But don't forget that the files in the www directory are meant for the web site. I agree that one user should expect the same content than in the release/snapshot but i think this user should also expect the same framework than the other web pages (for instance, at a minimum, the same header and footer). And, without the standard SGML "skeleton", that's unfortunately not the case. > Here's another thought. It makes you do a little more work but you do > gain something in the end. It's an interesting proposal, even if it indeed doesn't really solve the problem. What are the steps to follow for a release/doc/fr_FR.ISO8859-1 directory ? I translate the current english files and i send them directly to you ? To try to conclude the discussion about the HTML files, i would say that basically the new HTML design (vs the old simple one) is a win but i personally think that the disappearance of the SGML is a bad thing notably because it freezes the page design (no more entities). So, on my side, i see only 2 solutions : - either i translate the english files without any change but then i'm totally tied to the current HTML design and content. - or i change the files in the translated version in order to be able to use again the SGML features. But then it's beyond a simple translation and that's a bad thing too :-/ Stephane Legrand. -- Je recherche un emploi dans le domaine de l'informatique : PHP, Perl, SQL, FreeBSD, Linux, Internet... So the markup should be changed to somethink like: Refer to the Microsoft Knowledge Base documents Q1= 58474 - Windows TCPIP Registry Entries and Q1= 20642 - TCPIP & NBT Configuration Parameters for Windows NT and for more information on changing Windows MTU to work with a NAT router. or even Refer to the Microsoft Knowledge Base documents Wi= ndows TCPIP Registry Entries and TC= PIP & NBT Configuration Parameters for Windows NT and for more information on changing Windows MTU to work with a NAT router. b) there seems to be no article Q120 in Microsoft Knowledge Base, the URL that was added points to article Q129642, and the URL is correct. In other words, we should replace all references to Q120 with references to Q120246. Unless there is protest, I intend to change this section of the FAQ to the second variant in a couple of days. /s/Udo --=20 "The Customer is always right, the Customers shall pay for their arrogance" -- Catbert --NzB8fVQJ5HfG6fxh Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.6 (FreeBSD) Comment: For info see http://www.gnupg.org iQCVAwUBO7du3EPoh1XnT6hxAQFWXQP/boD2MkXVQjGlwD3noKf0WmbDAwEzcFgY IiWYnS7a4G/X8yb72K017CDucq0vuKtKZgonmxcaXr3i+rAIcwYMOd5np4BD4qsc 9587IsRPvAvMt/SNtYovHF0G9yiSuiavqy3xDRz3w53cXQV18b+Z7aEte1FCzaaz uwGkVGnwIyw= =oomk -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --NzB8fVQJ5HfG6fxh-- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Sun Sep 30 12:30: 9 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.FreeBSD.org [216.136.204.21]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 798D937B40F for ; Sun, 30 Sep 2001 12:30:00 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.11.4/8.11.4) id f8UJU0G34723; Sun, 30 Sep 2001 12:30:00 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from gnats) Received: from colon.colondot.net (colon.colondot.net [212.135.138.209]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 10A0337B403 for ; Sun, 30 Sep 2001 12:29:50 -0700 (PDT) Received: from jdamery by colon.colondot.net with local (Exim 3.31 #1) id 15nmHc-000F3Q-00 for FreeBSD-gnats-submit@freebsd.org; Sun, 30 Sep 2001 20:29:48 +0100 Message-Id: Date: Sun, 30 Sep 2001 20:29:48 +0100 From: Jonathan Amery Reply-To: Jonathan Amery To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@freebsd.org X-Send-Pr-Version: 3.113 Subject: docs/30940: manpath documentation confusing or confused Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org >Number: 30940 >Category: docs >Synopsis: manpath documentation confusing or confused >Confidential: no >Severity: non-critical >Priority: low >Responsible: freebsd-doc >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: doc-bug >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Sun Sep 30 12:30:00 PDT 2001 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: Jonathan Amery >Release: FreeBSD 4.4-STABLE i386 >Organization: Chiark Orbital / :. >Environment: System: FreeBSD colon.colondot.net 4.4-STABLE FreeBSD 4.4-STABLE #0: Sat Sep 22 18:07:46 BST 2001 root@colon.colondot.net:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/COLONDOT i386 >Description: The manpath manpage reads: Manpath tries to determine the user's manpath from a set of system defaults and the user's PATH, echoing the result to the standard output. Attached is a patch that fixes some more minor problems. Most of the changes are mechanical, such as &man.ntp.8; -> &man.ntpd.8; and other such typos. The only non-mechanical change is about the driftfile. Your explanation was a ways off; it does not countain "information about previous responses from the NTP servers you are using". In fact, I think ntpd can compute the drift without an external time source. I'm far from an NTP guru, and having read some more I've got a better understanding of what's going on. I've updated the document (again) taking your feedback into account. These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The report has been examined by a team member and evaluated. f - feedback The problem has been solved, and the originator has been given a patch or a fix has been committed. The PR remains in this state pending a response from the originator. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested. Anyway, a pointer to doc.docbook.mk for finding out about those other formats, and an example of building multiple formats with FORMATS="x y z" seems more proper. The Darwin team (http://www.darwin.org/) is very interested in such a=20 project, and has offered to provide a server for it. We (those working=20= on this unified doc project) would need to administer the server=20 ourselves. Nik, Murray, and I were discussing setting up a system such that you=20 could build the doc that applied to all platforms, or the doc for a=20 specific platform. Much of the effort would be in getting people to=20 contribute to this project if they are doing "standard UNIX doc", so=20 that all projects would benefit. My personal opinion is that, more important than the ability for a doc=20= project to add some standard doc would be the general website that would=20= inevitably result from this. Having a central website where all=20 standard Unix doc is located, with discussions of platform differences,=20= might be a big benefit to all. The big question is how to get it going given Nik's busy-ness. We were=20= discussing starting with the existing FreeBSD tool chain for producing=20= things, and evolving that over time as possible (in particular, to move=20= away from dependence on the current PDF tools, assuming another more=20 living solution ever comes available; and possibly to one of the more=20 recent approaches to 'make'). As such, hopefully another benefit of this=20= project would be a standard tool chain that any doc project could easily=20= adopt. -- Ron On Wednesday, September 26, 2001, at 03:35 PM, Jorge Godoy wrote: > Nik Clayton writes: > >> I've been talking with the folks at Darwin about setting up a > > Excuse me for my ignorance, but what's 'Darwin'? In particular, the mount commands don't list the mount point, you probably don't want to update /etc/dumpdates during this process, and there are problems using tar that aren't mentioned. >How-To-Repeat: Try following the old directions. >Fix: The attached patch fixes the english version to correct all the above. It replaces the examples that used tar with examples that use dump. It adds tar to the list of other things to consider for moving data, but mentions the known problem. It drops cpdup from that list, as I don't know if that has problems or not. --- book.sgml.orig Thu Oct 4 02:36:12 2001 +++ book.sgml Thu Oct 4 02:58:21 2001 @@ -6953,14 +6953,14 @@ formatting-media tutorial

There must be so many changes to be committed. One of these is the section 4. Because of the changes in the kernel configuration file and the introduction of /boot/device.hints, we need massive update there. All the lines describing lines in kernel configuration file must be changed from device foo0 at isa port xxx irq yyy... to device foo and its resource "hints" in /boot/device.hints must be described. In addition, a number of man 4 pages appear to be simply out of date, with respect to resource allocation and probe/attach behavior in the newbus framework. I made preliminary changes to some of the files in man4 and man4/man4.i386. But I am not quite sure if I have done it right, and there still are so many more files to be changed. - Files I have tried to update: In src/share/man/man4: adv.4, adw.4, aha.4, ahc.4, ata.4, atkbd.4, atkbdc.4, bt.4, cd.4, da.4, fdc.4, gusc.4, joy.4, lp.4, lpt.4, pass.4, pcm.4, pcvt.4, psm.4, rp.4, sa.4, sbc.4, si.4, sio.4, syscons.4, vga.4, vpo.4 In src/share/man/man4/man4.i386: aic.4, asc.4, cs.4, cx.4, cy.4, el.4, fe.4, ie.4, le.4, lnc.4, matcd.4, mcd.4, mse.4, pcf.4, scd.4, sr.4, wt.4 - Files I have NOT yet modified: In src/share/man/man4: an.4, awi.4, ef.4, ppc.4, scsi.4 In src/share/man/man4/man4.i386: ar.4, dgb.4, labpc.4, rdp.4, sb.4, wd.4, wl.4 There are possibly more files which need update :-( Please have a look at my preliminary patch at http://people.freebsd.org/~yokota/man4update.diff Spend a bit of time to blush up the page for the driver which you are familiar with, and commit it. Especially all the references to hints. Must have taken quite some time. Thank you :) In the atkbd.4 manpage you changed a part in: The .Nm -driver accepts the following driver flags. They can be set either in the -kernel configuration file -(see -.Xr config 8 ) , -or else in the User Configuration Menu at boot time +driver accepts the following driver flags. +They can be set either in +.Pa /boot/device.hints , +or else from within the boot loader (see -.Xr boot 8 ) . +.Xr loader 8 ) . Same thing can also be found at psm.4, syscons.4, matcd.4 Since both the User Configuration menu can be used (provided that support has been compiled in the kernel) do you think you could mention both somehow? The User Config menu is completely disabled and isn't available in -CURRENT now. I strongly doubt it will ever come back. You see, we can now set/unset/edit device resource "hints" from the loader(8) prompt, thus, there is little need to have the old User Config menu compiled into the kernel. Please also have a look at my draft on the man page for device.hints(5). http://people.freebsd.org/~yokota/device.hints.5 The only thing which were available in the User Config, but is not in the loader(8) is the "Visual" User Config option. But, I expect such visual front-end to edit the device resource hints can be added to the loader, in one way or another.
