Any changes I make to scripts, changes to root's password, etc., are not actually saved to disk and upon reboot root's passwd is still "setup" and none of my other changes are saved. From searching the archives it seems that there should be an "update" script under /stand/ to do this...but it is not there. I did find a script under /etc called update, but this script does not seem to work unless I modify it prior to use (to point it to the correct device to be mounted). When the /etc/update script does seem to work (after the mod), I find that it still did not save any changes....weird! I would like to add some additional binaries to /usr/local/bin and have the ability to make changes to files in /etc....how can I do this?? So far I've had no luck. PicoBSD copies up the /etc directory from the boot media (in this case the SANdisk) for it's MFS root. You'll have to remount the SANdisk volume and modify the /etc files on there if you want to make permanent changes. However, testing everything out was presenting a problem to me today. To the best of my knowledge, I've got everything set up right. I've got an embedded PC with an 8MB DiskOnChip, sliced and partitioned correctly. I've got boot1 and boot2 from 4.0-RELEASE loading a kgzipped kernel compiled from 4.0-STABLE sources. I've got all the required files (including fstab). The kernel loads just fine off of the DOC. Despite this, the kernel keeps trying to mount ad0s1a as root. I did have a hard drive attached with a different root filesystem on ad0s1a, so I removed the hard drive. Now the kernel just drops into manual root device selection mode. So the basic problem is that the kernel isn't choosing fla0s1a as the root device. Just to make sure, then, is my dumb question: in 4.0-STABLE, how does the kernel decide what device to use for the root filesystem? Thanks for bearing with me. :) =============================== Jeffrey S. I originally used the prep.fla.sh script from 3.4-RELEASE to prepare the DOC a few months ago. I haven't touched the MBR since then, but I replaced boot1 and boot2 with the 4.0-RELEASE versions by hand (disklabel). When I boot from the DOC, boot2 sees the DOC as BIOS drive 0, reads boot.conf, and tries 0:ad(0,a)/kernel.kgz after a few seconds. The kernel uncompresses, does its little dance, and eventually tries to mount the wrong root device. Things I haven't done yet are: * Try putting boot1 and boot2 on it again * Try using a non-kgzipped kernel =============================== Jeffrey S. We've tried DOC, solid state drivers and the IDE <-> CF solutions. We had bad reliability problems with DOC2k, which have evidentally been corrected. We also had availability problems with DOC2k as well as price problems (they are 20% more expensive than CF + IDE adapter). We found that the solid state disks worked great, but were too expensive per megabyte in the flash versions and harder to get than CF. We use the CF <-> IDE adapter. They are cheap for us to make (on the order of $20 for the custom units we make), and allow us to use the CF cards which are the cheapest at the moment. We see that we can get the CF + IDE Adapter for on the order of $150 for 64MB, while the DOC is (was) stll running $190+ with 3 month lead time. Various commercial IDE <-> CF adapters we've found run in the $40-$50 range. This is what the fla driver README says: "FreeBSD 4.0 and forward find their root device by reading the /etc/fstab, so the DiskOnChip devices will work just like any other device." How the kernel reads /etc/fstab before it knows where / is is beyond me. Moving on... "In pre 4.0 versions specifying the boot device in the kernel config file this way is the easiest way to do it: config kernel root on major 28 minor 65538" Anyway, I'll give it a try. =============================== Jeffrey S. However, you might want to go look at the patches I made to it in 3.x.
