I've been working with FreeBSD for some five years now, although lately I do my programming on Solaris (SPARC), while trying to convince my colleagues to ditch Linux and go with FreeBSD. I've a keen interest in electronic music (I wouldn't go as far as to call myself an amateur musician) and I'm fascinated by Yamaha's mLAN protocol, that sends audio and MIDI over FireWire. Recently, I've communicated with someone at Yamaha Japan about it, and although it looks like the mLAN protocol itself, which controls musical equipment, is yet not attainable because of the expensive license, he encouraged me to develop a driver for the underlying AMP, short for the Audio and Music Transmission Protocol. So I've downloaded the specifications from the 1394 Trade Association's web site. I was wondering, am I the only one who is interested in this (in order not to duplicate effort)? Could you perhaps send me a link to any specs > or information you have on this as I have not heard of it before. General information about mLAN (almost a year old): http://www.yamaha.co.jp/english/mLAN/ Developer and licensing information (no specs though): http://www.yamaha.co.jp/tech/1394mLAN/english/ mLAN is a superset of the AMP (Audio and Music Transmission Protocol) and has to be licensed (at least at the moment). I would be interested in the AMP, and look at mLAN later, if/when it becomes an open standard. Pages with links to PDF specifications of the AMP: http://www.1394ta.org/Technology/Specifications/Descriptions/AMPV10.htm (Audio and Music Data Transmission Protocol V.1.0) http://www.1394ta.org/Technology/Specifications/Descriptions/AM10F1.htm (Enhancement to Audio and Music Data Transmission Protocol 1.0) http://www.1394ta.org/Technology/Specifications/Descriptions/TimeCode10Final.htm (SMPTE Time Code and Sample Count Transmission Protocol Ver.1.0) Hope this helps. - Peter To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-firewire" in the body of the message
