(avoiding misunderstandings....) Rafael: I should first recommend that some of the members in this list will not feel very comfortable if you write your inquiries in another language different than english. I you are going to address someone in this list do it in the english language. If you really need information about package installation or any other topic about freebsd I suggest you visit the freebsd site at www.freebsd.org and look for the mailing lists. Under there you can throughly search the questions mailing list and very others by pressing the option "search". Also you will find there the spanish mailing list and also a section on FAQ in spanish. If still you do not find what you are looking for address the freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG mailing list ( use the english language) and I am absolutely sure your questions will be answered and your doubts will b clarified 98% of the time. (The other 2% comes from how much time you spend on reading the Handbooks, tutorials and FAQs in the site above mentioned). This list is for less tecnical issues and more concerned with experiences users have had with the Freebsd and other related topics. All of us in this list are more than willing to help you solve the problems you might have, but some of the solution we offer (since this is not a technical list) might not be appropiate if you have not read the already mentioned sources of information. I hope this recommendations will be of some help to you achive some level of understanding, so you can obtain the maximum benefit form this fabulous operating system. Greetings Simon --- "Dra. I don't plan on writing replies to this mailing list in other languages. But I'm suggesting that english-speaking-only people on this mailing list shouldn't be discouged from helping someone due to language barriers. I was simply offering a simple method of helping people that don't write or understand english. Often times It seems as if the internet treats everyone as "English" or "American-Only" and it's WRONG!! But I do understand the need for this mailing list to be english-only. Does it have jumpers? #4. do you know how to configure ppp?? #5. are you on a network *and* or does the computer in question need to be a gateway?? #6. what com port is your modem on? #7. are there *any* additional com ports in use? #8. what are your system specs (primarily motherboard, cpu)? #9. do you know enough to compile a kernel and or use boot -c? (plz note that if you don't I can help you) Suggestions 1. I suggest you use a com1 or com3, by default I belive FreeBSD only has com1 & com2 enabled in the kernel so useing com3 IRQ 4 would be fine. Or use com1 irq 4 and disable com1 in your BIOS (do any of these steps in suggestion #1 only if your not using a mouse on com1 or 3). 2. If you have a win-modem *on-some* you can turn-off pnp.. so do it 3. use your jumpers to configure your modem to the correct port ### EXAMPLE SCRIPTS BELOW... only use them if you know what you are doing!!!... also, these examples come from the 2.2.7-RELEASE. Where am I > supposed to declare the nameservers? You can manually create one. Use your favorite text editor and create a new /etc/resolv.conf file containing the proper lines. Now, I'm running a local caching named, which makes it possible for me to write: % cat /etc/resolv.conf domain hell.gr nameserver 127.0.0.1 But you might want to change this to your ISP's domain/name-servers. % cat /etc/resolv.conf domain otenet.gr nameserver 195.170.0.2 nameserver 195.170.2.1 Note that having your /etc/host.conf file include `bind' somewhere is also a good idea. % cat /etc/host.conf hosts bind This says in which order to check for a name. First an attempt is made to find the name/IP-address in /etc/hosts, and if that fails, the name servers listed in /etc/resolv.conf are contacted. > [2] In FreeBSD 3.4 there is no minicom! Damn! Do I have to use chat or > wvdial? Where the heck can I find wvdial AND minicom? (I think > in WC's 3.1 there was a minicom package - maybe I'll get it from > there). You can do one of two things to solve this "problem". Either use the cu(1) program and a proper shell script to `communicate' over your serial port(s), something like: % cat cisco.sh #!/bin/sh case $1 in /dev/*) PORT=$1 ;; *) PORT=/dev/"$1" ;; esac cu -o -e -p "${PORT}" -s 9600 or, if you find cu(1) much too inconvenient and really like the ease of minicom, you can install minicom from the ports. This is usually (if you have the ports tree installed), as easy as: # cd /usr/ports/comms/minicom # make install > [3] Can you tell me where to find greek/hellenic iso8859-7 fonts for > the console? You can use the same fonts as those packaged with greek-console, the Linux package for greek support. Copy the font `grfixed' from your consolefonts/ directory into /usr/share/syscons/fonts and then you can use the font as easily as: % vidcontrol -f 8x16 grfixed If you want a keyboard map that will let you write greek on your console too, then you can easily find one my sending a mail message to `jackal@hack.gr' who told me a few days ago he was trying to finish his keyboard map for doing exactly this; i.e. writing in Greek. > [4] How can I make my own fonts and keymaps? :) You got me there. I had copied much of `grfixed' from my Trident VGA's memory, and hacked the few bits that I didn't like with a hex editor. I haven't researched much the topic after that. If you wanna know how to setup a unix gateway/router, just let me know. I'll need to know the following 1. what kinda machine you have (processor, etc.) 2. what kinda connection you have (DSL, cable, etc.) 3. will the router/gateway be using 2 nics or one? 4. do you know howto compile a kernel? 5. which freebsd version you are running send this to me in a *private* email (or this mailing list, it really doesn't matter to me). I'll send you some examples of how to setup a router/gateway and you can play with them all you want :) Here's some things you need to know: FOR 3.2 & 3.4-RELEASE 1. rc.conf located in your /etc dir can be edited. This file contain a lot of the services needed at startup. 2, rc.conf in /etc/defaults/ I NOT TO BE TOUCHED!!! the rc.conf file in the /etc contains the OVERRIDES. Meaning, you will see things like "# -- sysinstall generated deltas -- #". this mean these are the overides to the /etc/defaults/rc.conf needed at startup. where it says "ifconfig" is where you edit you NIC card ex. ifconfig_ep0 can be changeded to ifconfig_de0... etc. NOTE: (edit the "ep0" & "de0" to your own nic) the ifconfig line is the main "configure" paramater for you network cards. to enable nat, add the line natd_enable="YES" to your rc.conf file. You will also need the natd_interface="ep0" to configure it to whichever nic (keep in mind you have to edit the "ep0" part to your own personal nic). gateway_enable="YES" in you rc.conf file turns you machine into a gateway. router_enable="YES" turns on routing. I belive the router_enable="YES" differs from gateway_enable="YES" in a sense that you can configure more advanced routing options. defaultrouter="xx.xx.xx.xx" sets up the gateway of the connection for the gateway box *If needed* (don't use this address on your *client* boxes becuase they may not be able to see it). Then all you have to do is configure all your client boxes to the IP of the Gateway/freeBSD box. If you need any further help, email me. also, visit: http://www.vmunix.com/fbsd-book/ for some basic help. I'm gonna have a website (soon maybe) containing all the info a *newbie* needs on setting up various configurations under FreeBSD. -cosmic-665 >One of my main objectives is this very thing. This is a Cmedia or "SoundPro" Chipset. I have the soundcard and I'm now trying to configure it. here are the problems I'm having. I use the following in my kernel: controller snd0 device sb0 at isa? port 0x220 irq 5 drq 1 vector sbintr device opl0 at isa? port 0x388 and it compiles. then I add the following to my /kernel.config USERCONFIG pnp 1 0 os enable irq0 5 drq0 0 drq1 1 port0 0x220 port1 0x300 port2 0x388 pnp 1 1 os enable port0 0x201 quit add I add this to my /boot.conf load /kernel load -t userconfig_script /kernel.config autoboot when I do the following I get *something similar to this*: NOTE! SB Pro support required with your soundcard! snd0: opl0 at 0x388 on isa snd0: when I go to run enlightenment with sound it hangs (ok I expect this.. it's not using the correct driver). This chipset is windows sound system compatible and sound blaster compatible. when I configure my kernel with the following (keeping all the other varibles I have explained up above): controller snd0 device sb0 at isa? port 0x220 irq 5 drq 1 vector sbintr device mss0 at isa? port 0x530 irq 10 drq 3 I goto run enlightenment I get Kernel errors about a conflicting dma channel. If I swap drq 3 to 1 on the mss0 and drq 1 to 3 on the sb0 I still get trouble. also, I tried using the pcm driver. The problem with the pcm driver is when I do "sh ./MAKEDEV pcm0 pcm1", It says: pcm0 - no such device name pcm1 - no such device name how can I make a pcmx device node??? I know it's possible and I've done it before. I was initially running 3.4-RELEASE then I cvsuped to 3.4-STABLE (I just love "make-world" code as it compiles on my K6-2 333MHz :P). If I can ./MAKEDEV pcm0 pcm1, then I can get this card to work. I would then have to change my kernel to: controller pnp0 device pcm0 at pnp? and add the following to /boot/loader.rc: \ initialize pnp pnpscan this should work.. I configured *both* my ESS 1868 & 1869 this way. BUT I CAN'T MAKE THE $&*#!!!! pcm0 or pcm1 device nodes!!! can anyone help me out here???.... and I don't mean a suggesting 1 bullet and a pistol :P -cosmic-665 ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Wed Mar 15 4:25:33 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from bne005m.server-mail.com (bne005m.server-mail.com [202.139.234.85]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id C902037B9AD for ; Wed, 15 Mar 2000 04:25:25 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from wyldephyre2@yahoo.com) Received: (qmail 11763 invoked from network); 15 Mar 2000 12:25:21 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO timberwolf) (203.147.162.188) by bne005m.server-mail.com with SMTP; 15 Mar 2000 12:25:21 -0000 Message-ID: <006601bf8e7c$fd6f9360$bca293cb@timberwolf> From: "Haikal Saadh" To: "Leandro" Cc: References: Subject: Re: FW: Majordomo results: Confirmation for unsubscribe freebsd-new Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2000 22:49:56 +1000 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2615.200 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.00.2615.200 Sender: owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Well said...what's with the auto forward thing anyway? It is also available at http://www.welearn.com.au/freebsd/newbies/) FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "subscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message.
