i cant get freebsd to work with DHCP, the only way i can get it = online is to=20 set it to a static IP

i will go into /stand/sysinstall, and select my NIC, it asks to = search for=20 DHCP servers i say yes, then a bunch of kernal lines come up

then i do a control-C, it then goes into the NIC config screen, = everything is=20 filled out correctly, it finds the server, then it has my comp name, = then my=20 complete online address, then my DNS servers and gateway info, it pulls up my default subnet mask, then i = say ok, then=20 it asks to bring it up, i select yes,

then i cant browse or ping any = site, i=20 reboot

still not online (no pinging any = sites work=20 nor browsing),

but if i set it to static = everything is ok, (I=20 DONT HAVE A STATIC IP, IT IS A LEASED IP FOR 1 WEEK)

how do i fix this

It masks most of these application issues. If you must try something else, get the Linux version, install the linux_base port/package, make sure you have linux_enable="YES" in /etc/rc.conf, and try run it. It should work with Linux compatibility. If you have any issues, send them to questions@FreeBSD.org. Subject: DHCP servers, or = getting=20 online with cable modem

question

i cant get freebsd to work with DHCP, the only way i can get it = online is=20 to set it to a static IP

i will go into /stand/sysinstall, and select my NIC, it asks to = search=20 for DHCP servers i say yes, then a bunch of kernal lines come up

then i do a control-C, it then goes into the NIC config screen,=20 everything is filled out correctly, it finds the server, then it has = my comp=20 name, then my complete online address, then my DNS servers and = gateway info,=20 it pulls up my default subnet = mask, then i=20 say ok, then it asks to bring it up, i select yes,

then i cant browse or ping any = site, i=20 reboot

still not online (no pinging = any sites=20 work nor browsing),

but if i set it to static = everything is=20 ok, (I DONT HAVE A STATIC IP, IT IS A LEASED IP FOR 1 = WEEK)

how do i fix this

Unlike IDE, the SCSI Bios needs to be turned on on the card itself to boot from scsi. Check your SCSI controller to make sure the SCSI-BIOS is enabled, and that your bootable SCSI drive is ID 0. Most likely, however check the online hardware compatability list at www.freebsd.org > Where can I find informations > on kernel configurations and so on? Same place mentioned above. Also, if you installed the kernel sources, you can read, but do not use the LINT file for your kernel. The LINT file will be in /usr/src/sys/i386/conf This smae location will have the GENERIC file which you will copy to your hostname and edit it to set all the kernel parameters you require. > Thank a lot in advance! > Enrico -- Bob Collins MCSE, FreeBSD Fanatic Driving my '95 E36/5 Active >> Sport on the www.InternetCoast.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Thu Aug 31 7: 7:18 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from osiris.ipform.ru (osiris.ipform.ru [212.158.165.98]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7D86E37B422 for ; Thu, 31 Aug 2000 07:07:15 -0700 (PDT) Received: from wp4.ipform.ru (wp4 [192.168.0.14]) by osiris.ipform.ru (8.9.3/8.9.3) with SMTP id SAA02085 for ; Thu, 31 Aug 2000 18:07:42 +0400 (MSD) (envelope-from infoteacher@mail.ru) From: Alexander Trapeznikov To: freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: auth 80a78a46 subscribe freebsd-newbies infoteacher@mail.ru Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2000 18:07:08 +0400 X-Mailer: KMail [version 1.0.28] Content-Type: text/plain MIME-Version: 1.0 Message-Id: <00083118072108.00463@wp4.ipform.ru> Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Sender: owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org auth 80a78a46 subscribe freebsd-newbies infoteacher@mail.ru To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Thu Aug 31 17:22:57 2000 Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from sj-cse-568.cisco.com (sj-cse-568.cisco.com [171.68.202.105]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4032337B424 for ; Thu, 31 Aug 2000 17:22:56 -0700 (PDT) Received: from localhost (tshah@localhost) by sj-cse-568.cisco.com (8.8.5/CA/950118) with ESMTP id RAA04031 for ; Thu, 31 Aug 2000 17:22:55 -0700 (PDT) Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2000 17:22:55 -0700 (PDT) From: Tejas Shah To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Subject: How I upgrade from FreeBSD 3.4 to 4.x using FTP ? When I found inn-2.2.2.tar.gz through ftpsearch it didn't installs, though md5 is same. One of .h files contains a typo and something in makefile is wrong. Then I found ...709.tar.gz on ftpsearch, it installs... but I'am afraid of some invisible errors inside. Which INN to use ? If so you can type "startx" to run it. If you didn't configure a window manager you can: cd /stand ./sysinstall That will bring up the graphical config program. I would advise that the first thing you do is to create a user account (see handbook or book) and do your experimenting and learning with that. With root you can screw everything up much too easily. The initial configuration will have to be done as root, however. There are a bunch of newbie docs on the web site that will be of use. Rob.
