See the attached diff. Basically; 1. Pull out the code to handle , as the regular stylesheets now do this. 2. Slightly change the handling of the footer at the bottom of HTML files. The $email-footer$ function must now make sure the text is wrapped inside one or more

elements. 3. Pull out the broken definitions of *-label-title-sep, and replace it with something that doesn't (yet) work, but should do with the next version of Norm's stylesheets. 4. Pull out all the docinfo stuff, it doesn't work. 5. Remove the code that handle's , it's been rolled into Norm's stylesheets. The change to the English specific freebsd.dsl is the second part of the $email-footer$ change. It also adds some additional text that (a) tells the reader that the document can be downloaded from the FTP site, to hopefully cut down on some of those questions, and (b) includes a specific link to the other documentation on the web site. Is only the (content of the) floppy itself involved in these security implications (caused through the permissions "666"), or are there side effects with the setting of vfs.usermount ? I never remember to read that paragraph at the top when I'm looking for the list. It's just too well hidden is a bunch of stuff that just screams "I'm a bunch of legal BS you don't want to read!" More obvious delimitation from the legal stuff would certaintly help though I'm not sure how to do it. I'm working through the code, but without some documentation that describes the basic concept behind how gmat is supposed to work, it's hard going. I'd be surprised if gmat is long for this world -- between DSSSL on the SGML side, and (more importantly) XSL on the XML side, custom hacks like this are likely to go away. It's nice for developers to have a place to put miscellaneous stuff like motivations, justifications, rationale, etc. Sometimes the "HISTORY" section doesn't quite cut it, and there are an increasing number of replacement interfaces and commands. For example, the "md" interface replaced the "mfs" interface. There wasn't really an appropriate "officially sanctioned" place to put the justification of the change. A snapshot, which tracks the state of 5.0-CURRENT, is at: http://people.freebsd.org/~bmah/relnotes/ Note that the architecture-dependent files (relnotes and hardware) were produced using only one set of source files. Thanks to the wonders of our DocBook toolchain, we can do multiple formats of the release documentation. Through consolidation, I've pruned down the number of files the user sees from about 10 to 4. I'm not completely happy with the way it's turned out, and I might break out the installation-related text into its own document. Also the back parts of the relnotes might move to the readme document. Things I'd like to ask the doc project: 1. What do you think? 2. Is it time to socialize this to a larger audience, and if so, which audience? I was thinking of something like either -current or -hackers. 3. Anyone want to help? I'm getting a little tired marking up documents. Plus, I don't know how good my DocBook markup is. 4. I just stumbled on the docproj current projects page. If Doug reads this, I didn't know that you (or anyone else) was working on "Fixup the FOO.TXT files". Have I stepped on your toes? If so, I'm sorry. 5. The next steps are something like this: A. Figure out how to do markup on {alpha/i386}/INSTALL.TXT (which I just discovered) and alpha/HARDWARE.TXT. Or at the very least, what to do with these files. (Jordan, can I hack on / replace INSTALL.TXT? This looks like what goes on the liner notes for the CD.) (Wilko, we talked briefly about you doing markup for alpha/HARDWARE.TXT. Feel up to it?) B. Figure out the magic necessary to generate the *.TXT files at release-building time. C. Check documents into the tree (-CURRENT only). D. Commit RELNOTESng-building magic. We should make RELNOTESng off by default, but I don't want to delay it any longer than necessary, because I'm maintaining *three* release notes files just for CURRENT. E. Enable RELNOTESng building with releases by default. F. *Maybe* MFC to 4-STABLE (after 4.3-RELEASE). Lots of steps here, but I feel like I'm pretty close to something commitable, and as it now, it gives a pretty good idea of what the final product should look like. I'd like to get the blessing of someone authoritative (Nik? Jordan?) that this is at least a halfway worthy effort and that I stand a reasonable chance of putting this in the tree. Thanks! Where is the replacement of /usr/src/release/sysinstall located? I couldn't find it in the source for 5.0-Current last week. I heard that perhaps sysinstall will remain in 5.0-Release and that's why I couldn't find its replacement. I was looking for it to get a good preview of what I'd have to translate once the new installation instructions are done. I did translate part of sysinstall already just to get "warmed up" and be ready to deliver a great final product. Once my translation is done I'm thinking it would be wisest to post it on some web space I have and invite native Spanish speaking FreeBSD users to test it out and proofread it.
