It would be great to gather informations and do a real FAQ about this, as this question is being asked 2x/weeks. So, if you want, i can do such a document. But, i will need informations (true informations) about being a cvsup mirror, ftp and web. Just send revelant informations to reel@freebsd-fr.org. Lots, lots, lots, lots, and so on. Oh, you wanted a non-facetious answer? OK. The current incarnation of cvsup3/ftp5 is a 1-GHz Pentium III server running 4.4. It has a full GByte of RAM, and is using about 100 MBytes of swap space. It is limited to 24 cvsup clients, 4 rsync clients, and 100 ftp clients (today's average 17, max 41). Network utilization averages 4 Mbit/s (most of which is FTP); peaks are up around 12 Mbit/s. You'll find that there are some obnoxious people (or client programs) out there which will waste lots of process slots by opening half a dozen connections simultaneously; I deny access to those users. -GAWollman To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hubs" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hubs Mon Oct 1 10:58: 9 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-hubs@freebsd.org Received: from lurza.secnetix.de (lurza.secnetix.de [212.66.1.130]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9E89B37B406 for ; Mon, 1 Oct 2001 10:54:40 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from olli@localhost) by lurza.secnetix.de (8.9.3/8.9.3) id TAA35135 for hubs@FreeBSD.ORG; Mon, 1 Oct 2001 19:54:39 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from oliver.fromme@secnetix.de) From: Oliver Fromme Message-Id: <200110011754.TAA35135@lurza.secnetix.de> Subject: Re: little doubt To: hubs@FreeBSD.ORG Date: Mon, 1 Oct 2001 19:54:39 +0200 (CEST) Reply-To: hubs@FreeBSD.ORG In-Reply-To: <200110011738.f91Hc1T53045@khavrinen.lcs.mit.edu> from "Garrett Wollman" at Oct 01, 2001 01:38:01 PM X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.5 PL3] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Sender: owner-freebsd-hubs@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi, Garrett Wollman wrote: > At present all 10 ftp clients are retrieveing CD images or idle. > You'll find that there are some obnoxious people (or client programs) > out there which will waste lots of process slots by opening half a > dozen connections simultaneously; I deny access to those users. Maybe this is a dumb question, but how do you do that? I haven't found a way to automatically deny access to clients that try to use multiple connections at once. (BTW, using lukemftpd here.) If you want to become a official mirror, and carry everything, you can probably sync from ftp-master.FreeBSD.org. Either way, the friendly people on hubs@FreeBSD.org (Cc'd) can probably help you out, either by telling you a host you can rsync from closer to you than ftp.FreeBSD.org, or give you access to ftp-master. best regards /Jesper -- Jesper Skriver, jesper(at)skriver(dot)dk - CCIE #5456 Work: Network manager @ AS3292 (Tele Danmark DataNetworks) Private: FreeBSD committer @ AS2109 (A much smaller network ;-) One Unix to rule them all, One Resolver to find them, One IP to bring them all and in the zone to bind them. It's not clear that adding additional public mirrors would gain much of anything unless we can find a way to get people to use the higher-numbered ones automatically. There are presently 13 full public mirrors, of which 5 are connected via Internet2. Ours (ftp5) is available for rsync access, and is updated from ftp-master every six hours. -GAWollman To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hubs" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hubs Wed Oct 3 13:53:55 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-hubs@freebsd.org Received: from owlstation.cslab.vt.edu (owlstation.cslab.vt.edu [198.82.184.32]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B703537B401 for ; Wed, 3 Oct 2001 13:53:50 -0700 (PDT) Received: from workstation-95.cslab.vt.edu (root@workstation-95.cslab.vt.edu [198.82.184.95]) by owlstation.cslab.vt.edu (8.11.6/8.11.5) with ESMTP id f93KrcR66695 for ; Wed, 3 Oct 2001 16:53:39 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from wkurdzio@cslab.vt.edu) Received: from workstation-95.cslab.vt.edu (wkurdzio@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by workstation-95.cslab.vt.edu (8.12.0/8.12.0/Debian -5) with ESMTP id f93KrgqY009137 for ; Wed, 3 Oct 2001 16:53:43 -0400 Received: (from wkurdzio@localhost) by workstation-95.cslab.vt.edu (8.12.0/8.12.0/Debian -5) id f93Krefw009135; Wed, 3 Oct 2001 16:53:40 -0400 X-Authentication-Warning: workstation-95.cslab.vt.edu: wkurdzio set sender to wkurdzio@cslab.vt.edu using -f Subject: ftp3 outage From: Wes Kurdziolek To: freebsd-hubs@freebsd.org Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="=-j5Y1AjpI8m6N1rSepNQB" X-Mailer: Evolution/0.13 (Preview Release) Date: 03 Oct 2001 16:53:40 -0400 Message-Id: <1002142420.7895.65.camel@workstation-95> Mime-Version: 1.0 Sender: owner-freebsd-hubs@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org --=-j5Y1AjpI8m6N1rSepNQB Content-Type: text/plain Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable ftp3 will be down for the rest of today and probably most of tomorrow while it undergoes a major software upgrade which will require re-syncing the FreeBSD mirror and all its other mirrors.
