I'm looking at picking up one of these little guys and turning it into a workstation. Also, if you're running this machine (or the rackmount version), what SCSI controller are you using, if any? I've looked at the HP NetRaid controllers that they recommend, and frankly, I'm getting the idea that they don't want me to buy one! *grins* Since HP generally OEMs things like this from the likes of Adaptec, AMI and Mylex... I'm hoping that someone out there is running one of these cards with the hot swappable backplane that's standard on this model. --- Andy To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Sun Jul 29 10:25:53 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from peer1-va.mail.home.com (ldap1-va.mail.home.com [65.14.223.42]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6F2EE37B401 for ; Sun, 29 Jul 2001 10:25:51 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from pnmurphy1@home.com) Received: from home.com ([24.150.36.162]) by peer1-va.mail.home.com (InterMail vM.4.01.03.20 201-229-121-120-20010223) with ESMTP id <20010729172550.TFZG14912.peer1-va.mail.home.com@home.com>; Sun, 29 Jul 2001 10:25:50 -0700 Message-ID: <3B64471E.6588EFC0@home.com> Date: Sun, 29 Jul 2001 13:25:50 -0400 From: Paul Murphy X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.77 [en] (X11; U; FreeBSD 4.3-STABLE i386) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: "Andrew C. I.e. does it run continously, or does it drop back to stop-and-go mode? I can't get my DLT4000 to stream properly with compression enabled. I have no idea why. The disk delivers 8+ MB/s, disk and tape are on different SCSI buses. I dump(8) to a holding partition and transfer the complete archive from there to tape. It's apparently a non-standard I2O device, and Promise > never responded when asked for documentation or sample hardware to work > with. It is probably just my ignorance, but I thought I20 was for devices which are adaptors (eg: a SCSI-like adaptor, or a network-like adaptor). The Promise UltraTrak is a disk array which connects via the SCSI bus, so the any I20 portion would be dealing with the SCSI adaptor, for which I plan to use an Adaptec 2940UW or somesuch which is well supported by FreeBSD. The UltraTrak TX4/8 are not adaptors in the same sense as all of the other Promise products, which are PCI devices. http://www.promise.com/Products/Default.htm Of course I can totally see Promise not being cooperative - that's the way it goes. Failing this I will just get an Arena IDE RAID array, which is the same sort of thing, but which I already have working with FreeBSD (it's just more expensive and slower). Since you said you were using multiple controllers, you're probably limited by a 32-bit/33MHz (132MB/sec) PCI bus, so get a faster bus. Eg, get a server with a 64-bit and/or a 66MHz bus. Afterwards, when I start using the box [logging in, etc] I get the following: ad4s1a: UDMA ICRC error reading fsbn 68463183 of 34231560-34231687 (ad4s1 bn 68463183; cn 7494 tn 87 sn 12) retrying ad4s1a: UDMA ICRC error reading fsbn 68457535 of 34228736-34228815 (ad4s1 bn 68457535; cn 7493 tn 142 sn 34) retrying ad4s1a: UDMA ICRC error reading fsbn 27382831 of 13691384-13691447 (ad4s1 bn 27382831; cn 2997 tn 83 sn 7) retrying ad4s1a: UDMA ICRC error reading fsbn 87566783 of 43783360-43783439 (ad4s1 bn 87566783; cn 9585 tn 123 sn 59) retrying ad4s1a: UDMA ICRC error reading fsbn 109594399 of 54797168-54797223 (ad4s1 bn 109594399; cn 11997 tn 28 sn 40) retrying so on and so forth.. ad4s1a: UDMA ICRC error reading fsbn 282735839 of 141367888-141368143 (ad4s1 bn 282735839; cn 30950 tn 120 sn 29) falling back to PIO mode and the drive falls into PIO mode. I haven't found any hard evidence of known issues like this while doing web research, but I've noticed people with similar problems and different controller cards. I can print with this device just fine from Windows hosts (Win 98, NT 4.0, and Win 2000), yet not from my 4.3-RELEASE host. My printer is an HP LaserJet 4L. I've been happily using my SMC7004BR as an LPR print server (to this HP LaserJet 4L) from NT 4.0, Windows 98, and Win 2000. Now, however, I've just set up a FreeBSD (4.3-RELEASE) box, and am trying to print from it. UNIX text files *sometimes* print in MS-DOS fashion (i.e. like this: This is the first line. This is the second line. Third line. ), and other times don't print at all. PostScript files translated by Ghostscript either cause nothing to happen, or result in all-blank pages being printed. I have the latest firmware installed, version 1.93e. If anyone is successfully using the print server functionality of their SMC7004BR from their FreeBSD box, please let me know. Here are my printcap and input filter. "printhost" is an alias for my SMC7004BR, my FreeBSD box is an IBM ThinkPad 600 Type 2645-51U, my network card is a Xircom XE2000, and to my knowledge I'm experiencing no other network problems. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: /etc/printcap (excerpt) :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: lj|laserjet|ljet4|hplj|hplj4l|lp|Hewlett Packard LaserJet 4L:\ :lp=:rm=printhost:rp=lp:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lj:\ if=/usr/local/libexec/hpif :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: /usr/local/libexec/hpif (excerpt) :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: if [ "$first_two_chars" = "%!" ]; then exec 3>&1 1>&2 /usr/local/bin/gs -dSAFER -dNOPAUSE -q -sDEVICE=ljet4 \ -sOutputFile=/dev/fd/3 - && exit 0 /usr/local/bin/gs -dSAFER -dNOPAUSE -q -sDEVICE=ljet4 \ -sOutputFile=- - && exit 0 else echo $first_line && cat && printf "\033&l0H" && exit 0 fi Could timing be an issue? I saw in the change history for the next-to- most-recent firmware revision of this device the vague note, "Enlarge timeout for print server to solve some printing problems." As I mentioned, though, I have the latest revision of this firmware, 1.93e. Typically, you go wider and faster. A lot of controllers don't have the internal memory bandwidth to do more than about 80 or so; they are OK or even good at maximising the performance of their disks up to that point, but run out of puff beyond it. Intel recently released a new I/O chipset based on a very fast (733MHz) StrongArm core; it has two 64/66MHz PCI bridges and a decent memory interface. I'd guess that we'll see controllers using this appearing in a year or so, and based on the numbers I ran on this part a while back, they ought to be able to sustain something around 300MB/sec out of it. This is all vapour of course; I am only guessing that these parts will hit the mainstream RAID controller market. -- ... every activity meets with opposition, everyone who acts has his rivals and unfortunately opponents also.
