The first time the cable was not connected to the card, the second time the cable was faulty. What is happening below is that i4b is trying to open the datalink to the exchange, the SETUP message is sent, but no reply is received -- the reason for this is typically, in my experience, a faulty or missing cable. Example config for multichannel use can be found in /usr/share/examples/ppp/ppp.conf.isdn and .../isdnd.rc. Basically, to use userland ppp with isdn, you configure isdnd.rc with usrdevicename=rbch entries, and ppp.conf with "set speed sync" and setting the dial/login/logout/hangup scripts to empty. Multilink is achieved with "set mrru 1500" + "set mru 1504" + "clone 1,2". It's all pretty obvious when you look at the configuration sample.
