I had the cursor, and copy&paste functionality working fine. I then brought this box to my office, and plugged in an "AROWANA Jerry Mouse Serial" (3 buttons). The cursor was there, without any change to the config. Ten minutes ago I realized I had the cursor, but could not copy&paste anything. I ran /stand/sysinstall, Configure -> Mouse, Type -> Auto, Port -> COM1, Enable. I have the cursor moving at the confirmation dialog, however, it disappears as soon as I answer "yes". Now I don't have the cursor in any of the ttys either. If I restart the machine, the cursor appears, but I still can't copy&paste. The same happens with A4Tech OK-520 (serial, 2 buttons). I have tried all the protocols with the same (or worse) results. Any ideas? cynic@mail.cz ------------- And the eyes of them both were opened and they saw that their files were world readable and writable, so they chmoded 600 their files. - Book of Installation chapt 3 sec 7 To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Wed Jun 20 8:58: 2 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from web4206.mail.yahoo.com (web4206.mail.yahoo.com [216.115.104.139]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 578EB37B406 for ; Wed, 20 Jun 2001 08:58:00 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from petko_bg@yahoo.co.uk) Message-ID: <20010620155800.14910.qmail@web4206.mail.yahoo.com> Received: from [213.137.32.200] by web4206.mail.yahoo.com; Wed, 20 Jun 2001 16:58:00 BST Date: Wed, 20 Jun 2001 16:58:00 +0100 (BST) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Petko=20Hristov=20Popadiyski?= Subject: Time execution command? I made one: --- SCRIPT #!/bin/sh # # run command on background and after specified time # stop the command # BUG: if the command finishes on its own, than # it writes some info about terminating # if parameter count ($#) is <= 2 if [ $# -le 2 ]; then echo "usage: $0 sec_to_wait command" >&2 exit 1 fi # run sleep on background and save its PID ($!) sleep $1 & sleepPID=$! # shift parameters left shift # run command on background (+ if it finishes kill sleep command) # and save its PID ( eval $* ; kill $sleepPID 2> /dev/null) & procPID=$! # wait for sleep to finish wait $sleepPID # test if the command was killed or finished on its own if kill $procPID 2> /dev/null; then echo "Procces killed" else echo "Procces finished" fi --- SCRIPT END But I have problem with some info about termination. It can be solved like that: script 20 echo hi \; sleep 10 \; echo end 2> /dev/null ^^^^^^^^^^^^ I'm not sure it will help you, but thats the way, I will do it. Maybe it can be done more easyly, but I'm not UNIX guru :-). hope it will help a bit. -- Marian Cerny cerny@spnv.sk To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Wed Jun 20 22:44: 9 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from whizkidtech.net (r42.bfm.org [216.127.220.138]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BE8FF37B403 for ; Wed, 20 Jun 2001 22:44:03 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from adam@whizkidtech.net) Received: (from adam@localhost) by whizkidtech.net (8.11.3/8.11.3) id f5L5hnk00327 for newbies@freebsd.org; Thu, 21 Jun 2001 00:43:49 -0500 (CDT) (envelope-from adam) Date: Thu, 21 Jun 2001 00:43:07 -0500 From: "G. Alas, old habits are hard to break. Especially when those habits come from using the DOS shell (I tossed COMMAND.COM for the Unix-like 4DOS many years ago), and when you are still using that shell under the other OS. Anyway, I did one of those stupid old-habits-die-hard mistakes today. I thought I'd share it with other newbies in the hope of stopping someone else from making the same mistake. I spent several hours (or at least it seemed that way) creating two EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) files containing some flowcharts. One was serv.eps, the other serv2.eps. I created them under the other OS because I wanted to see their output. (I created them by writing the PostScript code directly, not by using an image editor.) When done, I rebooted to FreeBSD, switched to the directory that was the final destination for these two files, and typed: cp /d/path/serv*.eps Now, what I *meant* to type was: cp /d/path/serv*.eps . That is, copy these two files to this directory. I forget that last dot a lot because under 4DOS the dot is implied: Its copy command always copies to the current directory unless you expressly tell it otherwise. Normally, I discover my mistake quite quickly as FreeBSD complains that I did not use the cp command correctly. This time, however, it did not complain. I realized my mistake anyway, and was wondering why it did not complain. When I figured the answer out, I was not happy. It was a mistake I should not have made because by now I know quite well that whenever we enter wildcards at the shell prompt, it is the shell that expands the wildcards. Indeed, the shell expanded /d/path/serv*.eps into: /d/path/serv.eps /d/path/serv2.eps In other words, when I entered cp /d/path/serv*.eps the shell changed it to: cp /d/path/serv.eps /d/path/serv2/eps That, unfortunately, is a perfectly legitimate way of using the cp command. It did not complain because what I really told it was to overwrite the contents of /d/path/serv2.eps with those of /d/path/serv.eps, and it did what I asked. And, of course, I had no backup (this was supposed to *be* the backup). Luckily, I had it still fresh in my mind, and was able to recreate serv2.eps in some 20 minutes or so (which, compared to hours, is not so bad). This has been a valuable lesson for me, and now I hope for at least some of you as well. If you are paranoid you can always use -i with cp. cp will then require confirmation when overwriting files. Example: $ cp -i /d/path/serv*.eps overwrite /d/path/serv2.eps? (y/n [n]) n not overwritten $ As root I have an alias cp = 'cp -i' which forces me to confirm all the time, unless I override it with -f. Example: alias cp 'cp -i' $ cp /d/path/serv*.eps overwrite /d/path/serv2.eps? (y/n [n]) n not overwritten $ cp -f /d/path/serv*.eps $ Quite nice since it requires you to take the initiative to do something stupid ;) You can also do this with `mv' and `rm'. You might be frustrated at times when you are copying a bunch of files, but you'll thank `-i' later when you detect that you are about to do something really bad. - -- Jörgen Sigvardsson, B. Sc. When I wanted to compile just the kernel to include lpt support, i've encountered some errors. First, there are two kernel options that i cannot figure why don't seem to work when trying to configure the kernel ( in fact, that is after cvsupping), : options TCP_RESTRICT_RST options ATA_ENABLE_ATAPI_DMA and what's worse, when i start with 'make depend' i've got the error message that there are missing crypto files, I cvsup with src-sys and src-crypto in my cvsup file. It is also available at http://www.welearn.com.au/freebsd/newbies/) FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "subscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message. I am trying to install FreeBSD 4.2 on a Maxtor drive that has Windows 98 on it already. I went out and bought Partition Commander after I somehow wiped out my hard drive the first time I tried to install. When I start the pc, an HP 233 mhz I get a screen asking which partition I want to boot from. Fine, this is what I want, the new FreeBSD partition was created. When I boot with the install CD, sysinstall automatically starts and I can get to into the FDISK partition editor but my new partition doesn't show up. There is what looks like almost the entire disk, and then a 9 meg slice that doesn't correspond to the 3 gig slice I had set up with Partition Commander. In The Complete FreeBSD by Greg Lehey there are other options, but I am being check-mated on all of them. My 1.44M floppies all say they can hold 1,457,664 bytes but BOOT.FLP and KERN.FLP are each 1,474,560 bytes (20k more than the floppies), so I can't copy them. I tried RAWRITE too but it gets to a certain point and says something about a bad sector (Scandisk says there are no bad sectors). I think it really ran out of space. There are references to INSTALL.EXE and VIEW.EXE that could be run from a Microsoft partition. They're supposed to be on the install CD but don't exist. (pages 29 and 69). Has anybody run into any of these problems? Where would I find the Install.exe and/or view.exe files? Thanks for any help you can give.
