I understood your answer to the question : is it supposed to be so or not? (yes) to
mean it is supposed
to be built. With that in context, my question, will it be corrected any time soon?
is asking will
the build be corrected to compile the shared library of gcc.

Also I noticed, it is compiling the *.So object files, just not building the
libgcc.so shared library
when it is finished compiling the object files.

anyways, I am unable to fully test the Java2Demo.jar file, at least the sound part
because it can not
find the __get_eh_context symbol.

Hello,

I did aglobal find and the only shared libgcc I found was in the
/usr/lib/compat directory. I do not think this is the shared library
you are talking about.

If I need to submit a PR, then >man send-pr here I come.
I thought since this seems to be a known problem, (it was this mailing list
who explained it to me) that someone was already looking into it.

anyways, let me know to proceed and I will.

libgcc is *NOT* supposed to be built shared. However, as you point out,
the binaries created by gcc are dependant upon these routines, so they
should be linked into the final executable.

IMO, the problem is in the linker not pulling these routines into the
'driver' binaries, but I don't know how to fix that.

In short, this isn't a JDK problem per-se, but a build-tool problem.

Ok, ldd /usr/local/jdk1.2.2/bin/i386/green_threads/java will tell
you which libgcc.so it uses. If it doesn't tell abount libgcc --
it is linked in static then, and your problem is bit different
from mine.

Right. libgcc.a is supposed to be linked in automatically. That is,
without -lgcc given to linker.

The problem is that our port _has_ -lgcc flag
(see e.g. build/freebsd/java/java/GNUmakefile).

My guess is that this causes incorrect dynamic leftover libgcc
being linked in (dynamic libraries are looked at first).

Hello all,

I added -lgcc to line 54 (see below) to ./build/freebsd/sun/audio/GNUmakefile,
recompiled, installed,
and started the Java2Demo.jar, went to MIX tab and yippee, I had sound. Now not all the
different sounds
worked, but most did, I am very pleased.

Is this the only place it crashes? Meaning: Does it run correctly
everywhere else?

If it dies everywhere, you may want to rebuild it from scratch (I have
accidentally tried to use a shuJIT compiled against 1.1.8 on 1.2.2, and
it didn't work...surprise, surprise.)

Directions are availible on:

hello world example works fine
I've got some other strange errors when I try to run more complex
applications (e.g. examples/WithResource/BankServer from JavaORB
CosOTS distribution)

everything works fine without shujit

hi, there!

with attached patches it is possible to build /usr/ports/java/tya
with jdk12-beta
(you will also need to change JAVADIR= in Makefile)
I have verified that it is still possible to build tya with jdk1.1.8
with this patches.

tya works for me with jdk12-beta

/fjoe

The main problem with using JITs with JDK12 is that virtual machine doesn't anymore
allow installing JIT into place other than ${LOCALBASE}/jdk1.2.2 (i.e. it doesn't
respect LD_LIBRARY_PATH like 1.1.8 does), so it's nearly impossible to adjust port to
correctly install/deinstall on both jdk/jre 1.1.8 and jdk 1.2.2. However if you have
any ideas of how to cope with this particular problem please let me know.

Why not always place a link into $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/i386/ for the shared
library of the JIT. It shouldn't hurt anything for 1.1.8 and it makes 1.2.2
work.

will this prevent normal pkg_delete of jdk12?

Yes, it probably would - as TYA or shuJIT would still be installed.
However, that is a dependency issue. If you remove the JIT first, there
will not be any problems.

we can install shujit/tya into ${JAVA_HOME}/jre/lib/${ARCH}
directly with the same effect.
or there exist some other issues why we cannot do this?

Hi!

I recently submitted a PR for a new port (Enhydra 3.1 beta application server),
and am about to do some more work in this area. Enhydra requires (well, almost)
a JDK v. 1.2; lot of other stuff also requires specific JDK's. At this moment
we have different JDK versions in the ports (and I gather IBM 1.3 support is
upcoming), with options wrt to JIT, compilers, etc. all installing in
different places.
This would make it very hard to require a particular version in a port. I had a
look at javawmwrapper, but it doesn't look very useful, that is, feature
complete.

What I'd like to see is some kind of software, like apxs for Apache or
glib12-config, which could be called upon in a port's Makefile to determine
(at least):

 - whether there is at least one JDK of required version installed
 - the path to the compiler
 - the path to jre
 - maybe even options to pass

Note that probably most of this stuff could be solved by appropriate symlinks
(for my setup, /usr/local/jdk1.2 -> /usr/local/linux-jdk1.2.2 would suffice),
but I would be uncomfortable with updating such symlinks at port installation.
Instead, each port which installs a new compiler / jre could just update some
sort of repository (a file in /etc/jdk, for instance) to let the wrapper know
it is there. It would still be the user responsibility to determine which one
to use in case there are multiple equivalent.

Please comment. If people are interested, I would probably get down and define
requirements to send for comments again, and then I should also have time to
actually implement this.

Bye,
	Andrea

I am about to start porting Cocoon and Jetspeed to FreeBSD. Anybody working on
that?

Also, any comment on my port of Enhydra 3.1 beta 1 (PR ports/22421)?

Bye,
	Andrea

I've not heard of anyone porting those over, but they shouldn't be too
tough.

And given the upcoming release of FreeBSD 4.2, there are lots of people
pouring over the PR database adding stuff. I'll take a look at your PR
tonight if it's not committed before then.

Patrick

Cocoon is already ported by kuriyama-san. See textproc/cocoon.

This mail message was not automatically generated by our Stupid2000 release
of Dumbscan which did not find any virus infected files in the (0) or more
attached file(s) in this message(s) in this/these posting(s). As such it seems
to be an exceptional condition and we are choosing to respond to everyone and
their dog to notify them of this rare occurence for this list.

Should any other actual highly rare human generated messages be detected
on this otherwise mail robot dominated list, our software will definitely
notify you of this extraordinary occurence and deliver a novel form of list
managed DoS through automated replies and thereby guarantee that your
supply of highly repetitive robot messages is not put in jeopardy.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled robots...

After upgrade to 4.2 stable the jdk stopped working i get this error:
./java
Can't load library "/usr/local/linux-jdk1.2.2/jre/lib/i386/libjava.so",
because /usr/local/linux-jdk1.2.2/jre/lib/i386/libjava.so: cannot open
shared object file: Too many open files
Could not create the Java virtual machine.

jdk1.1.8 is still working normally, even if i kill all processes arround i
still get open files error. I can open many more apaches after that, and
other programs, so i think the error comes from either jdk itself (1%
because it worked fine before upgrade) or from linux_base(1% since its also
worked fine) or form the way 4.2 handles linux module (98% ?).
Has anyone else expirience same problem? Any suggestions on work around? I
have tried already to increase maxfiles with sysctl, that didnt help.
According to all statistics i have lots of resources free.

Did you do a clean install, or did you upgrade? If you upgraded, did you
rebuild /usr/ports/emu*/linux_base?

Neither, probably.

You might want to run df -I and see if you are using all of your
inodes. If
you are not using all of your inodes then you may want to increase the
MAXUSERS in your kernel config and recompile the kernel.

Or also try:

/sbin/sysctl kern.maxfiles

My suspicion is that something with the recent crt* handling is causing
the JDK to keep re-opening a file recursively (failure or something).

I upgraded, and rebuilt already linuxbase stuff. Didnt help. I am rebuilding
kernel now with higher maxusers value, but i doubt it will help.I can run X
and netscape with staroffice at same time - no problem. Is there maybe
special setting specifically for linux_base/module how many files to open?

How the change in FreeBSD startup files (which are linked in statically
at the executable module creation time) can possibly affect Linux
binaries? If anything, I'd suspect recent Linuxulator changes in -STABLE.

Maybe... Startup is done a bit differently, and I'm not completely
familiar with how the linuxulator 'emulates' certain code.

Do you have the Blackdown Linux 1.2.2 JDK installed and is it installed in
the standard place?

yes i had it installed. i figured since the jdk1.2.2-beta still uses linux
stuff, i will be better of removing all linux and other packages and
installing from scratch again, may be it will fix my open file problem.
so i am in the process of reinstalling everything now.

damn 4.2 ;))

ok i figured why i cant build jdk-1.2.2beta all comes back to my infamous
"too many open files" error
when sanity check tries to get : v="`$j -version 2>&1`"
it of course gets Can't load library
"/usr/local/linux-jdk1.2.2/jre/lib/i386/libjava.so", because
/usr/local/linux-jdk1.2.2/jre/lib/i386/libjava.so: cannot open shared object
file: Too many open files Could not create the Java virtual machine.
turning sanity off doesnt help, it just fails a little bit later with same
error.

i guess i have to consider to roll back to 4.1.1
but if anyone has any suggestions they are welcomed.

Guys! (and Gals ;)
Yesterday night i cvsuped again and noticed bunch of changes in linux mudule
files. "build everything" solved my open files problem and all jdk problems.
Thx a lot to everyone who helped me. Sorry for taking your time on a issue
to really connected to jdk itself.
