The nice and renice commands of have changed. The confusion has gone with that. However another confusion has appeared. The default root uses either the shell csh or tsch. This has its own nice command, which works in the old way. So one would get a different response under these shell than one would expect. I found a work around by adding a alias to the ~/.cshrc file. (alias nice /usr/bin/nice). Would it be an good idea to add this to the default /root/.cshrc file? -- Best regards, Alex To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Mon Dec 23 11: 0:43 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5B1A737B401 for ; Mon, 23 Dec 2002 11:00:37 -0800 (PST) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C7DB143EE8 for ; Mon, 23 Dec 2002 11:00:33 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (peter@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.6/8.12.6) with ESMTP id gBNJ0XNS086150 for ; Mon, 23 Dec 2002 11:00:33 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: (from peter@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.6/8.12.6/Submit) id gBNJ0XXi086144 for freebsd-doc@freebsd.org; Mon, 23 Dec 2002 11:00:33 -0800 (PST) Date: Mon, 23 Dec 2002 11:00:33 -0800 (PST) Message-Id: <200212231900.gBNJ0XXi086144@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: peter set sender to owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: FreeBSD doc list Subject: Current unassigned doc problem reports Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Current FreeBSD problem reports The following is a listing of current problems submitted by FreeBSD users. These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. This new one follows the chronological order of events to the letter. "First, send mail to &a.portmgr; with the repo copy request listing the reasons for it. Next, if &a.portmgr; approves it, &a.cvs; will do a repository copy from the old location/name to the new location/name. You will then receive a notice, at which point you are expected to perform the following:" A couple of observations: 1) the 1st 'repo copy' element is used as an abbreviation since we call this a 'repo copy' request. It's part of the FreeBSD committers lexicon as it is. :) 2) the 2nd 'repository copy' element is not used as an abbreviation since cvs will perform a repository copy. That's the real deal. :) 3) 'location/name' is being used for historical reasons. Sometimes, a port is moved around the ports tree to a new location (new category); sometimes, it is just renamed (copied to a new name in the same category). It is a bit big but informational. Any changes on this last version? Regards, -- Mario S F Ferreira - DF - Brazil - "I guess this is a signature." If &a.portmgr; approves the request, &a.cvs; will repository copy the port to the new location and name. When you receive email notification of the repo copy, you are expected to perform these steps:" Notes: Rewritten to avoid the use of "it", which readers often find confusing. Changed "Send mail" to "Email". Added quotes to the first "repo copy", since it's a term. might be more appropriate, dunno. Added emphasis around "repository copy". Eliminated redundant old/new location. Rewrote last two sentences, although I think they could be better yet. Changed "perform the following" to "perform these steps". It seems better not to refer to a procedure by its location. -Warren Block * Rapid City, South Dakota USA To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Wed Dec 25 8:12:32 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7984A37B401 for ; Wed, 25 Dec 2002 08:12:30 -0800 (PST) Received: from msn.com (cache250.mm.pl [217.172.224.250]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id CFE9043EE5 for ; Wed, 25 Dec 2002 08:12:10 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from andyttt@msn.com) Received: from [109.200.124.188] by smtp013.mail.yahou.com with NNFMP; Wed, 25 Dec 2002 16:11:56 -0000 Reply-To: Message-ID: <022b31d15a0d$8663b7d3$4cc41db3@fraxif> From: To: Subject: Eat pizza, watch TV ... and lose 22 pounds Date: Wed, 25 Dec 2002 08:43:06 +0700 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Priority: 1 (High) X-MSMail-Priority: High X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.50.4522.1200 Importance: Normal Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hello ! If you're like me, you've tried EVERYTHING to lose weight. I know how you feel - the special diets, miracle pills, and fancy exercise equipment never helped me lose a pound either. It seemed like the harder I tried, the bigger I got, until I heard about a product called Power Diet Plus. You're probably thinking to yourself, "Oh geez, not another miracle diet pill!" Like you, I was skeptical at first, but my sister swore it helped her lose 23 pounds in just two weeks, so I told her I'd give it a shot. I mean, there was nothing to lose except a lot of weight! Let me tell you, it was the best decision I've ever made. Period. Six months later, as I'm writing this message to you, I've gone from 355 pounds to 210 pounds, and I haven't changed my exercise routine or diet at all. Yes, I still eat pizza, and lots of it! I was so happy with the results that I contacted the manufacturer and got permission to resell it - at a BIG discount. I want to help other people lose weight like I did, because it does so much for your self-esteem, not to mention your health. I give you my personal pledge that Power Diet Plus absolutely WILL WORK FOR YOU. If it doesn't, you can return it any time for a full refund. If you are frustrated with trying other products, not having any success, and just not getting the results you were promised, then I recommend the only product that worked for me - POWER DIET PLUS. You're probably asking yourself, "Ok, so how does this stuff actually work?" Power Diet Plus contains Lipotropic fat burners which are scientifically proven to increase metabolism and cause rapid weight loss. No "hocus pocus" in these pills - just RESULTS, RESULTS, RESULTS!! Here is the bottom line ... I can help you lose 10-15 pounds per week naturally, without exercising and without having to eat rice cakes all day. Just try it for one month - there's nothing to lose, and everything to gain. You will lose weight fast - GUARANTEED. That is my pledge to you. Yes, I've seen this too, but only with the original web page. When I download it and put it and the images in a file, it works fine. It seems to be OK with just about any other browser. I've taken a look at the source, and note tags I've never seen before, such as div. According to my dated HTML book, only Netscape supports this tag--possibly differently? I note that Emacs thinks that the source is SGML, and http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.freebsd.org%2Fdoc%2Fen_US.ISO8859-1%2Fbooks%2Fhandbook%2Fvinum-examples.html can't work out what kind of document it is, so it's probably worth somebody with more SGML-foo than me to put some effort into making the pages standards-compliant. I note that Emacs thinks that the > source is SGML ... Last time I checked, DIV tags work best on IE, and Opera; although Netscape 6 supports them well, i.e. the page in question works well on Netscape 6+. Netscape 4.9 is from the time when DIV tags were only used extensively on "IE only" sites; but now its part of the HTML standard. The page in question is: > can't work out what kind of document it is, so it's probably worth > somebody with more SGML-foo than me to put some effort into making > the pages standards-compliant. I am surprised why the validator doesn't pick this up. If you explicitily select `HTML 4.01 Transistional' from the option box (http://validator.w3.org/), then it shows 12 errors, all to do with URLs of type: "http://www.FreeBSD.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=vinum&sektion=8" This can be solved by using single quotes e.g: , because the &sektion is thought of as an entity by the parser. Either that, or the validator is broken -- which is very unlikely. On that note, it makes me wonder why we use `sektion' and not 'section'? :-) One more thing, we should encode the document char-set type, so that the validator can work with our documents: Cheers. -- Hiten hiten@unixdaemons.com, hiten@uk.FreeBSD.org To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Thu Dec 26 8:59:59 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B195B37B401; Thu, 26 Dec 2002 08:59:58 -0800 (PST) Received: from pittgoth.com (14.zlnp1.xdsl.nauticom.net [209.195.149.111]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DDC7843EC5; Thu, 26 Dec 2002 08:59:57 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from trhodes@FreeBSD.org) Received: from moble.pittgoth.com (acs-24-154-229-196.zoominternet.net [24.154.229.196]) by pittgoth.com (8.12.6/8.12.6) with SMTP id gBQGxpNN005792; Thu, 26 Dec 2002 11:59:51 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from trhodes@FreeBSD.org) Date: Thu, 26 Dec 2002 12:00:17 -0500 From: Tom Rhodes To: Hiten Pandya Cc: grog@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: Bad vinum html page Message-Id: <20021226120017.58f27d73.trhodes@FreeBSD.org> In-Reply-To: <3E0B2FF5.30505@unixdaemons.com> References: <3E0B2FF5.30505@unixdaemons.com> X-Mailer: Sylpheed version 0.8.6claws (GTK+ 1.2.10; i386-portbld-freebsd4.7) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Thu, 26 Dec 2002 16:36:05 +0000 Hiten Pandya wrote: > > I am surprised why the validator doesn't pick this up. It's not something the "standards people" can handwave away, since '&' starts an entity reference in SGML, and you can't undo THAT without undoing SGML (and XML, for that matter). -- Matthew Fuller (MF4839) | fullermd@over-yonder.net Systems/Network Administrator | http://www.over-yonder.net/~fullermd/ "The only reason I'm burning my candle at both ends, is because I haven't figured out how to light the middle yet" To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Fri Dec 27 9: 2:46 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C7ABE37B426; Fri, 27 Dec 2002 09:02:42 -0800 (PST) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 68D8243EB2; Fri, 27 Dec 2002 09:02:42 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from trhodes@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (trhodes@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.6/8.12.6) with ESMTP id gBRH2gNS069936; Fri, 27 Dec 2002 09:02:42 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from trhodes@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from trhodes@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.6/8.12.6/Submit) id gBRH2ghs069932; Fri, 27 Dec 2002 09:02:42 -0800 (PST) Date: Fri, 27 Dec 2002 09:02:42 -0800 (PST) From: Tom Rhodes Message-Id: <200212271702.gBRH2ghs069932@freefall.freebsd.org> To: trhodes@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org, trhodes@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: docs/37557: there is no ciss(4) RAID controller man page Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Synopsis: there is no ciss(4) RAID controller man page Responsible-Changed-From-To: freebsd-doc->trhodes Responsible-Changed-By: trhodes Responsible-Changed-When: Fri Dec 27 09:02:07 PST 2002 Responsible-Changed-Why: I'm currently doing manual pages for the kernel. I'm removing a link to http://www.freebsdzine.org/200103/ which I've noted has an article (or two) on Rich Morin's very interesting "Meta" project (which should interest -doc people). AFAIK, the project hasn't advanced much, so the article is still accurate. I couldn't find "Meta" with your http://www.freebsddiary.org/ search tool. I did a quick look for the article with google and at Meta's http://cantaforda.com/Meta/ and in the freebsddiary index of old articles with no luck. Do you (or could you) have some freebsdzine archives somewhere? I expect he has them in a repo somewhere. I'm willing to host them at freebsddiary.org/freebsdzine/ if needed. IMHO, not having them online is a loss. The final draft has come to this. Pretty much half the paragraph comes from Warren Block's suggestions with a few changes by me and Gary W. Swearingen. "Send mail to &a.portmgr;, listing the reasons for the repository copy request. If &a.portmgr approves it, &a.cvs; will do a repository copy from the old to the new location and/or name." This 1st part is ready and clean cut. "send mail" is preferred over either e-mail or mail since we've already used in other places. I personally prefer it over e-mail cause it is one less case of computer language verbalization (which I use a lot but this is a formal documentation). :) But that's just me. heheh Also, I prefer "from the old to the new location and/or name" because it is not limitted to term port, it can also be about other parts of the ports repository. Furthermore, it can be to another name (renamed), to another location (new category) or both. And, I used a 'it' to avoid repeating terms since we're already repeating "repository copy" twice. The 2nd part is the problematic one. :) That's what I have so far. "You will receive a notification when everything is done. Then, you're expected to perform the following steps:" I like perform because it is the committer's duty to perform those steps. And I prefer 'following' but I could use 'these'. Not a problem. Moreover, I prefer to leave email out, just mentioning a notification. What do you guys think? The 1st part is good. Perhaps we could change the 2nd part. I'll commit it as it is if I hear nothing from anyone. :) Thanks a lot. This is way better than the 1st draft I proposed. Regards, -- Mario S F Ferreira - DF - Brazil - "I guess this is a signature."
