I think I'll undertake the conversion of rc.firewall to include support for ipfilter too, before I send a patch. I mean, ten lines or so of changes to /etc/defaults/rc.conf and /etc/rc.network are not worth an entire commit by themselves. -- Giorgos Keramidas, < keramida @ ceid . upatras . gr > "Don't let your schooling interfere with your education." In the case of sendmail, it's probably best just to upgrade to something more trustworthy. I've heard way too many horror stories regarding sendmail... You should probably drop sendmail and install another MTA (Message Transfer Agent) like Exim. On my system I've actually removed sendmail, and made a symbolic link to the Exim executable in order to have it use Exim instead. The setup shouldn't be too difficult for Exim, there's lots of good info out there on the net, or you can just mail someone if you get stuck. As far as DNS goes, keep up to date on the latest version "bind-8.2.2.p5" and you'll have no trouble with security, and if you need help setting it up, I recommend O'Reilly's "DNS and Bind". I think the 3rd edition is the latest one. I would simply give you an internet address to use for information on DNS, but if you plan to run a name server, it's pretty damned important that you have a solid reference. If you make mistakes running a name server, you can cause unwanted data transfers over the internet - and that's BAD. Besides, DNS is really neat once you know how it works, and it's good if you need something to help you sleep. :) If anything is unclear, just send me a note! -David Fuchs beastie@beastie.net ----- Original Message ----- From: Martin To: Sent: Wednesday, January 19, 2000 11:27 PM Subject: DNS and SendMail > Greetings, > > Does anyone know where to find about security holes and configuring DNS > ? With the risk of being shot on this list, at the moment I find myself more at ease with Linux, but FreeBSD has proven to be much more stable and a lot more secure (as far as I can tell). As soon as I can get better with it, I will probably migrate completely to it. Anyway, I am new. I am running a small network, and I decided to install FreeBSD 3.2 on a vacant P66 with an 800MB HD and 36 MB of RAM, mostly to run it as my mail server, and with the excuse learn both about Sendmail (yes I hear that there are better, but I'd like to try it out and put my Sendmail book by OReilly to use when I can't sleep). My network is not connected to the internet as of yet, it is just several machines hooked together via TP and a hub, and eventually I'll plop a modem into my gateway. For now I am happy like this, as I am learning plenty despite the steep curve. Enough ranting: can someone give me a brief suggestion that a new user should be aware of? Anything will be helpful. I just started reading the posts on this list and I must say, they have been really good for someone like me that is starting from scratch. And I am also slowly going through the FreeBSD website, checking their documentation and stuff. Thanks. It will help you in plain english with the kind of troubles you will run into and give you a good overview of any tricks you will consider trying. In addendum to what David has said here, I would like to note that while the lists are full of fantastic advice from great folks willing to help, one should learn how to answer questions alone and only when you can document what you are doing that does not work turn to the lists for support. A post from a couple of days ago to the freebsd-questions list outlined some of the proper usage for freebsd-questions that i've pasted onto the bottom of this message. Don't be afraid to ask questions, but remember that in the long run learning how to find and finding the answer yourself will be far better than simply being told what to do. If you've already got some O'Reilly books you're on the right track! And just because it can't be said too many times, and just because it will answer probably 97% of the questions on the newbies list, SEARCH THE ARCHIVES OF THE MAILING LISTS for answers to your questions BEFORE asking them on the list. Besides, the response time is far greater ;) Welcome to the family, --gill On Wed, 19 Jan 2000, David Fuchs wrote: ->:) Looking for stuff that newbies should be aware of? Comments are, as always, appreciated.] - Have you bothered to check the Handbook and FAQ or the archives to see if we didn't answer your question already? And if this never made the FAQ or Handbook, why haven't you mailed freebsd-doc@freebsd.org about this with what should be added? - Have you tried ``man '' or ``apropos '' and see if there is a manpage about what you seek? - Use proper netiquette, this means snipping/removing irrelevant parts of the mail you are replying to, not only will the text be more correlated, but it will also save annoyance and bandwidth. - Use dots, commas, capitals and parapgraphs in your mail, not only does it look better and more readable, people might actually read and reply to your mail. - Please use english only on this list, for people unsure about their english, feel free to try your best at english, I am sure we get to what you want to know sooner or later, or check http://www.freebsd.org/support.html#mailing-list to see if your favorite language has its own mailinglist. - People struggling with english will not be flamed for their trying to use english. You weren't that great at first too when you learned for the first time. - Take flaming to private mail. - Politely explain majordomo to people who send their majordomo messages to the list and don't include the list on reply. - When reporting problems, have you considered that: - /var/log/messages exist for first help in troubleshooting? - uname -a a valuable tool is for people trying to help. - people are not psychic, hence dmesg, pnpinfo, pciconf, tcpdump or other diagnostic tools output are necessary. - including the actual error message might help people diagnose your problem? - specifying the version of the programs involved also helps troubleshooting? - the steps you used to come across the problem are necessary to reproduce the error. - mailing the list with your results will benefit other people struggling with the same problem and might help our documentation team to appropriately update the handbook and FAQ. - ``me too's'' are accepted when they get substantiated with your local information and results. - Try to trim cc: lists. - Do not crosspost unless you're sure. - FreeBSD doesn't evolve around you, it evolves around the community. - When asking comparisons between FreeBSD and OS X, Y or Z, please search the mailinglist archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search/search.html#mailinglists for them. Advocacy and Questions will yield too many hits for you to even consider asking this question again on the mailinglist(s). Oh, but you can use the cvsup'ed sources to build sysinstall if that's your intention. But I seem to prefer fdisk(8) after the installation is completed. Once you've done that, run the command "ps -aux" to display all running processes and find the process called "inetd" from the list. On the same row as that process you'll see it's PID (Process ID), all you need to do is restart that process so that it takes the new inetd.conf configuration into effect. To do that you simply do the "ps -aux" command and look for any processes called "telnetd". If you see any, it means someone is logged in using telnet. You can either kill these processes individually "kill -5 ", or you can kill all of them with "killall telnetd". If you're curious about that 5 in the command "kill -5 ", it's simply a number that designates the priority of the kill command (ie, how bad do you want that process DEAD?? Would you be willing to let it finish writing it's files? Or do you want it GONE right now??). Here are the most common numbers you would use: 1 HUP (hang up) 2 INT (interrupt) 3 QUIT (quit) 6 ABRT (abort) 9 KILL (non-catchable, non-ignorable kill) 14 ALRM (alarm clock) 15 TERM (software termination signal) So the higher the number, the faster the program will be shut down at a higher risk to damaging files that the program may be writing to. So be careful! I usually use kill -5 because it lets the program finish what it's doing before it quits. If you use anything lower sometimes the program will just ignore you. -David Fuchs ----- Original Message ----- From: David Fuchs To: Leandro Asnaghi-Nicastro ; Cc: Sent: Thursday, January 20, 2000 10:06 AM Subject: Re: [Q] account admin > Leandro is right, use /etc/inetd.conf and put a # mark in front of your > telnet service. It is also available at http://www.welearn.com.au/freebsd/newbies/) FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "subscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message.
