Replying to my own post is probably justified when I've been talking rubbish :) I just set the runtime to use rmiregistry and everything works. So it's defintely a cockup in my Lookup/discovery/multicast setup. Which is annoying, but I was more keen to play with JavaSpaces than Jini so I'd class that a 'fix'.
