Somewhere between 4.2-RELEASE and 4.3-RELEASE, I had a problem exactly like this, and had to chop eisa from my config to fix it. ...Marc... X-Mailer: TWIG Sender: owner-freebsd-scsi@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org I have a quick question about CAM/XPT target mode codes, and I use FreeBSD 4.1 release kernel. Although I know target mode codes is not yet complete, I still hope to know the virtue of design. in target mode peripheral driver: targenlun() will launch MAX_ACCEPT ccb to sim device to wait for request from ------------------------ initiator side. --------------- targdone() deals with 2 main function codes, XPT_ACCEPT_TARGET_IO, and XPT_CONT_TARGET_IO. If a ccb callback from sim device and its fun_code is XPT_ACCEPT_TARGET_IO, simple command like INQUIRY, TEST_UNIT_READY etc would be filled with atio->ccb_h.flags &= ~CAM_DIR_MASK; atio->ccb_h.flags | CAM_DIR_NONE; descr->data_resid = 0; descr->data_increment = 0; descr->timeout = 5*1000; descr->status = SCSI_STATUS_OK; then return to sim device for reply to initiator side. -------------------------------- However, complicated command like RECEIVE, SEND would notify userland polling program to process command. The process would call targstrategy() -> targstart() to launch XPT_CONT_TARGET_IO command to sim device for data transfer. My question is does sim device distinguish 2 different XPT_ACCEPT_TARGET_IO behaviours? or my interpretation is wrong? All requests return to initiator are done by XPT_ACCEPT_TARGET_IO ccb to sim device without exception, no matter simple command or complicated command. I just managed to hang any process that attempts to acess the RAID. The process table shows the following for the hung processes: 0 367 303 0 -6 0 412 276 biord D+ p0 0:00.10 rm -rf bf do 0 363 322 0 -6 0 952 596 biord D+ p1 0:00.37 find /usr2 I am not currently at the RAID location so I can't check to see if anything physically (heat, etc) is going on until I get to the office in the morning. My first thought is SCSI cabling and or termination problems. Anybody have any other ideas? I have attached the dmesg output. It's not currently possible; the BIOS on the Intel RAID controllers is (massively) buggy, and crashes when run under the FreeBSD bootloader. However, Intel acquired ICP Vortex a little while back, and ICP are completely reimplementing both the BIOS and firmware for these controllers. I'm still waiting on more news from ICP, but I gave them major numbers etc. a while back, and I believe they're still busily working on it. The process table shows the following for the hung processes: I think there may still be some races in the mly driver; I thought the new version in -current was better (you can pull the sources from -current and try them yourself), but at least one test site has reported they are still having trouble. I have not had time to work on this recently; I'd hoped to get it fixed for 4.4, but that's not looking likely right now. There is 1 container set up on the drives that is about 34GB. It is detected at "aacd0". Installation goes just fine, but when I try to reboot, I get the following message: -------------------------------------------- no devsw (majdev=0 bootdev=0xa0200000) Mounting root from ufs:/dev/aacd0s1a no such device 'aacd' setrootbyname failed ffs_mountroot: can't find rootvp Root mount failed: 6 Manual root filesystem specification: : Mount using filesystem eg. ufs:/dev/da0s1a ? The last thing I tried was to install via FTP from releng4.FreeBSD.org - I grabbed the snapshot from yesterday and still have the same problem. I've also tried just using the regular MBR as opposed to the Boot Manager, as someone suggested. Thanks, I think you're seeing the same problem I am. It isn't related to your RAID controller. Something in -STABLE broke bus probing on a few rare machines such as yours and mine. I'll bet your dmesg output is quite short since most of your devices aren't being probed. I tried to narrow down the commit that may have caused it last night, but I didn't have any luck. I'm hoping others can give me suggestions on recent -STABLE changes (within three weeks or a month) to revert to try and find the problem. I can check out previous dates of the tree to try and narrow it down, too, but thats a bit of a pain. -- Chris Dillon - cdillon@wolves.k12.mo.us - cdillon@inter-linc.net FreeBSD: The fastest and most stable server OS on the planet - Available for IA32 (Intel x86) and Alpha architectures - IA64, PowerPC, UltraSPARC, and ARM architectures under development - http://www.freebsd.org To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-scsi" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-scsi Thu Aug 16 14:16:20 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Received: from gta.com (mailgate.gta.com [199.120.225.4]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 04C2737B40E; Thu, 16 Aug 2001 14:16:15 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from lab@gta.com) Received: from gta.com (GTA internal mail system) by gta.com with ESMTP id RAA41949; Thu, 16 Aug 2001 17:01:02 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: <3B7C34CC.954B1182@gta.com> Date: Thu, 16 Aug 2001 17:02:04 -0400 From: Larry Baird X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.75 [en] (X11; U; FreeBSD 4.4-PRERELEASE i386) X-Accept-Language: en, ja, zh, zh-TW, cs MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Mike Smith Cc: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Understanding messages from mly driver under 4.3 release References: <200108160840.f7G8eJC09012@gta.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-scsi@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Mike Smith wrote: > > Aug 14 23:47:00 saru /kernel: mly0: physical device 0:3 sense data received > > Aug 14 23:47:00 saru /kernel: mly0: sense key 11 asc 47 ascq 00 > > This is bad; sense key 11 is "ABORTED COMMAND"; I don't know what the > asc/ascq values mean. For sanity's sake, you'd wanna do a full backup before attempting anything like this. If both controllers use the same configuration files, etc. which are stored on the disk, this would probably work. Just hope the device identifiers won't be changing or you could end up with a big mess. --- Andy To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-scsi" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-scsi Thu Aug 16 23:50:49 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Received: from hetnet.nl (net013s.hetnet.nl [194.151.104.153]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6F6C337B407 for ; Thu, 16 Aug 2001 23:50:42 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from n_hibma@qubesoft.com) Received: from LAPTOP02 ([213.75.32.173]) by hetnet.nl with Microsoft SMTPSVC(5.5.1877.757.75); Fri, 17 Aug 2001 08:49:49 +0200 From: "Nick Hibma" To: , Cc: "Phil Knaack" Subject: RE: Microtech USB CameraMate CF/CF+/CFII/SM Reader patches... That will not work on most controllers, because of the config on disk. It is stored on the beginning of each disk. Since I can move disks from channel to channel and id to id, and the controller still knows which physical disks belong to which logical disk set, I would have to say that you are going to have a problem. I wouldn't necessarily bet that most controllers have their configuration at the beginning of the disk. The Adaptec smart raid (former DPT) controllers put their configuration at the end of the disk. I don't know about other RAID controllers, though. Almost all controllers will put it at the end of the disk; it's typically only naive designs that don't, and they don't usually last long. 8) -- ... every activity meets with opposition, everyone who acts has his rivals and unfortunately opponents also. Twice. Once with an AMI MegaRAID Enterprise 1200 along time ago, and once with a Mylex AcceleRAID 170 fairly recently. I'm not sure where the on-disk configuration is stored, but apparently it is someplace that doesn't affect things when attached to a standard controller. -- Chris Dillon - cdillon@wolves.k12.mo.us - cdillon@inter-linc.net FreeBSD: The fastest and most stable server OS on the planet - Available for IA32 (Intel x86) and Alpha architectures - IA64, PowerPC, UltraSPARC, and ARM architectures under development - http://www.freebsd.org To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-scsi" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-scsi Fri Aug 17 19:45: 2 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Received: from serv1.wallnet.com (server1.wallnet.com [208.225.162.122]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F295D37B40D; Fri, 17 Aug 2001 19:44:52 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from timothyk@wallnet.com) Received: from mts-110.wallnet.com (mts-110.wallnet.com [208.225.162.42]) by serv1.wallnet.com (8.11.5/8.11.5) with SMTP id f7I2ioj07582; Fri, 17 Aug 2001 22:44:50 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from timothyk@wallnet.com) From: Tim Kellers To: Chris Dillon , Scott Long Subject: Re: Serious Problems with PERC3 Dual Channel and FreeBSD 4.3 Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2001 21:41:15 -0400 X-Mailer: KMail [version 1.1.99] Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Cc: Joseph Koenig , , References: In-Reply-To: MIME-Version: 1.0 Message-Id: <01081721411500.09185@mts-129.wallnet.com> Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Sender: owner-freebsd-scsi@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org I'm currently running a Dell 2500 dual processor server with a PERC 3 di RAID controller and 4.4 Pre-release. Oddly enough, last night. I cvsupped and built the world then the kernel and installed the kernel (4.4 RC) on my production server (single processor PII) and the kernel build worked fine, but the box wouldn't boot the kernel. I dropped back to loading kernel.old from a boot command prompt and the box came up fine (whew!). I think somthing might be amiss with the sources for kernel from about the past 48 hours or so. But, to get back to your problem, you might want to get the July 21, 2001 snapshot, make the boot disks and install from there. From that snapshot my 2500 booted happily. From the file Makefile.usbdevs, I read: ------------ # The files usbdevs.h and usbdevs_data.h are generated from usbdevs # # $FreeBSD: src/sys/dev/usb/Makefile.usbdevs,v 1.2 2000/03/15 22:13:50 n_hibma Exp $ AWK= awk UNAME= uname RM= rm # The targets are always remade. .PHONY= all all: usbdevs devlist2h.awk /bin/rm -f usbdevs.h usbdevs_data.h ${AWK} -v type=USB -v os=`${UNAME} -s` -f devlist2h.awk usbdevs ------------ In both of the header files, I read that they are automagically generated from the rather elegant awk script. The problem being that mine had not been regenerated since early-mid June or July [sorry I forgot to write down the date]... A make of the kernel, with ONLY usbdevs changed DID NOT update these include files, and this makefile had to be run by hand, which DID properly generate the include files from usbdevs. I know this is probably not the -list for this part of this, but since it's all related.... The patches I posted for usbdevs, and umass.c are correct. The scsi_da.c one is correct, but as I was playing with them to get them to patch -current, the line numbers were off, and thus patch tended to dump core rather nastily.
