My boss has suddenly decided that she wants to scan a lot of our paperwork into the system... Don't need to worry about OCR at the current time, but I'l eventually (probably sooner than later) need to locate & read a 3-of-9 barcode off each page. She's been calling around to all of the local copier companies, and they've been more than happy to provide us with a "digital copier hooked up to an NT box" solution - yuck. I'm looking for a page scanner that meets the following: 1) Decent resolution. (at least 600x600) 2) Supported by FBSD / SANE 3) USB or SCSI 4) Able to hook >1 up to the computer & run several at the same time 5) Auto document feeder 6) Able to handle 800-1000 pages/day, divided by # of scanners Any ideas/experiences? I'd like to get two or three of whatever model I come up with, but most of the documentation I've found is rather cryptic as to what's supported... (Especially re: the ADF - almost nothing on these!) I wouldn't mind using the digital copier method if I can find one that doesn't require a Win box to talk to it. If I go this route, color capability is about 90% required, but that's negotiable. thanks - mike To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Tue Feb 13 11:31:16 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from Samizdat.uucom.com (samizdat.uucom.com [198.202.217.54]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B2DF737B491 for ; Tue, 13 Feb 2001 11:31:12 -0800 (PST) Received: (from cshenton@localhost) by Samizdat.uucom.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) id OAA24705; Tue, 13 Feb 2001 14:31:10 -0500 (EST) To: Mike Nowlin Cc: freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: scanner suggestions? I searched places like streetprices.com for scanner usb scsi cuz I wanted something that would work now (presumably scsi) and future (usb, if it's stable). Turned up an HP and an Epson model or two. I think both are available with ADF. The Epson 1640SU I got seems nice and works over USB (recent commits to USB config files for the model ID) tho I've hung/crashed my 4.2-STABLE box a couple times trying to do real high resolution; I suspect it's a USB immaturity thing. Seems to work fine over USB over more typical resolutions and bit-depths. Haven't tried the SCSI yet. Again, I don't have much to compare with, but "works for me" (tm). What swayed me to go Epson instead of HP: * various reviews comparing image quality for comparable models * price for comparable features * SANE comments indicating Epson has been *very* forthcoming in releasing doc to SANE developers To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Tue Feb 13 12:43: 6 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mirage.nlink.com.br (mirage.nlink.com.br [200.249.195.3]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 3F40837B491 for ; Tue, 13 Feb 2001 12:42:57 -0800 (PST) Received: (qmail 34510 invoked by uid 501); 13 Feb 2001 20:42:48 -0000 Received: from localhost (sendmail-bs@127.0.0.1) by localhost with SMTP; 13 Feb 2001 20:42:48 -0000 Date: Tue, 13 Feb 2001 18:42:48 -0200 (EDT) From: Paulo Fragoso To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Subject: Motherboard Dual Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: QUOTED-PRINTABLE Sender: owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi, We're looking for a motherboard dual for Pentium III FCPGA. In order to sell your publication on Amazon.com you will need one. But you need to publish your book in hard/soft shell first. Depending on the layout, Graphics and paper source you are going to use it can come costly. Then after you have publish it the conventional way you can go and apply for your ISBN number here online : http://www.bowker.com/standards/home/isbn/us/application.html or print out the form and post it. Ebooks will have either an ISBN or similar code to be identified in the future. Major Issues in the Implementation of the ISBN: PRINTING THE ISBN: When the number is either written or printed, it must be preceded by the letters "ISBN" and each part must be separated by a hyphen. read more about it here: http://www.bowker.com/standards/home/isbn/us/major.html =============================================================== 4 - Featured Ebooks: =============================================================== - LARKIN, by Debby Hunt - Larkin is the original story of a wealthy young girl named Shannon O'Larkin, and her relationship with an obsessive young man named Mike Sullivan. It is a rather convenient choice and in some instances " can cost more then you earn". To open an merchant account at your local bank is a tedious procedure and often you get turned down for reasons that might be out of reach (for the moment). That's where the on-line banks come into place, quick set-up, low cost maintenance, and a very attractive rate. But how much are you really earning? By a rate of, will say, 7% and a additional fee of $1.50 per sale you are not earning much if your product sales for around $10.00. The "real" earner is the BANK. So, do the math and shop around to get the best price. Download some ebooks about merchant accounts here: http://www.kdhbooks.com/ebooks/finance.htm and make sure that "YOU" are getting the most return. =============================================================== 6 - Ebook Publishing: =============================================================== Ebook publishing is a revolution on the Internet, the future of how we read books. If you can publish a website, you can publish an ebook. The advantage is that you have virtually no overhead cost, only your software and Internet connection. go here to download more info: http://www.kdhbooks.com/ebooks/publishing.htm If you are planning to publish an electronic magazine or/and ebooks than this ebook will help you out almost in every way possible. Kathryn: After 20 years in the writers business, how do you feel about ePublishing? Michael: In a word, re-born. It has re-invigorated me and, funnily enough, taken me full circle to what I wanted to do -- and started doing -- as a teenager. Writing books. It's a little strange, however, being both the author and the publisher. Now there's no barrier at all to being published but, with that, goes a layer of responsibility to ensure content is at the highest level. Having started my career as a newspaper reporter and sub-editor, I am used to editing my own copy, so it hasn't been too difficult a transition. When dealing with the traditional publishing world, many writers invest a lot of time, submitting their work to publishers, then play the waiting-game. While the rules are different with epublishing, there is still a considerable investment needed to be successful. When I finished my first ebook, I joked to a colleague that writing it was the easy part -- and I right (the hard part was learning and developing a workable ebook format, building the Web site and launching an ongoing marketing campaign). And that's true, even for authors who are handled by a third-party epublisher. Often, they will be responsible for not only providing the ebook in a professional, published format, but also arranging reviews, publicity and online marketing. ePublishing is, however, an exciting, evolving industry. It's a wonderful experience to be in complete control of your e-destiny. - please follow the link to the complete interview. http://www.kdhbooks.com/interview/michael_meanwell.htm or download as ebook (340 kb) http://www.kdhbooks.com/interview/michael_meanwell.exe ............................................................... =============================================================== 8 - Microsoft Reader Format =============================================================== Publish in Microsoft Reader (LIT) format. Should I expect any problems running FreeBSD 4.2-STABLE on these machines? My experience with the Gigabyte 7ZX mobo (VIA KT133) and Athlon/Duron 700-800MHz CPUs is very good, but now we are talking of higher clock frequencies and the new DDR memory. Just wondering. I didn't get a solution from the FreeBSD-community to solve this problems. Now I installed RedHat 7.0 Linux an it works. I think there is a bug in the FreeBSD-kernel, witch slows down my system, because three other OS's work without Problems (Linux, W98, Win2k). Here's the problem-description again: The system is very very slow, like on an old 386. Keyboard clicks are delayed, its like I work over a slow network. I have this problems since I updatet from an Athlon 500 to an Athlon Thunderbird 700. I use already the latest BIOS from Asus. dmesg: kernel output: Copyright (c) 1992-2000 The FreeBSD Project. I have very little evidence to go on since *nothing* is logged-- making me think it's hardware-related. The system becomes completely unresponsive from the network as well as the serial console. All I have that is somewhat unusual are some console messages related to the net card. This system has an FIC AZ-11 board with an AMD Duron 700 and 128 MB of Kingmax "TinyBGA" SDRAM. I am not overclocking the chip. The hard drive is a Western Digital WD205BA (20.5 GB 7200 RPM ATA-66). The network card is a Linksys LNE100TX 10/100 PCI. I have built a custom kernel with the following netcard support: device miibus # MII bus support device dc # DEC/Intel 21143 and various workalikes It shows up in dmesg as: The console messages that I saw were: Feb 16 09:13:59 gryphon /kernel: dc0: TX underrun -- increasing TX threshold Feb 16 09:14:11 gryphon /kernel: dc0: watchdog timeout Feb 16 09:56:20 gryphon /kernel: dc0: TX underrun -- increasing TX threshold I have never seen these before so I don't know if they are unusual or just normal. Could this be related to a lock-up or do I need to check elsewhere? I've been getting these messages for quite some time (IIRC since 4.0), but everything seems to work fine. I'm curious as to their origin though... -- Darren Shepard | dss@orst.edu To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Fri Feb 16 9: 7:17 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from web11603.mail.yahoo.com (web11603.mail.yahoo.com [216.136.172.55]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 2768337B65D for ; Fri, 16 Feb 2001 09:07:14 -0800 (PST) Message-ID: <20010216170714.26486.qmail@web11603.mail.yahoo.com> Received: from [207.105.240.164] by web11603.mail.yahoo.com; Fri, 16 Feb 2001 09:07:14 PST Date: Fri, 16 Feb 2001 09:07:14 -0800 (PST) From: Corris Randall Subject: Dell 2450/ PERC 3/si To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Sender: owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org All, I have a Dell 2450 with the embedded PERC 3/si RAID controller. Update: Nevermind! I discovered a physical environment problem. This system is in a 2U rackmount case and there was insufficient clearance for the CPU fan, so the proc was getting hot and shutting down. I will have to run it coverless until I can ventilate the top cover of the case. Fortunately it's on the top of the stack in the rack. :) Thanks anyway, Eric Eric A.
