Is there a way to get burncd to -useinfo the way cdrecord can? 2. Is there a way to get cdrecord to use an atapi cd-rw drive? 3. Is there a way to clone an audio cd on an atapi cd-rw drive that preserves the disk id and track info? cdda2wav from the cdrecord port can read an atapi drive, but seems to be an entirely different code base than cdrecord itself. I can write audio just fine with burncd, but don't see a way to preserve the extra data from the original cd that allows cddb to return artist/disk/track info. I have already gone through the problems with the onboard RAID card not having drivers in STABLE. I have found a solution that I will share with the list: The hot-swap backplane in these 5500's is compatible with the Dell Poweredge RAID controller PERC/DC made by american megatrends, which is supported by the amr driver. Now, the next problem with this 5500 is the network adapter, it is the standard onboard adapter which is detected as a pcn card, AMD Am79C79x PCI 10/100 NICs. After the kernel and the pcn driver are loaded the nic card seems to get turned off. No link light at either end. Has anyone else experienced anything similar to this problem? It is not a hardware problem (maybe) since linux boots up and is able to detect and use the network adapter. Last question: I noticed in the LINT config file that this type of adapter used to be handled by the lnc driver, is there a way to disable the pcn driver in the install floppies so that I can find out if the lnc driver will work? BTW, I have been browsing the archives and reading a little material -- in particular, the article (in German) on PPPoE by Udo Erdelhoff. Yet I am a little confused :-) I would like to switch to ADSL for my home connection, and I am going to realize a small LAN at home (two 'puters, to begin with). My FreeBSD box should work as firewall/gateway and as... my beloved bloat^H^H^H^Hworkstation platform. An interesting Italian ADSL ISP utilizes "PPP over ATM". I would like to learn more on this (as opposed to PPPoE) in conjunction with FreeBSD, as well as learning on possible/recommended ADSL modems (or even routers) for this specific (?) case. The modem Alcatel Speed Touch Home is reported to work. However, this ISP also states that "Linux/Unix will only work with a router; Linux/Unix will work with no ADSL modem -- neither USB link nor Ethernet" [sic]. I have read the cheat sheet at http://www.mostgraveconcern/freebsd/dsl.html, and I seem to understand that an ADSL modem such as Alcatel Speed touch home and a [good] supported network card (Intel Etherexpress Pro 100 ?) should do the job. I also seem to understand that problems do arise for USB modems, eg 3Com dual link, as reported in a recent thread. Am I missing something? Thanks for any pointers, suggestions, recommendations. And apologies for the dumb/newbieish questions. -- Salvo To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Thu Mar 22 14:56: 2 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mass.dis.org (mass.dis.org [216.240.45.41]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D194437B719 for ; Thu, 22 Mar 2001 14:55:59 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from msmith@mass.dis.org) Received: from mass.dis.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by mass.dis.org (8.11.2/8.11.2) with ESMTP id f2MMsws02971; Thu, 22 Mar 2001 14:54:59 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from msmith@mass.dis.org) Message-Id: <200103222254.f2MMsws02971@mass.dis.org> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.1.1 10/15/1999 To: Salvo Bartolotta Cc: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Subject: Re: ADSL "modems" & ADSL (PPP over ATM) In-reply-to: Your message of "Thu, 22 Mar 2001 23:49:33 +0100." <985301373.3aba817d4fa9a@webmail.neomedia.it> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Date: Thu, 22 Mar 2001 14:54:58 -0800 From: Mike Smith Sender: owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > The modem Alcatel Speed Touch Home is reported to work. I've written a howto for Mxstream and FreeBSD. Perhaps there are some pointers in there that you can use. http://kjkoster.org/index.jsp?page=content/adsl.jsp KPN have added a dashboard of some sort that you need to log into to get onto the Internet. This is likely to be different for your ISP. Alcatel's USB speedtouch modems are not likely to work with FreeBSD, unless someone (Alcatel? :) writes a driver for them. Same thing is happening to me now, but it seems to be directly related to a Barracuda SE SCSI disk! I apologize if this has been discussed/solved previously, but I can't find any more in the archives about it and I'm at a dead end now. The 6BXU has an onboard Adaptec 7890/91, currently I have one Seagate ST39173N 9 gig SE Ultra Barracuda hanging off it. 20MB/s jobby. I have 4.2 Rel installed from CD on a Quantum 6.4 Fireball IDE and all is well without the Barracuda in play on the generic kernel. Take the drive off the cable or disable the onboard SCSI in the bios and it boots up and acts normal. Reenable the Barracuda and no matter what is enabled/disabled in the boot config or the MB or SCSI bios and it hangs at isa_probe_children in boot -v. The marked out devs are displayed as disabled and then it hangs at isa_probe_children, for at least an hour, haven't tried longer yet. Is this issue currently under investigation? Any fixes or workarounds known? I did have this disk online and in use under 3.51 Rel as a data drive, but after upgrading via CD to 4.2 (I had to remove it for the install, same hang) no matter what I do I can't boot the box up past that isa_probe_children point. I'm running the same MB on a 3.3 box (I know, I need to upgrade, that's what THIS box is for) with both LVD and SE drives without problems, well none that are related to FBSD anyway :) Are there any other lists to which this should also be posted? How are you?
I have run into some question running FreeBSD.

I am running FreeBSD 4.1.1 on a Tyan board what has ServerWorks ServerSet III HE-SL chipset.
I am not sure if FreeBSD 4.1.1 recognize ServerSet III HE-SL chipset.
Followings are the messages regarding PCI bud on the boot up.

<----------------------------------------------->
pcib0 :  on motherboard.
pci0 :  on pcib0
pcib4 :  at device 0.1 on pci0
pci1 :  on pcib4
pci1 :  at 0.0
pci0 :   at device 15.0 on pci0
isa0 :  on isab0
.
.
.
pcib1 :  on motherboard
pci2 :  on pcib1
tio0 : <3Com 3c985-SX Gigabit Ethernet> mem 0xfebfc00-0xfebfffff irq 9 at device 2.0 on pci2
tio0 : Ethernet address : 00:60:08:a1:e4
pcib2 :  on motherboard
pci3 :  on pcib2
pcib3 :  on motherboard
pci4 :  on pcib3
<------------------------------------------------>

ServerSet III HE-SL use following 3 chips.
NB6576 : north bridge
SB7440 : south bridge
NB6555 : PCI bus bridge

As you can see from above messages, ServerWorks chips are correctly detected. (vendor=1166)
However, only 2 chips are detected. In addition, pcib1 is .
I suspect that FreeBSD detects HE-SL chipset as LE chipset that uses only 2 chips (NB6635 and IB6566).

Does FreeBSD 4.1.1 detects ServerWorks III HE-SL chipset?
If FreeBSD does not confuse HE-SL with LE, does FreeBSD really utilize full capacity of HE-SL chipset?

Please help me with this.
Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

-James Kwon

It uses standard CL2 DIMM memory and is supported by the amr driver. As for a tape drive, I use the HP Surestore DDS3 6 tape changer. If you want something more reliable than DDS, which is probably one of the more reliable helical scan tape drives, look into DLT drives. They can get expensive, but they are much more reliable than DDS. One last thing. The Asus A7V has some wierdness with the ata driver in freebsd. I would not recommend using it in a server role if you were going to run ata drives on it - for now, until the ata driver problem is fixed. I want to use at least RAID1 mirroring for some redundancy. I strongly recommend IBM deskstar drives with Promise IDE controlers. I have had great experience with those. They are fairly cheap and have great performance. If you need any sort of RAID, looks into 3ware ide raid cards (http://www.3ware.com/). At the time I had to use some of the PAO stuff to get the pcmcia enet to work, but everything else seemed to work fine. I just bought a new disk, and figured i'd install 4.2. The ata driver does not seem to live happily with the disk controller, however. and even the floppy driver seems to be having a problem (fdc0: cannot reserve I/O port range). The ata driver says: atapci0: port 0xfcf0-0xfcff,0x374-0x377,0x170-0x177 ,0x2f4-0x3f7,0x1f0-0x1f7 at device 18.1 on pci0 atapci0: Busmastering DMA not supported ata2: at 0x1f0 on atapci0 ata2: unable to allocate interrupt device_probe_and_attach: ata2 attach returned 6 ata3: at 0x170 on atapci0 ata3: unable to allocate interrupt device_probe_and_attach: ata3 attach returned 6 later on, when the sysinstall menu comes up and i try to allocate disk space it naturally tells me that there are no disks. the old kernel wd driver used to say: wdc0: at 0x1f0-0x1f7 irq 14 on isa wd0: 3102MB 96354432 sectors), 6304 cyls, 16 heads, 63 S/t, 512 B/s wdc1 at 0x170-0x177 irq 15 on isa wdc1: unit 0 (atapi): , removable, accel, dma, ior I have tried enabling and disabling PNP in the bios, and using auto/user config for the disks. all combinations seem to yield the same results - it cant init the disk controllers. Why does it think it has ata2 and 3 instead of 0 and 1 like the old wd driver did? I have another FreeBSD system that I use as a workstation. I used it to build a kernel for the boot flop that would stop in the fd driver ( while(1) i++; makes an effective stopper) so that I could see the ata driver messages. If anybody has any fixes or suggestions, I could implement them and test them without any problem. If anyone has any answers or ideas, please email me directly, since I haven't subscribed to all the mailling lists. thanks, ron.
