We recently obtained a license to provide internet services to the teeming internet population in the southern states of Nigeria (the most populous African nation). We have been putting heads together to get this business started up bearing in mind the problems we face here in Nigeria. The most embarassing and frustrating is that we have only one national carrier that belongs to the federal government, which monopoly has made it to become a monster to deal with. The worst of all the government allowed it to use it's internet gateway to deploy unlimited internet services to nigerians at an outrageously low price per year (half of what the private operators charge). Some of us that what to be new entrants in the business have been watching with keen interest at this development. We had thought of deploying this service through wireless using a satellite link, thereby bypassing the national carrier and its problems, the cost alone may not be affordable to our people bearing in mind the per capita income. We seek assistance in deploying dial-up cost effective solutions to our people to benefit from the dividends of our democracy and the huge opportunities of the internet. Our consortium is made up hard working professionals who have made it in our choosen careers. This is our new baby and WE INTEND TO MAKE IT WORK. ASSIST US WITH THIS DREAM We remain ever grateful for your time. My > FreeBSD workstation and all Windoze clients seem to work extremely fast. Hmmm, well if they are all connected with the same NIC to the same HUB/Switch then you should look at cables and settings... If how ever you have different NICs or they are on a different HUB/Switch then you need to look at things like duplex settings, media and other things that *should* be auto sensing... Some NICs are not compatible with some HUBs, this is all because there is no real standard for how NICs should be programed... Of cause if everything is the same brand then unless this is some strange software problem its time to start switching cables around... Although it seems silly that its cabling to a lot of people, I have seen things like this caused by cable too close to high voltage and other magnetic interference, also badly made cables are out there... I am interested to see what this ends up being... Good luck! You can define a filter program in sendmail (Milter), so each incoming email will be parsed on the fly. If you build sendmail from the ports, add in files/site.config.m4 APPENDDEF(`confCCOPTS', `-D_FFR_MILTER=1')" in your mc file add: define(`_FFR_MILTER',1) INPUT_MAIL_FILTER(`noattach', `S=local:/var/run/noattach, F=T')dnl But you still need a program (like noattach) to parse the attachments. There should be a perl module somewhere, for this interface. (Or compile your own) For local delivery its much more easy, you can use any program as the local mailer. kind regards Dirk - Dirk Meyer, Im Grund 4, 34317 Habichtswald, Germany - Tel. +49-5606-6512 - Tel. +49-177-6923813 To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isp Tue Jan 23 8:31:36 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mail.tcworks.net (mail.tcworks.net [216.61.218.4]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8508837B401 for ; Tue, 23 Jan 2001 08:31:17 -0800 (PST) Received: from tcworks.net (stuck.sticky.org [216.61.218.6]) by mail.tcworks.net (8.10.2/8.10.2) with ESMTP id f0NGRVi21355; Tue, 23 Jan 2001 10:27:33 -0600 (CST) Message-ID: <3A6DB20D.55BEB874@tcworks.net> Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2001 10:32:13 -0600 From: Chris Cook X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.72 [en] (X11; I; Linux 2.2.12 i386) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: mmason@nunanet.com Cc: heckfordj@psi-domain.co.uk, freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: sendmail rulesets References: <20010123092722.A234@freefire.psi-domain.co.uk> <3A6DB0D2.5543A679@nunanet.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org I have been trying to impliment that check subject rule for use on the Snow White virus without any luck. I don't think you will find anything that can beat it: redundant power supplies, up to two CPUs, 133mhz FSB, 64bit PCI, three hotswap SCSI bays and three more can be added, and redundant and hotswap fans. The fans are particularly nice. The x340 doesn't use CPU fans, but an air-flow tunnel over the CPUs, which a full-size hostswap fan at each end (push, pull arragement). If one of these fans fails, the other speeds up, with no software intervention required. Of course, IBM ServeRAID cards aren't supported by FreeBSD, so I use a Mylex AccelRAID 352 in it. IBM owns Myles now, so IBM has no problem with this. The hotswap bays support SAF-TE, so rebuilding of failed drives is automatic too. There are plenty of generic solutions around that take regular MBs which offer you the maximum flexibility. Whats good to use today may not be true tomorrow, so you need to keep your options open in an environment like freebsd. If it's definitely a file, try: rm del\\\ (the trailing space is so that the shell doesn't continue the line after you hit enter) Worked for me with a test file I just did. You could also do "rm del*" if there are no other files starting with "del" in that directory... That worked just fine, used a fwd rule to forward all traffic to localhost, etc. Now I have more of a problem though. I have a gateway at 30.30.30.1 and a proxy server at 20.20.20.1. Both have public interfaces and are not connected through any sort of private network. What I need to do is to forward all traffic on port 80 of the gateway 30.30.30.1 (thus allowing for transparent caching for people behind it) to the proxy server 20.20.20.1. I made the following rule (where 10.10.0.0/16 is the gateway's:internal network) /sbin/ipfw add fwd 20.20.20.1 tcp from 10.10.0.0/16 to any 80 and it doesn't work. packets don't get directed to 20.20.20.1, they just go where they are supposed to. If I run squid locally and forward to localhost, it does fine (its just that its a P130 with 800M hdd, kinda stupid to run squid on it) The kernel is compiled with all necessary options. (since nat works, and forwarding to localhost works) Also the manual says that if you fwd to an IP that is further than one hop away, the routing table will be used to relay the packet. host 20.20.20.1 is fully accessible! Can someone tell me what I can do about this, or possibly suggest an alternative forwarding solution? Thanks all! _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Any of the external processes to Squid should spread themselves across the multiple processors, such as the dnsserver helpers (if you use them) or any external authenticators, or external redirectors. You will have to use the development version of Squid 2.4 if you want to split the load up any more, since it uses a separate 'diskd' process for each cache directory you have, so each of those processes do the work of transferring information in/out of the cache stores and managing the stores themselves. If the majority of your Squid load is caused by your use of a lot of ACLs or even just a lot of regular expressions in your ACLs, I don't think there is much you can do to help spread that load at this time. One solution for that might be to try to do the same work that the ACLs are doing in external redirector or authentication processes, if the particular ACLs would lend themselves to doing so. Other than that, I think you would have to compile squid with thread support, but I'm not sure if FreeBSD would spread those threads among multiple processors yet (FreeBSD 5 maybe?). -- Chris Dillon - cdillon@wolves.k12.mo.us - cdillon@inter-linc.net FreeBSD: The fastest and most stable server OS on the planet. And 64bit cards too. Propietary layouts offer more features. For instance, IBM include light guide diagnostics on their motherboards. No else offers that. Besides, the motherboard is part of the package. You can't buy a generic chassis, and a generic motherboard, and get anything as tightly integrated as IBM eServer x340. For instance, if a CPU fan dies on your generic motherboard, the best you can hope for is for the CPU to clock down. And you will have to power the server down to replace the CPU fan. But with a integrated motherboard/chassis combo like the x340, no problem. There is no clock down required, and all fans are hot-pluggable. http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/eserver/xseries/x340.html Tom To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isp Wed Jan 24 21:20:31 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from smtp5.mail.yahoo.com (smtp5.mail.yahoo.com [128.11.69.102]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 2519337B401 for ; Wed, 24 Jan 2001 21:20:14 -0800 (PST) Received: from d83b5f53.dsl.flashcom.net (HELO home) (216.59.95.83) by smtp.mail.vip.suc.yahoo.com with SMTP; 25 Jan 2001 05:20:12 -0000 X-Apparently-From: Message-ID: <007d01c0868d$fc302be0$0201a8c0@flashcom.com> From: "Anthony" To: Subject: ipfw port translation Date: Thu, 25 Jan 2001 00:16:33 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="----=_NextPart_000_007A_01C08664.12E4A5C0" X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.50.4133.2400 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.50.4133.2400 Sender: owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_007A_01C08664.12E4A5C0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Hey, Another squid/ipfw/caching related question. If you are willing to sacrifice flexibility and can be assured that all of these wonderful "features" are fully functional under FreeBSD..... I always avoid MBs that are "part of the package". Getting locked into a MB these days is not a good thing. > For instance, if a CPU fan dies on your generic motherboard, the best >you can hope for is for the CPU to clock down. And you will have to power >the server down to replace the CPU fan. But with a integrated >motherboard/chassis combo like the x340, no problem. There is no clock >down required, and all fans are hot-pluggable. All good, but not worth the price. You'll be upgrading before your components wear out. Being down for a few minutes every 6 months is not the end of the world. And if you do routine maintenance like you should (ie replace fans every few months, etc) you wont have that problem and you will save tens of thousands a year. Infrequent downtime is part of the internet experience, take advantage of it for your own financial gain. Even if you are up 100% of the time, your upstream will be down now and then...there is no 100% in todays world. Your customers blame you when your upstream is down or uunet is flapping anyway. there are good reasons (sometimes) to pay a lot more. If you are spending other peoples money, then you have a good case. Its easy to say A is better than B. But if you are spending your own, its a different ballgame. You make small trade-offs and buy yourself a nice gift at the end of the year with the savings. :-) Dennis ------------------------------------------------------------ Go GIANTS. I have a problem with E-mail server on Qmail 1.03 (with Sendmail I have such problem too). It work on FreeBSD 3.3 in three subnet"s and serve three domain"s with one 100 Mb interface card. This is a picture of subnet"s: | Internet, PPP to Cisco router __________ |Firewall| - default router ---------- | Router have only external IP | First subnet, external IP"s (mask 0xffffffc0) ----------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------- | | Three IP | | client PC"s, second subnet, internal IP"s | on server third subnet | | (mask 0xfffffff0) | (mask 0xffffff00) | __________ ___________ __________ | N1 | | Server | | N2 | ---------- ----------- ---------- On this server work Squid proxy and work very well for all IP"s. But when client connect to server for E-mail (25 or 110 ports) from internal IP"s, he must wait from 2 to 5 minutes to connect. This problem is for local connect (from server console) too. Connection from external IP"s is fine (some second"s maximum). Why so? I can"t find answer. Thank you for your help! But it is all hardware goodies, and requires no software support. For instance, when a fan on one of the CPU assembly dies, and the one on the other end speeds up, and a fan fail light appears on the front of the unit, that is 100% hardware. This sounds like your SMTP server / POP server is trying to use either DNS or ident to learn about the remote host/user. Just grab the source from www.sendmail.org and build and install per the instructions. It will work with a 8.9 cf file but some of the new anti-spam features will require building a new one. That's an extra step though, it won't trash your current .cf when you run build install. Would like to recreate the environment as needed. I see two options: 1) Scripting a jail creation and required library/scripts creation program and running it for each new jail we wish to create. 2) Create a "template" Jail environment, then copy and rename the directory tree, and add additional jail lines to the rc.local rc.conf to IP them and start them on reboot. Any reason why #2 should not work, even to the point where if ports were installed in the jail'ed environment, they could be recreated in their installed state. The easiest but most time consuming would be to simply script everything (step 1). Enter the new IP address, user information, and have it go through the jail creation, port installation, rc. configuration and so forth, but we are talkig significant time and server resources(or more importantly disk access time) to accomplish this. Any thoughts or idea on this matter would be appreciated. Send me a URL when the product's ready.... we're always looking for new vendors. :) Doug To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message
