Michel, you should repost your question, maybe with a little more information, to freebsd-questions@freebsd.org. You don't have to join that list in order to post there. Freebsd-questions is the only place to ask support questions. [Now... mainly for the others...] This is a really good example of why we must only use freebsd-questions for support. Laptops present their own little quirks, and it is very easy to make big mistakes (like wasting your weekend and driving yourself crazy) if someone tells you the wrong thing. If you write to freebsd-questions then the people answering will have some experience, and it is very likely that some of them will have the answer you need. If ever an experienced FreeBSD user on freebsd-questions responds with the wrong information, they will be quickly corrected by the others there, and you will get a copy of that email as well. If a newbie or expereicned FreeBSD user responds with the wrong information on freebsd-newbies, nobody corrects them and every other newbie in the world will believe that mistake. (And that has already happened a few times!) For example, I wouldn't be surprised if you need special boot disks in your case but I am not experienced with laptop installation of 3.3, so I could just be misleading you. But I could tell it to you with immense confidence, as if I know it to be the truth, then everyone here would go "Oooohh! Sue knows a lot! She's a genius!" even if I was wrong. But who would that be helping?? If I am really confident that I have the answer, I would be confident enough to readdress the reply email to freebsd-questions with a cc: to you. Someone who sends answers to freebsd-newbies is obviously not sufficiently confident about their answer to send it to a place where knowledgeable people might detect that it is wrong, so they shouldn't be giving answers at all. You want someone who knows for sure and who can tell you how or where to get what you need if you really do need it. When you get the right answer on freebsd-questions, you can solve your own problem _and_ the answer will go into the archives so that everyone else can find it when they have the problem. (You have already searched the freebsd-questions archives for a previous answer to a similar question, haven't you?) I hope you get your problem solved quickly and come back and join us for some chat, boasting, etc. Meanwhile, have a look at the Newbies FAK email that was sent out yesterday for more advice on dealing with problems. For the short story, see the welcome note that you received when you joined freebsd-newbies, and the list charters on the web site. Of course you can come back and ask here if I have confused you about using the mailing lists :-) -- Regards, -*Sue*- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Sun Dec 17 3:40:28 2000 From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Dec 17 03:40:20 2000 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from ipamzlx.physik.uni-mainz.de (ipamzlx.Physik.Uni-Mainz.DE [134.93.180.54]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7ABFE37B400; Sun, 17 Dec 2000 03:40:19 -0800 (PST) Received: from ipamzlx.Physik.Uni-Mainz.DE (ipamzlx.Physik.Uni-Mainz.DE [134.93.180.54]) by ipamzlx.physik.uni-mainz.de (8.11.1/8.11.0) with ESMTP id eBHBgK508204; Sun, 17 Dec 2000 12:42:22 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from ohartman@ipamzlx.physik.uni-mainz.de) Date: Sun, 17 Dec 2000 12:42:20 +0100 (CET) From: "O. Sometimes the only help to get one step ahead is to use csh instead of sh/ksh/bash, no matter why ...) I have several questions about how to deal with MySQL servers. On our Wintel/W2k boxes I installed StarOffice as well as on several new FreeBSD boxes. Under Win2k I install the MyODBC driver from the MySQL port and access is granted by the server. But how to do this with StarOffice on FreeBSD? I has a register mark ODBC, but how to install and configure where to find the correct ODBC driver? The first thing I did was to make a softlink of libmyodbc.so to /usr/local/office52/program/ where all the other libraries are located, but this was al ittle bit brain damaged, I think. I did not find any help about ODBC driver installation in StarOffice's help although it reports that SOffice52 has no ODBC driver, they have to come from the vendor of the SQL database. I have a laptop Libretto 100CT (does'nt have any CD-Rom) and I installed BSd release 4.2 and it wsa working fine and to power off I was using # /sbin/shutdown -h now and after that I manually switch off the power (though I do not know is it the right way to do it). Yesterday when I did this and after that I reboot the m/c then I got the message that file system is not clean and then I ran fsck manually and then i found that I do not know should I say yes or no to all these questions so I left it in between and then read some FAQ and found that I should run fsck -y /dev/ad01f as I got error with this file system only and then I got the message and I reboot the machine I did not do any thing after this command just reboot after the file system clean message. Now if I do ping it says that can'nt resolve and if I use IP adress then I get message that route not found. I am also getting some messages during boot time that some files are missing. Please first of all telll me that how can i avoid this to happen in the future. Do I have to reload the BSD, I am using it from my school in DHCP mode. Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org FreeBSD-Newbies First Aid Kit (This is a regular posting to the FreeBSD-Newbies mailing list. It is also available at http://www.welearn.com.au/freebsd/newbies/) FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "subscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message. But the problem is that the machine is 486DX4 with 8 MB ram without boot from CDROM bios support. I want to avoid creating boot floppies. So, my quesstion is can i take my h/d to my friend's machine and install FreeBSD in my h/d. If possible where can i load the boot loader. My h/d will be in slave mode. Please let me know the possible solutions to this problem. I have 4 GB h/d out of which 1.2 Gb will be dedicated to FreeBSD and the rest to windows 95 which I have already installed. I have also made the required 1.2Gb partition. Thanks a lot and waiting for the reply. -- Best regards, mailto:katilno420@yahoo.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message
