I've got the onboard promise controller set not to use the raid0 function but to act as a normal ata100 controller just like the via controller next to it. I'm using a 3ware controller as the main drive controller. There seem to be problems with both onboard controllers however. With or without a drive connected to the VIA controller, the system hangs for 40 seconds when it reaches that point in the boot process. When I connect any drive to the promise controller, The system finds the controller and drive, but then locks up after it detects the floppy controller. Has anyone seen this before? Are there problems with this board's onboard controllers? Or do I have a bad board? The system has 512 meg of ram, and is running an athlon gigahertz processor at 266 FSB. Thanks in advance. No. Until some ADSL chipset maker releases their microcode (or at least their chipset programming information) in any form suitable for writing open source driver. That's why I told you to look at the ROM option, perhaps it would let you choose Mylex card. This time I did not get the timeout message for the fxp1 device (82558). If I remember correctly the message was Kernel: fxp1 timeout SCB. It just kept scrolling off the screen in the late stages of the boot, after the loader had already recognized it. I just ran another tape test against NFS mounted FS's and only got one timeout at the end of the tape. It seemed to work ok on the 82558 (fxp1). Doing it again to test some more. thanks, Mike Tancsa wrote: > > At 12:44 AM 7/18/2001 -0700, Craig Shaver wrote: > >Running in 100baseT. The handbook mentions AIC-789x chips, which does cover the 7892 on the 29160, but you're right, it doesn't mention the 29160. My problem is that whenever I insert a PCMCIA card, my system completely freezes. If I boot with a card inserted it will stop after some messages about the parallel port, in this case if I press Ctrl+Alt+Del it will halt the system. This happens with any card in any slot. Attached are the verbose messages generated by the GENERIC kernel. ===== ************************************************************ This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. If you wanted to try to keep the two unified, there are macros in a few of my drivers that hide these. Has the ida driver been "fixed" yet, in regards to EISA controllers (the Compaq Smart 2/E in particular)? It doesn't appear so as of 4.3-RELEASE, which identifies the controller on boot up, and then promptly panics :( An alternative I guess, is to use the old 3.x (non-newbus) driver ... but how? Not sure if this applies to your EISA card, but I do have a PCI version of that card in a ProLiant 1500. It takes a little "jockeying" around to make the ida driver work, but it does work fine. Have you tried installing FreeBSD similarly to the way you would with the PCI controller? With my controller before I learned the tricks to make it work, it would panic at that point as well, because Compaq's ultimate wisdom, they use the same vector addresses for the SMART 2/x controllers as the rest of the world uses for a standard IDE controller. Try doing an install treating it like the PCI version, and see if that works. It's worth a shot, right?
