It certainly is a big hole in network security and circumvents the security that's put in place when you install NT. However, IMHO, for it to be a hole, you need to have something to hide or to protect. In my case, I don't store any sensitive data on my WIN NT 4.0 (sp 6) machine and really don't care if someone breaks into it. The only thing that would annoy me is if somone broke in and trashed it. This wouldn't bother me too bad, since I have a current ghost image of my configuration on CD and it would take me about 20 minutes to pour it back on. As far as traffic sniffing goes, I'm sure there are tons of apps and methods out there that could capture/expose a lot of information, regardless of whether plaintext passwords are enabled or not. Knowing this, you certainly wouldn't want to make it easy for someone. However, I believe the best security you could have would be to get good and frequent backups of your system and don't have anything someone would want to steal. I tend to care less about my WIN NT machine and focus most of my attention/efforts on my PC running FreeBSD.  That's where all the good stuff is!  8^)

I think, plaintext password is A BIG HOLE in network security. I'd recommend use it only when you
absolutely sure, that nobody can steal/snoop/catch/listen (or other many methods :-) ) your traffic.
If you aren't sure, you have to read DOMAIN_CONTROL.txt, ENCRYPTION.txt, NTDOMAIN.txt and
Passwords.txt (and Samba doc catalog contained many other useful hints :-) ), which describes how
to use encrypted native NT passwords. If you have NT domain controller, you can include Samba
computer into NT domain and now it will be check passwords through NT server.

Any of you guys have any experience with the tools that would let you do that kind of thing. My best guess is Samba for fileserving over a secure shell. and apache with ssl and a passwords for the video. I had them running fine as # perl cgifile.pl or from Netscape as (in my case) http://1.0.0.177/cgi-bin/cgifile.pl but since setting up Apache as a Proxy Server, the Netscape way is no longer working although #perl cgifile.pl is still OK. Apache is working fine for dial-outs to the WWW from both the local machine and the LAN (I have ppp -auto ISP running) but is refusing connections to http://1.0.0.177/cgi-bin/cgifile.pl from the local machine and from the LAN. I have tried chmods 705 755 and even 777 for cgifile.pl to no avail and as far as I can see, /etc/hosts.allow is allowing local connections OK. To reiterate, I could run my pl files from Netscape before setting up Apache as a Proxy Server and so assume that the problem is something to do with this. Thanks for any suggestions. Tony. Midnight Commander is great for exploring your system. Just remember that the package or port name is starts with "mc" but that the binary is called "midc" under FreeBSD. Chris, I wasn't aware that there was some kind of rule or that it would be considered impolite to submit an article to more than one site. I worked hard on this article and spent most of a day, trying to write it. I wrote the article and submitted it to more than one site, hoping to help others and spread the word about a useful application that runs on FreeBSD. It's rules/attitudes like this that make it very discouraging when someone like myself, is just trying to help the rest of the BSD community. In the future, if I come up with some information that I think would help others or I have an idea for another article, I will certainly think hard about sharing it or writing it at all. Chris,

I wasn't aware that there was some kind of rule or that it would be considered impolite to submit an article to more than one site. Thanks for nothing.

Since your article is already published on BSD Tday, we will not be
publishing it.  Thankyou for considering us for publication.

The exceptions to this rule are so rare as to be explicitly marked as "Accepts Simultaneous Submissions" in market listings. To the best of my knowledge, no tech publisher accepts simultaneous submissions. Sorry, Joe, this one isn't a FreeBSD limitation, it's a publishing one. Yes, publishing guidelines suck. There are entire newsgroups dedicated to discussing exactly how. :) ==ml To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Wed Aug 23 17:39:57 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from odin.acuson.com (odin.acuson.com [157.226.230.71]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1299437B423 for ; Wed, 23 Aug 2000 17:39:55 -0700 (PDT) Received: from acuson.com ([157.226.69.47]) by odin.acuson.com (Netscape Messaging Server 3.54) with ESMTP id AAA4FAA; Wed, 23 Aug 2000 17:42:14 -0700 Message-ID: <39A46E43.AB37D125@acuson.com> Date: Wed, 23 Aug 2000 17:37:23 -0700 From: David Johnson Organization: Acuson X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.7 [en] (X11; U; SunOS 5.5.1 sun4m) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Joe Warner Cc: Chris Coleman , freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Subject: Re: [dn-editors] I have a story.. The FBSD packages are, in a nutshell, just precompiled ports with a simplified interface. Using the ports directly offers extreme flexibility and power, far beyond anything RPM has, although the downside is the time of compilation. The connection is NAT'd which means all the internal addresses are on 192.168.x. range. :( After choosing the FTP site and asking the system to use DHCP it can't detect the settings from the router. This takes me to a blank ifconfig screen. I tried adding the settings as instucted by my ISP. Gateway: 192.168.254.254 name server: 192.168.254.254 IP: 192.168.254.3 (NT box had previously used this address.) mask: 255.255.255.0 Then the look up timed out as it could not resolve ftp.uk.freebsd.org. I've looked all over the website but can't find anything that can help - most install help files seem to be CDROM based. I've checked to see if Ethernet (3Com) has been detected and it says it has. Now, whenever I try to install ports through a http proxy by running sysinstall, I got "Fatal Error: Null name or value passed to set_varible2!". Does somebody have any idea how to make it? BTW: is ssh1 included in the ports? I couldn't find it. And I ran into errors when I tried to compile the source files. Thanks. ===== -- Cheer K __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! On a single machine with a modem you cannot do an FTP install. It is not clear to me what kind of setup you are using and have no experience with ADSL. A couple of months ago I installed FreeBSD 3.4 by ftp. I used two systems. On a Pentium-200 I ran SuSe Linux 6.2 with ISDN, IP forwarding and NAT. The installation was done on a a 486-120 which was connected to the Linux box with a LAN card. I used a fixed IP address for the 486, no DHCP. You mentioned a NT box. If you can set up the NT box with an equivalent functionality as my SuSe box it should work. That is incorrect.. you can installed via FTP with a modem. The system will allow you setup PPP and such to do so. It's a bit harder, but I have successfully done it that way. :) Rick To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message
