The first project is a graphical installation utility for FreeBSD in order to make things easier for newbies. The second projects is a configuration utility similar to Linuxconf in Redhat (although probably with a different interface) that allows users to administer most aspects of a FreeBSD system from a GUI front end. Once again, I hope that such a tool will make FreeBSD more attractive to new users. Currently, I don't know much about existing projects except that Will told me their are projects for both QT and TCL/TK front ends for sysinstall. If someone could contact me regarding these projects, and how I can get involved in one or both, I would appreciate it. Thank you, Mike. Very simple. Must be extended later. fetch(3) can be easily extended to HTTP and such. I've used #ifdef, so we can keep the setup utility small and the use simple. One must then only load _one_ floppy, e.g. FTP floppy, HTTP floppy, NFS floppy, etc etc, or CD-ROM. the determination is made in get_interpreter() and get_scripts(). With this, I've split the setup into three main-streams: a) make a boot-floppy, boot it with bin/setup/setup as init and mount stuff, setup networking etc etc. b) extend retrieving of files, depending on installation method chosen. Also means to have X11R6 started, if one uses CD-ROM installation. c) the setup TCL scripts that install the stuff. OK. Then I'll remove the #ifdefs later on and the whole thing is put on two floppies or something. However, that doesn't change the behaviour that setup's first step is to transfer the tclh interpreter & scripts. Or what do you think? I myself HATE it to download three floppies or more, if I could also download one floppy and setup downloads the binaries it uses itself. Did you ever have broken floppies? I always happen to have the second floppy broken, so I've already started the installation and then had to reboot to use a new floppy :) Worst case was the OS/2 installation back some years, where you had to use 4-5 boot-floppies for hte CDROM-install and it took me 2 hours until I got 5 non-broken floppies :)) > BTW, if you can sneak in OpenBSD's naming convention of disk1of2, > disk2of2, I'd like that. :-) ok > /me hopes jkh isn't subscribed to libh heh :) Alex -- cat: /home/alex/.sig: No such file or directory To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-libh" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-libh Fri Jun 23 5: 0:44 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-libh@freebsd.org Received: from mail.surf1.de (mail.surf1.de [194.25.165.21]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D151237C349 for ; Fri, 23 Jun 2000 05:00:40 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from alex@big.endian.de) Received: from neutron.cichlids.com (p3E9C112A.dip0.t-ipconnect.de [62.156.17.42]) by mail.surf1.de (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id OAA03170 for ; Fri, 23 Jun 2000 14:00:06 +0200 Received: from cichlids.cichlids.com (cichlids.cichlids.com [192.168.0.10]) by neutron.cichlids.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1F641AC27 for ; Fri, 23 Jun 2000 14:00:48 +0200 (CEST) Received: by cichlids.cichlids.com (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 84F3A14AB2; Fri, 23 Jun 2000 14:00:32 +0200 (CEST) Date: Fri, 23 Jun 2000 14:00:32 +0200 From: Alexander Langer To: libh@freebsd.org Subject: setup Message-ID: <20000623140032.A9457@cichlids.cichlids.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 1.0.1i X-PGP-Fingerprint: 44 28 CA 4C 46 5B D3 A8 A8 E3 BA F3 4E 60 7D 7F X-PGP-at: finger alex@big.endian.de X-Verwirrung: Dieser Header dient der allgemeinen Verwirrung. Sender: owner-freebsd-libh@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG We came to the following conclusion: * two or three boot disks * tclh + all scripts on this floppies * no dynamical fetching I myself would have prepared to let setup check for new install-scripts on ftp.freebsd.org, e.g. that remove bugs, but everyone said, one should download new floppies in that case. Well, that removes some neat possiblities, e.g. downloading additional files. Remember XF 3.3.6, that missed a lib for 4.0? In my eyes, one with a network connection could have done the following: * tclh is started from the boot-floppy * setup.tcl checks for new .tcl scripts, if a network connection is given (even for CDROM-isntalls!) * a new X-install script is found, which is executed in spite of the one on the CD. All other scripts are taken from the CD. This script's latest step is the retrieve the missing lib from ftp.freebsd.org and complete the installation. This is a way nice way of bug-fixing, which can't be done by just downloading new floppies.... This procedure I don't have a problem with. It's retrieving tclh I have a problem with. First, it's slow.
