It complains about stupid options in the kernel config file, but even once those are fixed, it's still all broken and I get errors about 'cp' syntax near the end of the build. A: The install floppy is broken. I looked for every reference of cp in the whole thing, and couldn't find the error. My experiences of trying to fix the install floppy were frustrating to say the least. Do this instead (but only if you know what you're doing): cd /usr/src/release/picobsd cp -R dial myinstall # (note, dial is just my choice. Others may work) cp -R install/floppy.tree myinstall/ cd build ./picobsd and build myinstall. Trust me, this is a whole lot easier. Of course, it's wrong, and it has the potential to break all sorts of things, but as the starting point, it's the only way I've even got a build of a floppy with the doinstall and other tools for installs so far. ;-) Just thought I'd hand something back... -- Paul Robinson - Technical Director .---------------------------------------- PO Box 604, Manchester, M60 3PR | A computer lets you make more mistakes T: +44 (0) 161 228 6388 (F: 6389) | than any other invention, with the http://www.akita.co.uk | possible exceptions of handguns and paul@akita.co.uk | Tequila -- Mitch Ratcliffe `--- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-small" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-small Mon Jun 18 3:13:14 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-small@freebsd.org Received: from tao.org.uk (genesis.tao.org.uk [212.135.162.62]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2FCA637B401 for ; Mon, 18 Jun 2001 03:13:11 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from joe@tao.org.uk) Received: by tao.org.uk (Postfix, from userid 100) id 8572C520; Mon, 18 Jun 2001 11:13:09 +0100 (BST) Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2001 11:13:09 +0100 From: Josef Karthauser To: Simon Nielsen Cc: freebsd-small@freebsd.org Subject: Re: PicoBSD patches Message-ID: <20010618111309.D728@tao.org.uk> References: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-md5; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="fXStkuK2IQBfcDe+" Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.2.5i In-Reply-To: ; from simon@nitro.dk on Sun, Jun 17, 2001 at 09:59:29PM +0200 Sender: owner-freebsd-small@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG --fXStkuK2IQBfcDe+ Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable On Sun, Jun 17, 2001 at 09:59:29PM +0200, Simon Nielsen wrote: >=20 > Hello >=20 > I have some suggestions for changes for PicoBSD with patches. I am Bcc-ing to -small in case the people there are interested too. Basically, i would like to come up with some easy way to cross-build picobsd images, embedding the relevant commands into the "picobsd" build script so one only has to specify the SRC tree location and the script does all things for you. There are a number of dependencies that need to be addressed in this process, including at least the following. 1. the config program. I more or less know how to handle this, basically compile whatever config is in ${SRC}/usr.sbin/config and use that one for the config step. 2. location of standard include files. Here, it looks not too complex -- at the moment i basically do the following: cd ${SRC} mkdir -p usr/include DESTDIR=`pwd` make includes CFLAGS="-nostdinc -I`pwd`/usr/includes" ; export CFLAGS and hope that the various makefiles honor CFLAGS settings. It seems to work for most things. 3. libraries This is the hard part for me. I guess there is some way from the makefiles in ${SRC}/lib to build just the static libraries and put them in some place where I can use them without conflict with the standard ones, but how ? So, could anyone suggest a good way to address step #3 ? thanks luigi -----------------------------------+------------------------------------- Luigi RIZZO, luigi@iet.unipi.it . I think there was a bug in the previous commit, but now it should be ok. * i am not sure the way you handle arguments is correct, from your patch it appears that you ignore THETYPE (first argument) if there are not two arguments. I have a script that does (basically) the following: ${INSTDEST} is the mount point for the small harddrive ${KERNELNAME} is the kernel config file make DESTDIR=${INSTDEST} hierarchy foreach i ( list of things to build ) cd /usr/src/$i make -DNOPROFILE -DNOMAN -DNOINFO depend make -DNOPROFILE -DNOMAN -DNOINFO make DESTDIR=${INSTDEST} -DNOPROFILE -DNOMAN \ -DNOINFO install end cd /usr/src/sys/i386/conf /usr/sbin/config $KERNELNAME make -DNO_MODULES depend make -DNO_MODULES make DESTDIR=${INSTDEST} -DNO_MODULES install cd /usr/src/etc make DESTDIR=${INSTDEST} -DNOMAN -DNO_SENDMAIL -DNO_UUCP \ distribution Now, if you choose your "lists of things to build"[1] to include everything /etc/rc* requires, and if you disklabel your harddrive right, you can definitely boot from your new harddrive. I personally get to a point where I can actually login to the system. Right now, I have a ipfw & natd system that needs about 16 MB of disk space. [1] It must include sys/boot for the loader, libexec/rtld-elf for the dynamic linker. As for the 'updates' you wrote about; I'm not exactly sure what you mean? You can browse the archives of this email list from the FreeBSD website, or download the current source for PicoBSD from any one of the FreeBSD mirror sites. If there's something else more specific you're speaking about... then by all means try asking the list again.
