwp.so", because Shared object "libjdwp.so" not found
Could not create the Java virtual machine.

Ok, so I copied libjdwp.so from the linux-jdk1.2.2 directory as well.

Next it was libdl.so (finally discovered that this is part
of glib) so I installed linux_devtools-6.1

Still having difficulty - for some reason libdl.so would
still not get loaded {even though I added /lib to
/compat/linux/etc/ld.so.conf and rebooted}

Going for brute force now, I manually copied each linux lib asked for
into jdk1.2.2/jre/lib/i386/ directory until I got to ld-linux.so.2 at
which point the above gives me
a bus error...

I am using FreeBSD4.0 (7/8Snap) and XFree86 4.0 and the
instructions from
http://web.inter.nl.net/users/kjkoster/java/index.html
and Greg's FAQ.

Any enlightenment would be greatly appreciated.

PS. To my suprise, JBuilder will run with the linux_jdk
and linux javacomp jit {but it is slower than the native
jdk with no jit}. And while I can run HelloWorld from
the prompt as above with linux-jdk, I can't do it in JBuilder yet
perhaps because it is using address=asimov.solaria.org:9123 and
asimov.solaria.org isn't in my local dns yet.

PS2: Enhydra4 Enterprise seems to work great with native
jdk1.2.2 so far.

Thanks in advance,

David Holland

That won't work -- the FreeBSD native JDK can't use Linux shared libraries.
The information in the FAQ for this particular question was only put there
based on what folk on freebsd-java had said worked for them, I haven't
actually tried to use JBuilder myself :(.

See above. You might try creating some "blank" shared libraries and giving
them the appropriate names -- this may or may not work depending on how
much the native libraries are used.

Maybe the other folk who are actually using JBuilder have some better
suggestions?

It shouldn't surprise you that you can run things using the Linux JDK
under emulation. The speed difference is a bit surprising though.

This *fix* is for making the "JBuilder App" work correctly. The errors
it corrects are java classes which jbuilder needs. This *fix* does not
fix what you appear to have.

Without the jpda.jar file in the correct place JBuilder should still
"come up"
but the menus (and other things) don't function properly.

I just re-checked this on my machine and JBuilder works fine.
FreeBSD RELEASE 3.5 vanilla install with linux emul.

I think your 'problem' may be the specific invocation of "libjdwp.so".
Searching my java release directories I find this library in the Linux
port but not in my "Patchset 9 Native" JDK. What is the runjdwp for?

The -Xrunjdwp argument sets up a connection that I can
attach to from inside of jbuilder to debug the application
either locally or on a different machine (using JPDA). On
NT this works great for debuging Servlets and EJBs inside of BEA's
Application Server.

When you run JBuilder on 3.5 with linux emulation, and you type a
class: i.e. System.

Does the popup class browser show correctly for you?

For me with both the linux-jdk and native, I do get an
undecorated window, but it appears under JBuilder instead
of on top of it - and it seems to have a redraw problem
in that I don't notice content painting until I close it
with escape. This seems to be independant of window
manager, i.e. twm, windowmaker, and sawmill.

When you pull up the file menu, does it seem to have a
redraw problem? (mine does with linux-jdk and native with
out tya jit).

I don't yet understand how to build using openmotif instead of lesstif -
since the ALT_MOTIF_DIR variable in the buildscript points to the same
directory for both -
uninstall lesstif?

YES. I have just now reconfirmed this (to be absolutely sure).

I'm not having these problems. On either JDK. With or without JIT(s).
You seem to have a system and not necessarily JDK or JBuilder problem.
What it would be I don't know.

I built with lesstif 0.91.0 as I had it already installed.

Quite. Particularly since I have seen repaint problems with one of my own
applications too. Have a look at

  http://erlecom.nl.eu.org/~dutchman/index.html

Click on "WSIM Client Application" and follow instructions (basically,
download iWSIM.zip, unzip it and java -jar iWSIM.jar)

In order to run it under the FreeBSD port (patchset 9, FreeBSD 4.0), I have
to resize the window to force repaints. The application responds when I
blindly take a stab at where the buttons and menues are supposed to be, so
it is alive in a sense.

There are other paint problems reported by FreeBSD 4.0 users, so my wild
guess is that it's something with the XFree86 version. I'm away from my
home, so I cannot give version numbers.

PS. Haven't had much time for the JDK port. Sorry about that. *sigh*

Ok, with a bit more research...

With the official Solaris releases:
jpda.jar, libjdwp.so, dt.jar and libdt_socket.so are all part of JDK 1.3,
but are _not_ part of JDK 1.2.2. And, in particular, they are not part of
the JDK 1.2.2 source code we currently have access to under the SCSL.

Now, the Blackdown folk, who have access to the JDK 1.3 source code, have
obviously included these libraries and jars into the Linux JDK they have
released.

I've just sucked down the JDK 1.3 Beta source which is available under
the SCSL, and (after a _very_ brief look) it appears as though it may
include the appropriate code for building the necessary thingies. We might
be able to graft this code into the FreeBSD native JDK but I'll need to
have a better look at this when I have time to be sure.

A couple weeks ago I install jdk-1.1.8 from ports and it all works fine. A
couple days ago I'm doing some drivecleaning and I pkg_delete my jdk-1.1.8.
I go back into /usr/ports and install it again. No problem. Except now
things don't work so well:

I have no idea why this is happening. The only system changes have been a

I'm assuming you have the 3.x compatibility package installed? If so, then
the obvious place to look is in the changed system. From memory, there
have been changes to the dynamic linker recently. That would be the first
thing I'd try reverting to see if you can narrow down the problem.

Hmm. If you allow me to make another wild guess then I'd say this is a
threading issue. The repaint thread may be starving. What was changed in
thread support between 3.5 and 4.0?

Folks-
I was wondering if people were looking at native threads support in
the Java 1.2.2 port. What are the current problem associated with native
thread support.

Not a lot from memory. If we can confirm that it is a 3.x vs. 4.x issue
then that should make it possible to track down by comparing execution on
the two different versions of FreeBSD.

Since FreeBSD has no kernel threads available 'out of the box', there
are no advantages to the existing threads package over the internal
green threads implementation. Green threads are optimized for the JDK,
so are more effecient.
