(much like my high school years and getting a date). anyway, i have oracle8.1.7 linux tar file and have untarred it and tried to run the runInstaller straight. but ofcourse i got some errors. first it said that modify_ldt wasn't working and that i needed: option USER_LDT in my kernel. so, i added that. than i tried to run runInstaller again, and it just went in a loop about some kernel 9 error being trapped and i needed to ctl-alt-del to reboot. so, than i modified the oraparam.ini file to change the jre on it. i have linux-jdk1.2.2 installed on my machine. i remember that when i ran the installer, it said something about needing jdk1.1.8 or higher. so, i set the JRE_LOCATION=/usr/local/linux-jdk1.2.2 but i get a message saying that i don't have the /usr/local/linux-jdk1.2.2/bin/jre directory or file. so, i made a link in the bin directory to the jre director of the linux-jdk1.2.2 directory. but i don't have any actual jre command. anyway, the next time i ran it, i get the following error. I tried the same thing about 6 months ago, and got the same results. As far as I know, everyone running Oracle 8.1.7 under FreeBSD ran the installer under Linux, tarred up the result and copied it over to FreeBSD. At some point (8.1.6?), Oracle rewrote the installer in Java, and incorporated the JRE into the distribution. Since then, the installer has not been able to run under FreeBSD. There was some more information about JRE issues posted to either the emulation or the ports list a while back. Oh well, at least now I have the satisfaction of knowing that being a proffesional computer geek is very sexy :-). To quote Scott Adams: } I think it's a Darwinian thing. Complete article at: http://www.techweb.com/winmag/library/1995/0595/05opine.htm#a8 Back in Dec. I posted my experience installing 8.1.6. Most of it was how to trick the stupid installer to use a jre other then the one that came bundled with it. I haven't looked at 8.1.7 so I don't know how much of my experience would help, but you can find it at: http://www.FreeBSD.org/cgi/getmsg.cgi?fetch=7927+13188+/usr/local/www/db/text/2000/freebsd-database/20001210.freebsd-database Good luck. -stacy -- Nothing spoils fun like finding out it builds character. - Calvin Stacy Millions stacy@millions.ca Millions Consulting Limited To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-database" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-database Thu May 31 10:49:54 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-database@freebsd.org Received: from Millions.Ca (h-207-228-120-32.gen.cadvision.com [207.228.120.32]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F09B837B423 for ; Thu, 31 May 2001 10:49:49 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from stacy@Millions.Ca) Received: (from uucp@localhost) by Millions.Ca (8.11.1/8.9.3) id f4VHnhm48881; Thu, 31 May 2001 11:49:43 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from stacy@Millions.Ca) Received: from Cedar.Millions.Ca(192.168.64.8) via SMTP by mail-gw-0.millions.ca, id smtpdW48879; Thu May 31 11:49:39 2001 Received: from millions.ca (Maple.Millions.Ca [192.168.64.2]) by cedar.millions.ca (8.11.1/8.11.3) with ESMTP id f4VHnax39244; Thu, 31 May 2001 11:49:36 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from stacy@millions.ca) Message-ID: <3B168430.905295DA@millions.ca> Date: Thu, 31 May 2001 11:49:36 -0600 From: Stacy Millions Organization: Millions Consulting Limited X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.76 [en] (Windows NT 5.0; U) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Peter Choe Cc: freebsd-database@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: oracle8.1.7 on freebsd 4.3-stable References: <3B1645CF.74C4D702@mindspring.com> <3B166A76.41234135@millions.ca> <3B167B64.CC50F3D8@mindspring.com> Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="------------3725110290081F0EC76CBC3D" Sender: owner-freebsd-database@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------3725110290081F0EC76CBC3D Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Peter Choe wrote: [snip] > how do you install the linux jre? i downloaded it and just untarred > it. but it seems to me that is not correct. any help would be > appreciated. As I recall, there were two things I had to do to beat the Blackdown jre into running on FreeBSD. The first was to supply an arch command. This amounted to a shell script that I put in /compat/linux/bin #!/bin/sh echo i686 The second was a crude hack of the jre script itself. See the attached patch file. It is not pretty, but since I only wanted this jre long enough to install oracle, I didn't really care :-) This patch is against the jre 1.1.6v5 so it proably won't apply cleanly to 1.1.8 -stacy -- Nothing spoils fun like finding out it builds character. - Calvin Stacy Millions stacy@millions.ca Millions Consulting Limited --------------3725110290081F0EC76CBC3D Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; name="linuxjre.patch" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline; filename="linuxjre.patch" *** jre.orig Wed Dec 13 20:50:18 2000 --- jre Wed Dec 6 13:20:21 2000 *************** *** 17,22 **** --- 17,24 ---- ;; esac + THREADS_TYPE=green_threads + if [ -z "$JAVA_HOME" ] then PRG=`type -p $0` >/dev/null 2>&1 *************** *** 48,56 **** if [ -z "${IN_JDK_BUILD}" ] then ! if [ -x ${JAVA_HOME}/bin/checkVersions ] then ! if ${JAVA_HOME}/bin/checkVersions jre then # note the trailing colon is required!
