As opposed to "Complete FreeBsd" which imo is more advanced but still mandatory - esp. the networking chapter(s) in "Complete", esp. the example network diagram. I can't discriminate. When I took calculus I used five books. Each book had different examples and permutations, the more real world examples I saw the more it sunk in. >===== Original Message From Scott ===== >On 21:42 2001/12/01 -0500, leegold wrote >>I really like the attempt to simplify FreeBSD. >>I am learning a lot from this book. The best for beginner to intermediate user IMO. Was extensively edited and is most affordable compared to all other books on the OS. It's more up-to-date than anything else, makes easy read and even at the newbie level shows and explains a few gems on the routine level that may take a lot of time and experience to figure out on your own. These will be on your hard drive. You can also buy the recently published Second Edition of the Handbook in a print version--very convenient. 2) FreeBSD: An Open-Source Operating System for Your Personal Computer. This is the book I wrote and is specifically for users new to both FreeBSD and UNIX, so it doesn't assume you know basic UNIX commands. It's task oriented and in addition to introducing you to the system it covers getting X, printing, sound, and your network running, as well installing third-party software, compiling your own kernel, and upgrading the system. 3) FreeBSD Unleased (Urban and Tiemann) This is a longer book and covers some third-party applications in greater detail than my book. 4) The Complete FreeBSD (Lehey) This has been the standard (and only) book other than the Handbook for years; but the current edition is from 1999, so some of the recent stuff (in spite of Lehey's updates on freebsd-questions) is not covered. A new edition may be in the works, but not for several months as far as I know. 5) FreeBSD Corporate Networker's Guide (Mittelstaedt) This book is great if you're running a network with both Windows and FreeBSD machines. In addition you need one fairly comprehensive UNIX manual like UNIX for the Impatient, possibly a book on your shell, and a system administration book like UNIX System Administration Handbook (Nemeth et.al.) The third edition uses FreeBSD as one of its example systems (FreeBSD 3.2). Finally, you want books specific to what you want to know about in depth (or web resources). Some books are available on-line, like O'Reilly's Using Samba. There are other books on various programming languages, apache, sendmail, and so forth. I agree amazon.com is a great resource; so is bsdmall.com (formerly mall.daemonnews.org). The latter doesn't have reviews like Amazon does, but it does have books specific to your interest right at hand. Dear Media Executive,

I would like to speak to you regarding our new content management solution (CMS) called the “Oven” - it has been specifically developed for publishers.  In a nutshell, if a company has extensive content such as articles and media (jpgs, gifs, word documents, pdf’s, avi’s, mpg’s, mov’s) they can push this content to the web in minutes without having any programming skills. The same people creating the content can update the website daily through a web-enabled interface.

Publishers who have an existing website, push your content to the web faster and cheaper today.  Publishers without a web presence get one now!

Alice Plain, Jeep King of the Mountain, had this to say, "This is amazing! I cannot believe how easy it is to manage and update the Website, I have always wanted to take a class to learn more about the Internet, but now I don’t have to, anyone that can type can do this."

We have different solutions to meet your specific needs!

Single License – for individual websites, we will either integrate seamlessly with your existing site or build from the ground up.

Multi License – For publishers that manage multiple websites.

Enterprise (hosted or non-hosted) – Ideal for publishers or organizations that are interested in purchasing the Oven’s base technology and would like to implement a great deal of customization.   These clients continue to benefit from core improvements and feature enhancements to the Oven at no cost.

On install I went through the network dialup ppp connection box, and when I typed in "dial" it connected to my ISP, however at the time there was nothing set up to try the connection with, so I don't know if it was working properly or not. Also do not know how to shut it down, so ended up leaving it connected till the system reboot, and now I don't know how to get back to the place where I type "dial" to get it up again, figure it must be some where in the book, or online handbook, just have not gotten that far yet. Am kind of chomping at the bit to get at least e-mail up and running. Now the reason I'm wondering about recompiling the kernel for X is on the XFree86 web site it mentions that for the i810 server to work AGP GART kernel support is required, and I don't know if the generic version is set up that way. Besides the fact that I'm looking forward to cooking up a kernel of my own. This is for version 4.0.x (3 I think) that came with the distro. When I tried to fire up 3.3.6 it errored out with /dev/agpgart not configured, so figured it must have something to do with it. I have set up X and PPP on Debian Linux, however not on this box, and I know that FreeBSD does things differently, so pretty confident that I will be able to get the job done, just a matter of finding the where and how of it all. Thanks for your input, and as mentioned, will look into the ppp thing you mentioned. After you dial, to see if it's working, you can try pinging a host on the internet, like www.freebsd.org... Just type 'ping www.freebsd.org' at your prompt. The place where you 'dial' can be reached by just typing 'ppp' at the prompt. Look at the ppp man page for info on how to get it to do background dialing, auto dialing and so on. Oh, and one gotcha that I'd like to mention is that non-root users who wish to use ppp must also be in the 'network' group. > -----Original Message----- > From: Lute Mullenix [mailto:lute@willinet.net] > Sent: Friday, December 07, 2001 7:55 PM > To: Haikal Saadh > Cc: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org > Subject: Re: It's started > > > Ok, I will check into the ppp.conf.sample. There have been a few updates for security problems since 4.3 was released, and if this is a machine that will be connected to the Internet (I'm assuming that is what you want PPP for), you should update your system to have these problems patched. Since updating is described in the Handbook, I'm not going to repeat everything about updating your system here though :) Please, do search for updating instructions at http://www.FreeBSD.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/ There's is a nice page with resources for getting support for FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.org/support.html - you might want to check that too. I hope this helps a bit. It is also available at http://www.welearn.com.au/freebsd/newbies/) FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "subscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message. On FreeBSD you'll probably want to run Apache (http://www.apache.org), and a quick search for "ASP support" on their site reveals: http://httpd.apache.org/related_projects.html with projects related to Apache. One of these is: http://www.activescripting.org/html/projects.html Look at these two pages, and see if anything can fit your needs. There are many scripting languages that can be used with Apache though, if you don't really HAVE to use ASP. PHP (http://www.php.net) and mod_perl (http://perl.apache.org) are two that I can remember off the top of my head. You can also look at Chilisoft from Sun. I don't know if it has a specific version for FreeBSD, but a) it's java based and b) they do have a linux version, which might work. You'll probably want to move to a different language though if you're going to run ASP-style scripts on FreeBSD. PHP is popular, and has the benefit of being able to run on Windows and Unix in case you ever decide to go back to Windows. brian -- Got work? http://www.planetshwoop.com/resume/ This is how I think: http://www.planetshwoop.com/blog/ Brian Sobolak sobolak@mindspring.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Sat Dec 8 21:10:26 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from m20.unixathome.org (m20.unixathome.org [216.187.106.227]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0642037B416; Sat, 8 Dec 2001 21:10:24 -0800 (PST) Received: by m20.unixathome.org (Postfix, from userid 1001) id DCDCE7A72; Sun, 9 Dec 2001 00:10:03 -0500 (EST) From: Dan Langille To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org, freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Subject: The FreeBSD Diary: 2001-11-18 - 2001-12-08 Message-Id: <20011209051003.DCDCE7A72@m20.unixathome.org> Date: Sun, 9 Dec 2001 00:10:03 -0500 (EST) Sender: owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org The FreeBSD Diary contains a large number of practical examples and how-to guides.
