Subject: odd spacing fonts under XFree86-4

I'm quite happy with my KDE/XFree86-4 combination but for one thing: the
font space is sometimes odd. For example, the spacing after a 'm' or a '-
' is larger than other characters. The problem seems to occur only with
some fonts, but Times New Roman is what I want to use.

I've tried using other sizes, other fonts, etc. Interestingly enough,
Lucidabright has the opposite problem. The '-' extends into the space
after it. How annoying.

Clues please?

p.s. There's some -advocacy in this as I'm going to be using this
workstation for a presentation at an upcoming talk to a Linux User Group
and this is one little nit I'd like to get solved. Thanks.
