This is not an iPod. This is an LCD iMac. It does use 120/240VAC, and Apple has chosen to use a somewhat non-standard power connector. It happens to be the exact same style of plug that they've used on their laptop power supplies, up until the very latest square white models used with the latest models of laptops. It also happens to be the same sort frequently used by Compaq. -- Brad Knowles, "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." -Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania. Twenty or 25 years ago the now common NEMA plug wasn't all so common. The then common detachable power cord plug was the little two prong plug on electric shavers and a bigger version used on coffee pots. All UL cares about is whether or not the socket/plug pair is safe from shock and made from materials which does not burst into flames. Apple chose a Big Enough power connector to fit on the back of the iMac. At least two other connectors (speaker and VGA) on the back of the iMac are way more uncommon than the power plug. Its just that I thought the power plug at the angle shown in the picture was funny. -- David Kelly N4HHE, dkelly@hiwaay.net ===================================================================== The human mind ordinarily operates at only ten percent of its capacity -- the rest is overhead for the operating system. My name isn't Mario. I should follow Jordan Hubbards advice, not CC:ing everyone, but... First... Why sending messages as Mario when you aren't Mario? Second... Did you follow the link in the message? It seems to be a BSD users group having a get together, and as people usually are social beings (even most people sitting in front of a com- puter) why not let other BSD users know where they can meet, having a beer or two, talking to other people sharing a common interest? Who knows, maybe someone comes up with a good idea at that informal meeting, that can benefit the project? Is by the way information about, for an example, Usenix on the mailing list from the good people of the FreeBSD Project also spam? I personally think (almost) everything related to BSD are appropriate on a BSD list. > On Mon, 9 Dec 2002, Jordan Hubbard wrote: > > >>Oh, now that was really really intelligent. At one point I determined that four countries with lax regulations were responsible for somewhere near 70% of my SPAM[1]. (The number may have been higher; I don't remember.) Since I don't know anyone in those countries, I ended up doing pretty much the same thing, but based on Received: headers rather than originating host. Actually, I find it too draconian to reject such mail using a fallable heuristic, so I file it into a bit bucket that I empty with great zeal about once a month. It would suck to live in one of those countries and get blacklisted as a result of the irresponsibility of others, so at least I can guarantee that I'll get the mail eventually and remove the blacklist entry if I ever get a false positive. (I've seen none so far.) I was going to switch to SpamAssassin, but recently one of the mail servers I have an account on started running SpamAssassin and adding huge X-Spam-Report: headers to incoming mail. Up until then, I was given to believe that the software was better at avoiding false positives. When one of those ``your order has shipped'' messages got a score of 4.70 for annoying HTML crap, it made me a bit nervous. Moreover, it seems like the only SPAM it can reliably detect is the kind that takes me a sixteenth of a second to delete. [1] The US was actually the third-worst offender, IIRC, but I couldn't blacklist it and still expect to accept all legitimate mail. ;-) To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-chat" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-chat Tue Dec 10 7:31:43 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-chat@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4EECC37B401 for ; Tue, 10 Dec 2002 07:31:42 -0800 (PST) Received: from seed.net.tw (sn16.seed.net.tw [139.175.54.16]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 749E443ED8 for ; Tue, 10 Dec 2002 07:31:36 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from leafy@leafy.idv.tw) Received: from [211.74.130.205] (port=49366 helo=leafy.idv.tw) by seed.net.tw with esmtp (Seednet 4.10:4) id 18LmMB-000Kcz-00 for FreeBSD-chat@FreeBSD.ORG; Tue, 10 Dec 2002 23:31:35 +0800 Received: from leafy.idv.tw (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by leafy.idv.tw (8.12.6/8.12.6) with ESMTP id gBAFVY9I001174 for ; Tue, 10 Dec 2002 23:31:34 +0800 (CST) (envelope-from leafy@leafy.idv.tw) Received: (from leafy@localhost) by leafy.idv.tw (8.12.6/8.12.6/Submit) id gBAFVYOR001173 for FreeBSD-chat@FreeBSD.ORG; Tue, 10 Dec 2002 23:31:34 +0800 (CST) Date: Tue, 10 Dec 2002 23:31:34 +0800 From: leafy To: FreeBSD Chat Subject: Re: Spam decisions Message-ID: <20021210153134.GA1098@leafy.idv.tw> Mail-Followup-To: FreeBSD Chat References: <20021210073508.GB73284@raggedclown.net> <20021210152423.GA8031@HAL9000.homeunix.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=big5 Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20021210152423.GA8031@HAL9000.homeunix.com> User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.1i Sender: owner-freebsd-chat@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Tue, Dec 10, 2002 at 07:24:23AM -0800, David Schultz wrote: > made me a bit nervous. Here comes a guy from the .tw region :) Anyway I was using SpamAssassin myself untill I found that it's regarding titles with all 8-bit characters spam (with weight 3.5 IIRC). I host a mailing list for my friends, so it is very undesirable to see that our chats became *SPAM* :( And majordomo doesn't have a home dir (or am I missing something here?) so I had to let SpamAss go. Though feeling unfair to be labeled, there is really nothing I can do to alter such bad impression. In fact several people on the BSD list seem to use ISP's that spammers love, they do not know their names, but they live on my whitelist, even if the rest of the .whatever is kicked. I hate doing this, it is really against my principles, but some robot spam program is just getting too irritating. So after many months I just resorted to brute force. If so many people didn't use free-mail like hotmail, lycos, yahoo etc. I would reject all the mail emanating from those sources. Unforturtunately many "legit" people do use them. Yahoo is particularly evil in this respect (and they run FreeBSD I believe .. hey !). Which brings me to an interesting question about privacy. I actually signed up to Hotmail long ago, but never once used it. I just thought it might come in handy someday. One day I came across a piece of paper while tidying up, and on it I had scrawled my hotmail details some years before. I logged into it and it was completely full and every single message was spam...despite the fact I had never sent a message through it and never told anyone to send me messages through it. I whitelist mailing list mail and off-list responses thereto, when I can identify it. The idea that ``I don't know anyone in country X, so mail from there must be SPAM'' breaks down for mailing lists. I actually think that in general, if a whitelist is required at all, there must be something wrong with the model. That is probably the case, in fact, but the scheme seems to work well in practice. That doesn't mean that people use SpamAssassin are wrong, but they probably have different goals. My criteria are (a) be conservative (no false positives), and (b) try to minimize the time spent dealing with SPAM and related gizmos given the first constraint. Indeed, that is exactly what many of them do now -- just send spam to every possible address, and know that some small percentage will accidentally hit a real account. You can help them quickly identify valid e-mail accounts if your mail server does interactive validation of recipient addresses. Doesn't take very long to quickly spin through hundreds of addresses per minute (or second) and find out who all the various valid e-mail addresses are at your site. They can then make money by selling that list to other spammers. -- Brad Knowles, "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." -Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania. What is a genuine FreeBSD user ? A lot of the mail comes from potential users, or from people sending mail using Outlook Express. You cannot eliminate them on that ! > I whitelist mailing list mail and off-list responses thereto, when > I can identify it. The idea that ``I don't know anyone in country > X, so mail from there must be SPAM'' breaks down for mailing > lists. Yes, which is one of the reasons why I was so reluctant to do it. I actually think that in general, if a whitelist is > required at all, there must be something wrong with the model. > That is probably the case, in fact, but the scheme seems to work > well in practice. My criteria > are (a) be conservative (no false positives), and (b) try to > minimize the time spent dealing with SPAM and related gizmos given > the first constraint. > Yes, I agree with that. False positives do occur. At least one incarnation of spamassasin seemed to give high marks to any bracketed text in the Subject line (regexp fault I suspect)...regarding it as a unique ID number. I have adjusted some of my scoring..which is a nice facility (I am not easily offended by people swearing :). I seem to remember it also scored points for verp-munged mailing list headers, which is a bit unfortunate since several technical mailing lists I have been on use them, although since these are usually subscriber-only they don't usually garner enough points to reach the threshold. I have written a script that extracts addresses/Subject out of my Spam folder, I quickly eyeball it and delete the genuine ones from the list. The output file is something that can be slotted straight into my mail server's postfix header_checks file. This saves a lot of time. -- Regards Cliff Sarginson The Netherlands [ This mail has been checked as virus-free ] To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-chat" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-chat Wed Dec 11 14: 5:10 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-chat@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F10DE37B401 for ; Wed, 11 Dec 2002 14:05:09 -0800 (PST) Received: from flood.ping.uio.no (flood.ping.uio.no [129.240.78.31]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 139FC43EC2 for ; Wed, 11 Dec 2002 14:05:09 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from des@ofug.org) Received: by flood.ping.uio.no (Postfix, from userid 2602) id 771805374; Wed, 11 Dec 2002 23:05:05 +0100 (CET) X-URL: http://www.ofug.org/~des/ X-Disclaimer: The views expressed in this message do not necessarily coincide with those of any organisation or company with which I am or have been affiliated. I actually think that in general, if a whitelist is > required at all, there must be something wrong with the model. The problem is "recevier filter" rather than "receiver proxy filter". When the mail is accepted into your POP3 maildrop on your behalf by your ISP's SMTP server, rather than giving an SMTP 5xx error code on the address, it validates the email addresses for you. The only way to really deal with this is to change the "DATA"/"RCPT" processing order in the SMTP protocol itself, and institute server side filters. What it really boils down to is that you need to have a means of rejecting at transfer time for delayed delivery, messages for which an address does not exist, based on both envelope and content of the message. You can't really do this, if you OK the address as existing without having the content in hand. The down side is that the misaddressed mail transfer burden will go up; but largely, that's a "sender pays the time" issue, since mail servers themselves tend to be well connected, relative to mail originators/clients. The remaining problem of a "sieve"-like filter on the receiving SMTP server is one of compute overhead: server side filtering increases server overhead. Basically, that means, minimally, a shared classification engine. So... time to jin the SMTP mailing group of the IETF, and fix the protocol, after which the other stuff becomes less important. -- Terry To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-chat" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-chat Fri Dec 13 8:26:33 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-chat@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8968B37B401 for ; Fri, 13 Dec 2002 08:26:32 -0800 (PST) Received: from puffin.mail.pas.earthlink.net (puffin.mail.pas.earthlink.net [207.217.120.139]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3818F43EC2 for ; Fri, 13 Dec 2002 08:26:32 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from tlambert2@mindspring.com) Received: from rev208-187-98-122.wolsi.com ([208.187.98.122] helo=mindspring.com) by puffin.mail.pas.earthlink.net with asmtp (SSLv3:RC4-MD5:128) (Exim 3.33 #1) id 18Msdx-0000bD-00; Fri, 13 Dec 2002 08:26:30 -0800 Message-ID: <3DFA09DD.5F0D586E@mindspring.com> Date: Fri, 13 Dec 2002 08:25:01 -0800 From: Terry Lambert X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.79 [en] (Win98; U) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Trish Lynch , chat@freebsd.org, Jordan Hubbard Subject: Re: MDFUG Pre-Christmas "Happy Hour" Friday, Dec 13th. Bring hundreds of families to your business with Operation KidSafe What: Over 3,000 children are reported missing each day, in the U.S. Most are found within minutes or hours and have happy endings. Police officials say that time is critical in the recovery of missing children. One major problem that costs precious time is the gathering of current photographs, fingerprints and statistical information to assist law enforcement agencies. The fingerprinting of the new millennium: Operation KidSafe will take a child's picture using a Digital Video Capture Device that interacts with our custom software. The software then captures the child's fingerprints, using digital ink-less finger-print capture device, and includes them as part of the child's file. The parent is provided with an 8 1/2 x 11-inch printout, containing the photograph and fingerprints. The parent can use the copy they receive to turn over to law enforcement anywhere in the world to instantly aid in an investigation. There is no databasing- the only record of the visit goes home with the parent. While most children are quickly reunited, there is always the fear of the worst and that is what we must prepare for. Parents will go to any reasonable length to protect their children, and that is what Operation KidSafe is all about! Program Outline and Benefits * We have 5 of these machines dedicated to only fingerprinting children. * They are booking fast...reserve yours now. * Local press enjoys covering this story and helping get the word out about this world class equipment. * We handle the press releases and media follow-up * The program fee is as low as $1.00 per child. * Operation KidSafe Staff Person attends each event. * Program includes one day of unlimited digital fingerprinting. * No kits to buy and no limit on how many can attend. * All supplies and equipment are included as a part of the program. With emphasis on "or care about". For good or ill, the NEED to do such a task is evaporating, in the world of most Windows users and elsewhere. Most stuff is being put in HTML or XML or PDF or even DOC and other complex, poorly-documented, formats. And much is being put into databases, SQL-accessible and not. It all makes the easy manipulation of data impossible and makes non-easy manipulation expensive, but it has it's benefits and its increasing use is rendering the tools of plain- text hackers increasingly arcane. The trend will probably get "worse": with almost all data being accessed programatically from databases of one form or another, dynamic web pages being an early example. The very concept of files is absent from some visions of the future. I suspect that much data would be better off in plain-text files, and very much effort (ie, money) wasted by a general move to non-text forms of data storage, but because of the real benefits such moves make in many importance cases, the trend will be unavoidable. I'd like professional-looking silkscreen or labels. I suppose one advantage to burning CDs and adding labels would be that it might be possible to add a warning about the BIND bug... or to create CDs that were 4.7-p1 so that users would not get hit by that bug. --Brett To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-chat" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-chat Sat Dec 14 15:29:14 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-chat@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 478A437B401 for ; Sat, 14 Dec 2002 15:29:13 -0800 (PST) Received: from oracle.uk.clara.net (oracle.uk.clara.net [195.8.69.94]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8741C43EC2 for ; Sat, 14 Dec 2002 15:29:12 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from george@alink.co.za) Received: from adsl.uk.alink.co.za ([217.158.80.249] helo=D9NLZD0J) by oracle.uk.clara.net with smtp (Exim 3.36 #3) id 18NLiZ-000BpG-00 for chat@FreeBSD.ORG; Sat, 14 Dec 2002 23:29:11 +0000 Message-ID: <004a01c2a3c8$95f3e150$0100000a@D9NLZD0J> From: "George Barnett" To: Subject: Re: aaaarrrrggghhh - I can't remember and it's killling me.. If you're able to query this data from a nice XML template then you'll probably same time and money. The key is picking the right tool for the job.
