  Netserver e800?
My company wants to buy it, but if Freebsd can't be
  installed on it.....(arghh)!
Or is there some other Server (Compaq? ibm?)
good/cheap for Freebsd?
  Thanks all bye

Thanks for the reply, are your e60's with two or one
processors? and is difficult the installation of
FreeBSD (scsi etc)? , because we've only installed it
on normal pc's since now.
best regards

I've got everal lpr running it, and a couple of older netservers I
seriously doubt that you'll have any problems. The only isseu is that
these e800's are eol and your miliage may vary, but then again the same
thing happend to the cpq proliant 800's and I've had great luck with
those. Personally if I could I grab one of these.

Depends on what you mean by a "Server". We just bought a "server" for
us$800, but when you look inside the hardware really isn't what most
people would call "server".

Good / Cheap / FreeBSD

You can have any two <smile>.

I was recently put in charge of a project involving FreeBSD 4.4-RELEASE. =
The
goal of the project is to configure a FreeBSD based web cluster. Natural=
ly,
we are looking for fail-over and load-balancing solutions. (The load-bala=
ncing
solution would direct HTTP request to the best available web node. The
director would hopefully run on a FreeBSD system as I was given no fundin=
g for
additional hardware. Basically, FreeBSD or bust.)

Are there existing solutions? I did a search of freebsd-cluster with the
phrase "load balancing" and came up a bit short on information. (The arch=
ives
for freebsd-questions wasn't searchable for some reason.) Any tips or lea=
ds on
this?

I recently worked with Linux and LVS (on a Red Hat High Availability Serv=
ice
cluster), and that type of setup would be ideal. (Alas, changing to LVS i=
s
also not an option.) Just an example of what would be really nice to have=
 in
terms of features for the solution. :)

Regards, Dustin

To be honest, for what you want, looking around the freebsd-isp archives is
going to yield more. As far as solutions go, yes, there are some available.
There is a commercial product - PolyServe's Local Cluster stuff, and their
high availability stuff is all supposed to be reasonable. There is also a
shedload of free solutions, at least one of which was mentioned on one of the
20-odd lists I'm on at the moment that is built on PicoBSD. I can't find the
docs on that atm, but if I do, I'll send them on.

Well, -cluster probably isn't the right place. This is a quiet list, and most
people here tend to be running their insane pieces of code over something
like PVM or some-such - i.e. large scientific applications that need
parallelism rather than HA/Load balancing.
