The file claims it is for FreeBSD 4.3. I don't doubt it but it doesn't work on the 4.3 RELEASE because it requires newer version of libgtk (libgtk-1.2.so.9) than the one which comes with the RELEASE. I think there are many people who install FreeBSD from CDROMS distributed by WindRiver and who want to use it as it is until the new RELEASE is out. I would like to ask you to compile those new versions of Mozilla you want to put on the mozilla.org web site against the RELEASE and let those who want to be allways up to date to use what's in the FreeBSD ports collection. I think that a way to achieve an acceptable solution to most people without creating a UNIX version of the dll hell from Windows (which is in essence this very same problem plus a few more due to lack of access controlls on Win9x) would be to compile a statically linked version of Mozilla (Netscape has always been done that way since it used Motif). This means however that the binary will be huge. But you have to live with that, or you have to compile software on the box that you plan to run it on. On UNIX, it is not simply download and click to run it, because we cannot count on the APIs and ABIs not changing for say three years like between win95 and 98. Your solution would be a very partial one and would not solve anything. -- Regards: Szilveszter ADAM Szeged University Szeged Hungary To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mozilla" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mozilla Fri Jun 22 3:54:27 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-mozilla@freebsd.org Received: from daemon.kr.FreeBSD.org (daemon.kr.freebsd.org [211.176.62.31]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 98A2337B403 for ; Fri, 22 Jun 2001 03:54:24 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from cjh@kr.FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from gradius.wdb.co.kr (daemon [211.176.62.31]) by daemon.kr.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 34A9F8F65B; Fri, 22 Jun 2001 19:57:21 +0900 (KST) Received: (from cjh@localhost) by gradius.wdb.co.kr (8.11.4/8.11.3) id f5MAq0k54803; Fri, 22 Jun 2001 19:52:00 +0900 (KST) (envelope-from cjh@kr.FreeBSD.ORG) X-Authentication-Warning: gradius.wdb.co.kr: cjh set sender to cjh@kr.FreeBSD.ORG using -f To: mkes@ra.rockwell.com Cc: freebsd-mozilla@freebsd.org Subject: Re: 0.9.1 FreeBSD build on mozilla.org References: From: CHOI Junho Organization: Korea FreeBSD Users Group Date: 22 Jun 2001 19:51:59 +0900 In-Reply-To: Message-ID: <868zikn5ww.fsf@gradius.wdb.co.kr> Lines: 20 User-Agent: Gnus/5.0808 (Gnus v5.8.8) Emacs/20.7 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Sender: owner-freebsd-mozilla@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG >>>>> "m" == mkes writes: m> Hi m> I would like to post a comment concerning Mozilla "releases" one can get from the mozilla.org m> I have downloaded the 0.9.1 release for FreeBSD from the mozilla.org. m> The file claims it is for FreeBSD 4.3.
