Well, if that's the case, then I think the USB people should change the comments in the files that lead one to think they would be built whenever usbdevs is changed. Just by reading the files, you would think that if you change usbdevs, that the makefile for the includes is run automatically. If it was changed to reflect the comments in the files, then that would be two less files to cvsup when changes are indeed made, especially if they only take a second to build locally, assuming that the makefile could be modified. In the meantime, I'll post patches to the two include files... Phil included these to me when he sent the patches originally, but as I recall, even though his code was correct, only one of the five patch files actually took when applied, and that's why I used emacs, and generated patches against -current based on my inserting them by hand. > >>The patches I posted for usbdevs, and umass.c are correct. I don't know what caused this, and I have seen patch really work fuzzy in the past, but... patch.core... I didn't save the corefile to find out... the original scsi_da.c patch I posted will produce a patch coredump tho... The revised one I sent won't. I don't subscribe to the list, but since these devices act like SCSI devices, I posted them here, and hopefully someone will commit the patches to -current. They seem to work just fine. Although I don't have SmartMedia cards [my camera only uses CF], I'm assuming that it will work just fine as well. This reader also supports the IBM Microdrive II gigger [assuming someone out there has the dough to buy one, I saw the eBay prices and said "I'll wait a couple of years"]. Anyhow, I'm probably not alone in lack of support for the serial interface on my camera, as I can see, only a limited number of such cameras are supported under anything other than WinBlowz, and a lot of people have to use these readers to get their pix. Trying to get dox outta Polaroid for their serial interface is like squeezing blood outta a turnip, hell, just trying to find someone who knows anything about the camera is hard enough, and it's one of their best-sellers [PDC-700]. I guess that's what you get from a customer-support operation run by their marketing division... #1 way to screw up a technical support operation: Hire marketing majors to run it. [No offense to any marketing types out there, but my experience is that marketing-types can generally screw up anything they touch]. All that aside, let's get these patches into -current! The controller appears to be detected using the generic kernel and, after some Visual mode trimming, it works fine. Hardware/Software setup: OS: FreeBSD 4.3 April 2001 CD set SCSI Controller: Adaptec 2940 U/UW Drive: Seagate Barracuda 9GB (ST19171N) CD-Rom: NEC SCSI CD drive Partial Boot output: >ahc0: port 0xd400-0xd4ff mem > 0xdf800000-0xdf800ff irq 10 at device 10.0 on pci0 >aic7880: Wide Channel A, SCSI Id=15, 16/255 SCBs Please note that no "sa" device appears in boot output that I can see. The aic7880 worries me a bit, but only because I'm not sure if it should be there with ahc0. After boot sequence. sysinstall begins. I pick Standard Installation. I get the standard fdisk "only do this if God himself gives you permission" warning. And then the error... >No disks found! Please verify that your disk controller is being >properly probed at boot time. See the Hardware Guide on the >Documentation menu for clues on diagnosing this type of problem. Hardware Guide gives nothing much more than a "user's guide" on sysinstall Visual mode syntax plus a long list of supported hardware. I already know that AHA-2940 is supported as "ahc". "sa" appears nowhere in Visual menu. As far as I can tell, the controller itself is being detected, even though it's not one of the listed controllers in Visual selection mode. (I find this odd that it's not there). The only "bogus" listed items in Visual mode are a bunch of incorrect SCSI controllers and a lot of NIC cards I don't have. I just remove all those. ahc still gets detected. Since this is all pre-fdisk, my Debian installation still resides on the drive. And windows was on it long before that. The hardware is fine. Boots. CD and drive both work. Etcetc. Could be SCSI config issue, but would have to be something special that is unique to FreeBSD. I'm at the end of my knowledge rope. Massive Googling revealed little. -- William Guynes Previously posted to freebsd-questions To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-scsi" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-scsi Tue Aug 21 20:49:52 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Received: from aslan.scsiguy.com (aslan.scsiguy.com [63.229.232.106]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 79FA237B406 for ; Tue, 21 Aug 2001 20:49:49 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from gibbs@scsiguy.com) Received: from scsiguy.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by aslan.scsiguy.com (8.11.5/8.11.5) with ESMTP id f7M3nkY06271; Tue, 21 Aug 2001 21:49:47 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from gibbs@scsiguy.com) Message-Id: <200108220349.f7M3nkY06271@aslan.scsiguy.com> To: wguynes@mav.net Cc: freebsd-scsi@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: sysinstall won't read drive, even though scsi controller is detected In-Reply-To: Your message of "Tue, 21 Aug 2001 20:25:56 CDT." <6a26otk39br425aoqeofiv9gt592hbet3h@smtp.prodigy.net> Date: Tue, 21 Aug 2001 21:49:46 -0600 From: "Justin T. At this point, can you hit "Scoll Lock" and PgUP to see if there are any additional messages output by the ahc driver? You might also try one of the 4.4-RC floppies to see if a newer kernel probes your devices better. Full firmware information for the Baracudda would be good to know too. Are you still the current sysinstall guru? I'd say there are at least a few of those now, but I can say that if the drives don't show up it's because they failed to open for some reason (libdisk(3)'s disk open routine runs down the list of possibilities and returns those targets which can be found). If they fail to open, it's generally because they're not really as "there" as the probe messages might have intimated. - Jordan To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-scsi" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-scsi Thu Aug 23 17:48:12 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Received: from pimout3-int.prodigy.net (pimout3-ext.prodigy.net [207.115.63.102]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E353937B409; Thu, 23 Aug 2001 17:48:08 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from wguynes@mav.net) Received: from leopard (A010-0657.ALBQ.splitrock.net [209.254.243.149]) by pimout3-int.prodigy.net (8.11.0/8.11.0) with SMTP id f7O0m6q171600; Thu, 23 Aug 2001 20:48:06 -0400 From: William Guynes To: Jordan Hubbard Cc: gibbs@scsiguy.com, freebsd-scsi@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: sysinstall won't read drive, even though scsi controller is detected Date: Thu, 23 Aug 2001 18:40:59 -0500 Organization: DownWithSpam, Inc. Attached devices are a Yamaha CDRW (internal) and an Olympus PowerMO (external). I couldn't get the controller recognized by the drivers that came with FreeBSD, so I downloaded and installed this one: ftp://ftp.tekram.com/scsi/3X5/FreeBSD/FreeBSD400/dc395x_trm.tar.gz After that, SCSI worked fine for me (CDRW is reading and burning, MOD is working fine when it's probed while booting). The only thing that I'm having problems with is "camcontrol rescan" which I would like to use to turn the MOD off when I don't need it. "camcontrol rescan" simply hangs. It can't be quit, neither with CTRL-C nor with kill -9. I don't get any error-message. ps tells me that WCHAN is "cbwait D+". In this state, the bus is still working fine. I can still burn CDs, "camcontrol reset" is still working (at least is says so :-), "camcontrol devlist" is still giving the devicelist that was probed when booting. The same thing happens when booting without the MOD attached and without actually changing anything on the bus; rescan simply hangs. Is anybody here who can enlighten me whether I'm doing something wrong, TekRAMs driver is broken or something else? I was just about to buy a scanner, but as long as I can't get rescan to work I should better think about USB than SCSI (or maybe get a different, better supported controller before... ;-). cu Gerrit To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-scsi" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-scsi Fri Aug 24 12:16:46 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Received: from smtp010.mail.yahoo.com (smtp010.mail.yahoo.com [216.136.173.30]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 81C5937B403 for ; Fri, 24 Aug 2001 12:16:43 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from kc5vdj@yahoo.com) Received: from mkc-65-28-47-209.kc.rr.com (HELO yahoo.com) (65.28.47.209) by smtp.mail.vip.sc5.yahoo.com with SMTP; 24 Aug 2001 19:16:43 -0000 X-Apparently-From: Message-ID: <3B86A81A.608@yahoo.com> Date: Fri, 24 Aug 2001 14:16:42 -0500 From: Jim Bryant Reply-To: kc5vdj@yahoo.com User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i386; en-US; rv:0.9.2) Gecko/20010726 Netscape6/6.1 X-Accept-Language: en-us MIME-Version: 1.0 To: mjacob@feral.com Cc: scsi@freebsd.org Subject: Re: tape testers wanted for freebsd-current References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-scsi@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Matthew Jacob wrote: > I've made some changes which cleared up problems with EOM handling and > correctly doing things with QIC. I would suspect the driver, but it's rather hard to say. If you have access to another SCSI controller (especially an Adaptec or LSI Logic-based controller), it might be good to see if you can reproduce your problem with a different controller. It sounds like what is likely happening is that the controller isn't returning some of the CCBs that are being sent down to scan the bus. Since the CCBs don't get returned, the rescan hangs forever. This is just speculation, though; I haven't looked at the driver. One thing to try, if you haven't already, is just rescan the bus/target/lun that the device is on. (See the output of camcontrol devlist to determine that.) i.e.: camcontrol rescan 0:4:0 instead of camcontrol rescan 0 Ken -- Kenneth Merry ken@kdm.org To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-scsi" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-scsi Sat Aug 25 9:52:38 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Received: from melchior.cuivre.fr.eu.org (melchior.enst.fr [137.194.161.6]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0800037B40A; Sat, 25 Aug 2001 09:52:33 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from thomas@cuivre.fr.eu.org) Received: from melusine.cuivre.fr.eu.org (melusine.enst.fr [137.194.160.34]) by melchior.cuivre.fr.eu.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1EAA279A9; Sat, 25 Aug 2001 18:52:31 +0200 (CEST) Received: by melusine.cuivre.fr.eu.org (Postfix, from userid 1000) id 68FCE24D45; Sat, 25 Aug 2001 18:52:23 +0200 (CEST) Date: Sat, 25 Aug 2001 18:52:23 +0200 From: Thomas Quinot To: stable@freebsd.org, scsi@freebsd.org Subject: Failure to attach SCSI CD burner Message-ID: <20010825185223.A24294@melusine.cuivre.fr.eu.org> Reply-To: thomas@cuivre.fr.eu.org Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.2.5i Sender: owner-freebsd-scsi@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Him I have an HP4020 CD burner, and for a few weeks it has stopped being attached at boot, except when there is a CD-ROM in the drive at boot time. What's in your /etc/fstab? Here's the SCSI burner (SONY CRX-14something) entry in mine: > # Device Mountpoint FStype Options Dump Pass# > /dev/cd0c /burner cd9660 ro,noauto 0 0 If you don't have it marked "noauto", then you should. I realize it's marked "R", but it still burns. -- Mike Andrews mikea@mikea.ath.cx Tired old sysadmin since 1964 To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-scsi" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-scsi Sat Aug 25 13:16: 4 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Received: from panzer.kdm.org (panzer.kdm.org [216.160.178.169]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B44A737B407; Sat, 25 Aug 2001 13:15:58 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from ken@panzer.kdm.org) Received: (from ken@localhost) by panzer.kdm.org (8.9.3/8.9.1) id OAA08918; Sat, 25 Aug 2001 14:15:49 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from ken) Date: Sat, 25 Aug 2001 14:15:49 -0600 From: "Kenneth D. It looks like your drive is returning an error when there is no CD in the drive, which is normal. What is not normal is that it isn't providing sense information to tell us what that error is. So this didn't happen before? Have you done anything to the drive? (like upgrade the firmware?) When did you last build a new kernel before this happened? I suppose this started happening when you last built a kernel/world? Do you have any other controllers you could put the drive on to see if it is a controller/driver issue? Try this, without a CD in the drive: camcontrol cmd cd0 -v -c "25 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0" -i 8 "i4 i4" Then try it with a CD in the drive.
